On behalf of ARQUITECTUM we welcome you and wish all the participating architects the very best of luck. ARQUITECTUM International Architecture Competitions INTRODUCTION ARQUITECTUM is the first international institution devoted to the organizing of open architecture competitions that enable professionals throughout the world to contribute and promote their work in the world s architectural circles (institutions, publishers, government bodies). In this way we have been involved in a number of avant-garde projects in cities all over the world, such as the Tower for the Summer Rio Olympics, the Museum of Memory in Miami, or the extension to the Moulin Rouge in Paris.
THE CHALLENGE Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and the largest city in the region of Bohemia. It has a privileged location in the center of Europe and is well connected with neighboring countries, making it one of the most popular destinations on the continent. But like any growing city is lacking housing units and this situation is still of great concern to planners and the City Council of Prague. It is for this situation that this time ARQUITECTUM has been convened by the City Council of Prague for the International Competition "PRAGUE: BRIDGE-BUILDING ON THE VLTAVA RIVER" which aims to provide an answer to the housing problem in a creative way and using a theme present throughout the city: it s beautiful bridges this time with the intention of connecting the Smichov and Podolí districts and use these structures as housing or supports which called BRIDGE-BUILDING. OBJECTIVES OF THE COMPETITION The objectives of the PRAGUE: BRIDGE-BUILDING ACROSS VLTAVA RIVER Competition are as follows: Promote the work of any architect on a global level in order to facilitate, eventually, their access to the restricted and difficult European architectural design market. Gather together architectural ideas from around the world to enable the selection of the best project to be developed at the riverside of Vltava River in Prague. Gather the best ideas involving urban development which are capable, at the same time, of adapting to and reflecting Czech culture. Generate discussion of ideas regarding the intervention of bridges on contemporary urban contexts. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ARQUITECTUM is grateful for the generous collaboration of the Czech Chamber of Prague ( and its support for this competition. Also we must be grateful with the Institute of Architecture of Prague: ARCHIP, the only one school of architecture in English language on Central Europe. We would also like to thank the renowned members who form the competition jury: without their valuable support it would not have been possible to organize this competition. THE PROJECT: BRIDGE-BUILDING This project is to design five (variable number according to your designed) towers housing the new bridge become an item "alive" that allows the users to use the top as an urban "public" space at the same time as a "private", and
that supports the typical mute concrete, brick or steel something "dead" to something "energized" for its nightlife and/or diverse. Thus the Municipal Government trying to install a new type of housing: housing over the river (economic, social) but it is no less beautiful in views, spaces or enjoy the city. DESIGN AND USES BRIDGE - BUILDING LIVING UNIT: Departments should have the following environments and measure up to 100 m2 01 Dining Room 01 Kitchen 01 master bedroom / bathroom / closet 01 Bedroom Secondary 01 Bath Visit (to serve for the second bedroom) 01 Laundry PARKING: Must be calculated two (2) parking spaces for each Living Unit URBAN SPACE: Consideration should be a pedestrian corridor, cycling and vehicular SUMMARY: LIVING UNIT: Dining Room: Kitchen: Master Bedroom/Bath/Closet: Secondary Bedroom: Guest bathroom: Laundry: 25 square meters 15 square meters 20 square meters 12 meters square 3.5 square meters 4.5 square meters APPROXIMATE PARTIAL AREA: 80 square meters NOTE: Will tolerate up to 10% of constructed area. BASIC ORGANIZATION: To access the Departments necessarily have to climb across the area of two levels of parking. To get to the Hall of distribution. The service ladder should project the last service department to lower the uppermost surface, in this case planned the Urban Space. DESIGN PARAMETERS: Location: The "BRIDGE-BUILDING" will be located within the perimeter defined in the "Site Plan" located inside the ZIP file Free Contest (found in the "Downloads" section). Start and finish point: The start and finish of the building "BRIDGE-BUILDING" is a decision that takes each contestant as Architectural be his party. Section Road: The contestant has 15 to 25 meters to define the width of the road section via considering vehicular, pedestrian and cycling corridor and an avenue of trees to the center. NOTE: The distribution, location and width of these will be as determined by each architect and following a basic rule universal.
