2 What is FEHRL? Formed in 1989 as the organisation of European National Road Research Centres Currently consists of >30 member institutes typically state-owned, but all with a public service orientation employing over 5,000 staff Facilitates cooperative research projects for European Road Directorates, European Commission and other clients 2

4 FEHRL s objectives Through research collaboration, FEHRL s statutory objectives are to: Provide scientific input to EU and national government policy on highway engineering and road transport matters. Create and maintain an efficient and safe road network in Europe. Increase innovation in European road construction and road-using industries. Improve the energy efficiency of highway engineering and operations. Protect the environment and improve quality of life. 4

9 YEAR Young European Arena of Research YEAR is a competition for early stage researchers who are doing research in the area of all transport modes: road, rail, waterborne. The competition gives the researchers an opportunity to show-case their work to experts within the field, both on the internet, and for the finalists at the Transport Research Arena (TRA) Conference in Athens in April 2012 Previous YEAR competitions were held in - Ljubljana, at TRA Brussels, at TRA2010 More information at: 9

10 European Project Management Training What is European Project Management Training? Training within the framework of an FP6 project - CERTAIN Targeted at junior project managers and researchers Aim & Objectives To identify and educate new and aspiring leaders of collaborative European research projects To create an important opportunity for young researchers to meet each other and discuss their experiences Outcome More than 60 researchers trained so far Feedback from the various institutes very encouraging exchange of information between researchers and institutes have increased Training has continued even after the end of the CERTAIN project 10

11 Exchange of Young Researchers Secondment of Young Researchers to FEHRL Researchers from Poland, Hungary, Slovenia and the Czech Republic seconded to the FEHRL Office To work with project managers, research developers and with the European Commission TITaM Marie Curie Action To reinforce the research competance and research of a FEHRL member institute CDV Mobility of researchers - secondment of researchers from CDV to BASt and TRL - recruitment of external experts 5 experts recruited (3 from Slovakia, and one each from Serbia and Turkey) 11

12 TEAM - Training in European Asset Health Management A Marie Curie Initial Training Network under FP7 aims to train the next generation of high quality engineers specialising in infrastructure management. The TEAM dentified 14 PhD level research topics linked through three technical work packages addressing Pavement Service Life Optimisation, Enhancing Structural Capacity and Traffic Loading Impacts this will result in new tools that can be used to get the most out of the existing infrastructure. TEAM project aims to provide a structured PhD training programme that will give the researchers the high technical abilities needed for this work. Special attention is paid to the key Marie Curie theme of mobility: the researchers are all required to travel and cannot be of the same nationality of their host institution all of the identified research projects are collaborative and will involve the researchers spending 20% of their time with one of their TEAM partners This will strengthen collaboration between the partners 12

13 The way forward Involve young researchers in the discussion and decision making Make research more attractive Mobility and exchange between industry and academia More funds into research Improve employment conditions Tackle the problem of «internal» brain drain in Europe Open «borders» to non European young researchers Provide opportunities to gain experience abroad at an early stage Restructure system to encourage independence of young researchers Training and professional development is not limited to young researchers and training activities for all (mixed young and not-so young) is a priority for FEHRL 13

14 Conclusions For over 20 years FEHRL has been contributing to enhancing the vitality and recognition of Europe s road systems. Today, FEHRL is recognised worldwide as a key centre of expertise for road research FEHRL has set itself the challenge to develop a truly inspiring vision for how roads will be built and maintained in the 21 st century. The result is the Forever Open Road a revolutionary concept that will bring together the best of what we have today with the best of what is to come, and produce the fifth generation road. FEHRL recognises the important role young researchers will play in building the next generation of roads that is capable of meeting with society s future demands and expectations. 14
