Keys to a successful fellowship application at Pacific Forum CSIS Pacific Forum CSIS offers four resident and three nonresident research fellowships and we are continually asked, how can I be a successful applicant? While the requirements for each fellowship differ and there is no standard or model applicant, the following tips will help you to present your best application to Pacific Forum. First, we look at the strength of your research proposal and your match of interests with Pacific Forum s. The best research proposals are well-written, well-developed, and concise. Fellows are expected to write and publish on a regular basis, and a well- written research proposal helps us to gauge your strength as a writer. Second, we are looking for people who are motivated selfstarters and work well both individually and in groups. Fellows are often expected to take a leadership role in Pacific cont. on Page 3

2 Director s Message Nicole Forrester In my never-ending quest to make the Young Leaders the preeminent Asia- Pacific security policy leadership development program, we ve been working hard on getting all the procedures bedded down. Now I m turning my attention to conference projects, and how we can better motivate Young Leaders to deliver the highest quality work product and give them a platform worthy of the effort. Conference Projects are an essential part of the Young Leader Program experience. Beyond building new and consolidating existing knowledge, developing policy-oriented writing capabilities, they also helps build leadership and team work skills. Finally, these projects are usually required by our funders to show them that Young Leaders are doing something substantive, besides networking in exotic locales around the world. In the past, some Issues & Insights haven t received due recognition because we weren t publicizing their launch effectively. On the other hand, the publications could have benefited from greater YL engagement during the drafting process to produce a timely work worth trumpeting. On several occasions over the last nine months, I ve given YLs complete carte blanche over content and mechanism for conference projects with mixed results. We are soon going to launch our Handa Geiger Project website which will house new content including issues briefs, videos and interactive modules. Feedback indicates that single author and expert co-author credits (such as PacNets) are high on the list to motivate Young Leaders to participate at their best. 3 Young China Watchers continues to grow, seeks new members Young Leaders Program to launch online network Now entering its third year, Young China Watchers (YCW) has become an established part of the fabric amongst the Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong policy-interested community. With a new website, com and plans to open a chapter in London, the organization continues to grow and is eager to attract new members. Founded in the belief that there was an empty space in which younger members of the China community could gather to hear high-level presentations by internationally renowned experts, the organization has developed into a community with an increasingly global reach and membership. Strategic partnerships have been established with organizations like Pacific Forum CSIS Young Leaders, and a Board of Advisors has been created that includes prominent experts from Australia, Britain, China and the United States. As time has passed, members of the original core in Beijing have moved further afield, giving the network an impressive reach that the founders expect will lay the foundations for future projects and interactions. The next few years holds great promise for YCW, and the organization is eager to grow further with new members welcomed at every chapter at any time. Ideas for projects, partnerships and speakers are also welcome. The Pacific Forum CSIS Young Leaders Program is developing a new initiative to increase accessibility between Young Leaders around the world by establishing a new Young Leaders Online Network. This database will provide each Young Leader with the opportunity to opt-in to the network and thus have access to basic contact and professional information from other Young Leaders. In planning the logistics of this initiative, we ask that all Young Leaders spend a few moments to fill out our short three-question online survey. 4 Young Leader Opportunities Foreign Policy Initiative Summer 2013 Internship Program The Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI) Internship Program seeks rising college seniors and graduate students of the highest caliber with interest in the fields of, but not limited to, international studies, defense, national security, democracy and human rights, political science, and foreign affairs. FPI interns are given substantial work in current events research, policy communication, and think tank operations. Interns are encouraged to attend stimulating discussions around the local D.C. area and to interact closely with FPI s in-house experts. Though the FPI internship program is unpaid, participants gain valuable skills, a broader understanding of the policy world, invaluable experience, and networking opportunities. The Summer 2013 Internship Program will run from June 3rd until August 9th. Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 29th. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted ASPAC Conference Call for Paper and Panel Proposals The annual conference of Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC) in 2013 will be held in the beautiful city of Monterey on California s Central Coast, hosted by the Monterey Institute of International Studies, a Graduate School of Middlebury College, on June 7-9, The conference organizing committee welcomes the participation of university/ college teachers and researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and independent scholars interested in any aspect of Asia, defined to include Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, and Southwest Asia. ASPAC encourages inter/ multidisciplinary discourse among Asia-focused scholars and students and invites those trained in Political Science, Economics, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Linguistics, Language Teaching, Law, Business Administration, Psychology, and other disciplines to participate in its annual conferences. This year s conference theme is Asia: Looking Back, Moving Forward. Asian societies have changed and continue to change in myriad ways, while memories of the past also continue to inform understandings about them. 5 Young Leader Opportunities Call for Applications Global Emerging Voices 2013 The Global Emerging Voices (GEV) program is a new initiative that the Torino World Affairs Institute (T.wai) established in 2011 to advance dialogue between Europe and the Asia Pacific on re-emerging China and global governance. Organized by T.wai, the Mercator Stiftung, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the Australian National University, GEV facilitates the gathering of leading young European and Asia Pacific scholars, policy analysts and professionals who are committed to the deepening of mutual understanding and the forging of forwardlooking ties between Europe and the Asia Pacific. GEV 2013 will convene in Berlin, Brussels, and Turin from June 16 to 29, It will include seminars, discussions, workshops, and simulation sessions, exposing participants to key China experts and policymakers in Europe. While the majority of GEV participants will come from the Asia Pacific where they work in academia, journalism, policymaking, and business circles, this call for applications is also open to young Europeans and Americans who have extensive experience in Chinese and international affairs. In addition to full engagement during GEV 2013 activities, each participant will be expected to write a cogently argued and well-evidenced, 3,500-word policy paper to contribute to the Europe-Asia Pacific conversation on the ongoing global shift and an opinion piece to be published on the Australian National University website and other platforms as appropriate. Applications for GEV 2013 are accepted until 5 PM (GMT), March 18, 2013, and early application is strongly encouraged. Applicants should include, in one PDF file, their current résumés or CV and a personal statement of no more than 500 words explaining why and how they will contribute to and benefit from participating in GEV Shortlisted applicants may be asked to produce a 1,000-word analysis of publishable quality on a relevant subject regarding China s re-emergence before the final selection is made. Successful applicants will be notified by by April 8, WSD-Handa Fellows Pacific Forum CSIS Pacific Forum CSIS accepts applications for WSD- Handa Fellows on a rolling basis, however we are currently actively seeking applicants for our Fall 2013 class of fellows. Through the generosity of the Worldwide Support for Development and Dr. Handa Haruhisha, the Pacific Forum CSIS has established the WSD-Handa Fellowship Program. This fellowship offers both resident and non-resident fellowships to increase East Asian, US and European participation in Pacific Forum programs. The WSD-Handa fellows should already have some knowledge of East Asian security and economic developments and should use this fellowship as an opportunity to take a more in-depth look into these issues and offer solutions for improvement. WSD-Handa fellows will be resident at the Pacific Forum office for three months to a year. Special consideration will be given to applicants from lesser developed Southeast Asian nations and to those in Europe who focus on East Asia security issues. He or she will spend half that time working on an independent research project, under the guidance of Pacific Forum senior staff, which will lead to its publication in the Pacific Forum Issues and Insights series. The other half of his/her obligations will be to assist with Pacific Forum research and programs. This fellowship is a full-time (35 hours per week) position and Fellows will live and work in Honolulu, Hawaii.