Levels and height: The project should be considered as minimum height of 3 meters between floor and ceiling. Also as a maximum height of 25 meters as volume. Views: The living room should be overlooking the Vltava River. The rooms, depending on each proposal, will determine if your main view is given to the Vltava River or building interior. Also on visual common spaces for users should be determined by the contestant. Mandatory vertical: circulation have two (2) elevators for "Tower" or apartment block which will come from the parking lot and come to each unit level. Similarly there will be a fire escape. Also need to consider access from the island "Emperor's Meadow" to the urban space designed for the building "BRIDGE-BUILDING." Program: The organization depends on each proposal as long as you keep the "Basic Chart" above. Natural and Artificial Light: The rooms, living and dining rooms should have natural light-direct while other environments may dispense with it and have artificial light. SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Volume: The volume must relate harmoniously with the context in which it is located, taking into account the surrounding buildings, yet still unique and original. The volume should be 25 feet high at most and serve as landmark for the area where it is located. Materials: There is no restriction on the use of materials and can be used on marble (coated), metal (in plates), wood (as applicable), steel (structures or coatings), or aluminum (in sheets sunbreakers or exterior of any gender) exposed concrete or stucco (as exterior finish) provided they are justified in the proposal and have accommodated within the overall image of the building.
Vegetation: vegetation can be defined anywhere in the building. Security: should be considered a safe structure, and functional enough to withstand the extreme changes in climate and natural phenomena. Picture: The BRIDGE-BUILDING shall have a contemporary, current and cutting edge so that they can be recognized as a bridge "cosmopolitan", able to live anywhere in the "Global Village". Visuals: East side of Moldava River (Podoli): One access to the bridge will be from Podoli s waterfront which is one of the most important leisure and transport corridors in Prague. It will be at the foot of the historical fortress of Vysehrad, which comprises peaceful and large green areas. It will also cross over the port of Podoli, a green peninsule for minor boats. On the Moldava River (Cisarska Louka): the bridge will cross an artificial island with vast green areas, the island of Cisarska Louka. On this calm territory there are many sport activities, camping zones and also large coasts for sailing ports. West side of Moldava River (Smichov): The other access to the bridge will be from Smichov s port. It is a quiet area surrounded by green waterfront in the north and a concrete platform for boats in the south. This territory offers poor aesthetical characteristics and lacks of an aproppiate architectural intervention. The zone is next to the Smichov Railway Station and Strakonicka Expressway, two important transport infrastructure of the City. Materials: There are no materials restrictions, allowing for the use of steel, concrete, wood, (as structure) exposed concrete, galvanized steel (as an exterior finishing), among other cases, provided their use is justified within the proposal and they have a place within the integral image of the building. Social area: social areas should be included in every access of the bridge, since they are located in important public spaces which offer optimal physical and urban conditions for their development. Cleanliness, comfort and maintenance: The bridge should be easy to clean and maintain, especially as concerns important structure areas, which should be readily accessible from some specific part of the bridge, whether by pivots, slides or any other substructure created to this effect (especially as refers to parapets, the outer face of which should be easy to clean). EXCEPTIONS ARQUITECTUM believes that competitions involving ideas present an excellent opportunity for architectural experimentation, discussion and speculation. In this sense, our parameters are always very open, flexible and, to a certain degree, referential, given that we are interested in motivating architects to express their point of view, and very often such a vision may involve actual subversion of the rules defined by the competition. In other words, each architect is free to explore to such a point that they may choose to get around or break- the rules themselves, although of course they may risk disqualification for such an attempt. THE SITE The land is located across the river Vltava between Smichov and Podoli neighborhoods across the Prairie Island Emperor. Being a bridge and contemporary character intended to deliver, must be found to meet the residential purpose thereof, may yet be done in a manner that respects the scale of the place or compete with surrounding landmark buildings. The plot has the following coordinates: East side of the river: From 50 3'43.988"N, 14 25'3.153"E to- 50 3'32.463"N, 14 25'9.881"E West side of the river: From 50 3'47.596"N, 14 24'40.173"E to- 50 3'33.026"N, 14 24'40.352"E (Exact location must be defined by contestants) Altitude: 200 meters above sea level.
