FRANCIS SENIOR SERVICE PROJECT HIGH SCHOOL DESCRIPTION When you first came to St. Francis, you joined other young men in the search for your own growth and development in an emerging Christian community. Together with your parents, we try to help you realize that ultimately it is you who must develop yourself into a responsible person in the real world. To help your personal growth and ongoing reflective process, the Senior Project has been instituted. Seniors will design, develop, execute, and evaluate a service project over the course of the academic year having shown a minimum of 20 hours of work, which includes both the planning, and execution of the service. Students may work individually or in small groups of no more than 4 students. Participation, completion and presentation of the senior project will be part of your Second Semester Religion Vocations grade. The Senior Project should reflect the Corporal Works of Mercy as set forth by the Catholic Church; these are kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their material and physical needs. Feed the hungry Shelter the homeless Clothe the naked Visit the sick and imprisoned Bury the dead Give alms to the poor All projects must be completed by April 31 st, Seniors who do not complete their service project may not take their final examinations. Students will present projects to their religions classes with a faculty panel from May 1-12, SOME FURTHER REQUIREMENTS, OBSERVATIONS, AND SPECIFIC PROHIBITIONS: The Senior project may benefit the St. Francis community or an off campus community. Students may not work for profit businesses and they may not receive any PAY, WAGES, OR SALARIES for services performed during the project. There will be no project approved that involves students' own parents or immediate relatives or firms run by the same. No project will be approved if a parent or relative works for the same company at the same site being considered. Ideally, seniors' projects should be at places different from other seniors' projects. Several seniors at one location may affect the project's goal to give an experience away from school-related work and relationships. Charity vs. Service: Students sometimes are inspired to collect items and/or funds for a specific cause/charity/organization. While fundraising and advocacy can be a component of the project, there must be an element of direct service through which the students have face-to-face interaction with the group being served. 1

3 THE PROCESS Step 1: Propose (Project Proposal form due by Sept. 30, 2016) Step 2: Plan Step 3: Implement Step 4: Reflect Step 5: Present (May 1-12, 2017) STEP 1: PROPOSAL 1. Research ideas for possible service projects. 2. Contact local service organization/agencies you are would like to serve. Plan a meeting with theme and identify their needs. Plans should include the following: goals, feasibility to see if it is possible to do the project with them. 3. Once you have identified needs, choose the dates that you would like to carry out your project. Fill out Project Proposal form (Form can be found on the SFHS campus ministry website and it is also available in the Franciscan Spirit and Life office). 4. Submit form before or on Sept. 30 th and await approval. Once it has been approved by the Christian Service Coordinator and you have been notified, you may begin to work on your project. Recommended: Choose a faculty mentor. If you would like help finding a mentor, speak with your religion teacher and/or the Christian Service Coordinator. Ideally, you would meet with your mentor at least 3 times throughout your project. STEP 2: PLANNING 1. Be in contact with your service organization/agency and finalize the dates that you will like to carry out your project. Senior Projects Not Approved Working on your own Eagle Scout Project. Collect clothes/shoes and drop them off at local charity. However, it would be approved if you: Work in a shelter, determine specific need, advertise and organize supply drive, deliver supplies directly to those in the shelter. Participate in a charity walk. However, it would be approved if you: Organize a team, raise money, lead information sessions on issue, get involved in the planning of the walk, and participate in the walk as a team leader. Pre-Approved Senior Projects Coordinate, organize and conduct an activity/event benefitting the marginalized communities of the Disabled, Elderly, Underserved and Sick. - Senior Prom (Dinner & Dance for senior citizens) - Technology Workshop Day for underprivileged communities - Arts Appreciation night (performances, singing, poetry) at Union Station in Pasadena 2

4 Create a volunteer tutoring/coaching program in a community where one does not already exist. Volunteer on a weekly basis with a local homeless & human services agency and or already existing tutoring/coaching program (Reading Partners, Lake Ave., Aspires Pasadena) Become a volunteer and spend time with an elderly person at a convalescent home or hospital. Note: Any student who is considering doing a project that is in any way connected to the various hospitals, or nursing facilities in the area may need to seek approval from the Director of Volunteers of that agency. Recommended: Meet with your Faculty Mentor to go over details of project. STEP 3: IMPLEMENTATION 1. Carry out your Senior Service project. 2. Document your project with photos and or video. 3. Students will be asked to document specific hours worked. There should be clear evidence that each student completed a minimum of 20 hours of work, which includes both the planning, and execution of the service. STEP 4: REFLECTION The project will require a reflection paper from each individual group member. The written component of the Senior Service Project will be comprised of a minimum of a 4-page reflection paper (typed, double spaced, 12 point font) and respond to following questions: How has this experience enriched your understanding of serving others? How are you different because of your experience performing service at St. Francis High School? STEP 5: PRESENTATION Students will have minutes to present their service projects in their religions classes from May 1-12 th. Presentation slots will be arranged with your senior religion teacher. Individual Reflection Papers: The project will require a reflection paper from each individual group member. The written component of the Senior Service Project will be comprised of a minimum 4-page reflection paper (typed, double spaced, 12 point font). Project Video: Your imovie must be 7 minutes minimum and 10 minutes maximum in length. The video will include a brief description of the organization; why he chose the organization; footage of the service carried out and a reflection of the service. The video must include some of the work being carried out and may not be just a student s reflection. If a student wishes to interview a person, please see Mr. Ramirez for an interview consent form. 3

5 St. Francis Community Option Seniors who wish to give back to the SFHS community may do so through completing no less than 40 hours from only the following St. Francis community events. Students are still required to complete a reflection paper and video for their class presentations during May 1-12 th. Any events not on this list will not count without prior consent of Mr. Ramirez. All hours must be completed by April 31 st, Seniors who do not complete their service project may not take their final examinations. List of Pre-Approved SFHS Events: SFHS Fall Production - Nov. 3-6, 2016 Christmas Tree Sale - December 3, 2016 SFHS Open House, January 7, 2017 (11:00 AM 2:00 PM) POSH 2017 Saturday, March 11, 2017 SFHS Annual Yard Sale Saturday, March 18, 2017 Mother s Guild Spring Event SFHS Spring Production March and March 30, April 1-2 Sports Medicine Competition Event April 1, 2017 Grandparent Communion Breakfast Saturday, April 8, 2017 Mothers Guild Spring Brunch May 6, 2017 *Lead a retreat with St. Francis Campus Ministry Any hours performed to fulfill class requirements will not count toward your service project requirement. Any hours performed above and beyond the required class requirement will count towards the Senior Project commitment. Examples of these might include Kinesiology, Chorus, Drumline, Stage Crew, and Festival of the Arts. These 40 hours will be submitted online through the x2vol system. Please see campus ministry website for instructions on how to log hours. The following events/activities must be approved by Mr. Ramirez and appropriate faculty before September 30, 2017: High School Admission Nights (Mr. Monarrez) Any hours performed through Yearbook (Mrs. Marick) Any hours done on campus through Stage Crew (Mr. Eulalia) Tutoring at SFHS (must be on campus, supervised by faculty) (Mrs. Mohr) Managing a SFHS team sport (Mr. Ramirez) *Leading SFHS retreats must run through an application process (Mr. Kim) 4
