Max Planck Society s representatives and national authorities will be present. Tecnopolis, looking at the future Technopolis is conceived as the largest mega exhibition in Latin America of Argentinean science, technology, industry and art. The exhibition features more than 100 stands that are organized in five continents: Water, Earth, Air, Fire and Imagination. Each of these sites take the visitors to different aspects and practices of the Argentinean past, present and future in Sciences. In order to make this historical review more educational, there is a timeline expressed in posters indicating the milestones of local achievements in the world of science. The National Directorate of International Relations of MINCyT, organized scientific talks and lectures open to the public in general with the participation of renowned national and foreign scientists. The activities are scheduled to last until 27 November. Argentina to enhance its participation in the CERN The Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, Dr. Lino Barañao, visited the facilities of CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) where the Large Hadron Collider is installed in Switzerland. It was agreed with the Director of the Center, Prof. Rolf Heuer, to enhance Argentina's participation in the experiment to reproduce the first instants of the universe. In particular, Barañao and Heuer talked about increasing the number of Argentinean research groups working at CERN and the role that our country might have in providing new hardware for the hadrons accelerator equipment. MINCyT has contributed with more than $ 1,500,000 since 2007 to finance projects and support the participation of Argentinean researchers in this initiative.
2 Page 2 FP7 Info Days in Argentina Info Day in Mendoza On August 25 and 26, the National University of Cuyo (UNCU) jointly organized with ABEST a Briefing Session about the possibilities of including the participation of third countries in the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Development of the European Union (FP7). The purpose of the meeting, attended by 40 representatives of R & D institutions, was to introduce the different tools and possibilities offered by the FP7 to the academic, research, SMEs sectors based in the region. ABEST representatives also met with members of the Advisory Council of the UNCU in representation the School of Engineering, Arts and Design, Agricultural Sciences, Economic Sciences and the Secretary of Institutional Development, Dr. Daniel Pizzi. Info Day in Buenos Aires The National Directorate of International Relations of MINCyT, through the Argentina - European Union Liaison Office (ABEST) conducted an Info Day on July 26 in Buenos Aires to present the working programs of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), which were recently published by the EU. The event aimed at presenting the main lines of research to be funded in that period. The opportunities for international cooperation aimed at promoting human resources development through scholarships, the development of joint R & D projects with the centers of excellence in the EU and the promotion the participation of technology-based SMEs were also presented. Info Day in FLACSO ABEST organized the Info Day about the opportunities for cooperation in Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union on Wednesday August 17, 2011 at the Headquarters FLACSO Argentina. 20 researchers from different areas participated and the panels were organized together with Mrs María Blanca Pesado Riccardi of the International Cooperation Unit of the house of such Institution SMEs Info Day in Cardales On occasion of the 2011 Entrepreneurial Meeting, organized by the Chamber of Software and Computer Services of Argentina (CESSI), the National Directorate of International Relations was responsible for the MINCyT panel on "Financing Options for R+D+ i " with the moderation of Dr. José María Louzao, NCP for SMEs and CEO of G & L Group, and the participation of ICT NCP, M r s. R o s a Wachenchauzer, Mrs Alejandra Davidz iu k o f ABEST and Mrs. María Cristina Alvarez, Coordinator or the Enterprises Section. Info Day in UCA On August 29, the Info Day took place at the Puerto Madero headquarters of the Argentinean Catholic University (UCA). During the event, the following subjects were presented: the main guidelines of FP7 opportunities for human resources training and mobility (People Programme and COST Program), the mechanisms of bilateral cooperation in Biomedicine and Agriculture, the achievements of "ARFITEC Program" and information on the support and development of biotechnologies in MERCOSUR. More than 30 people attended, and the Directorate of International Relations and Academic Cooperation, Ms. Soledad Zapiola (DRIC) and the Directorate of Research, Dr. Beatriz Balian (Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs) and Dr. Nicholas Gorboff (Institutional Focal Point ABEST - Net). Fifty-five researchers and representatives of SMEs participated in the Info Day held at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, which was coordinated jointly by the International Relations Unit of such House of Studies. Info Day in La Plata
3 News for mobility of researchers and companies Results COST Scholarships 2011 On Friday August 12, the calls launched by the National Directorate of International Relations through ABEST II project to apply for funding for COST GRANTS 2011 were launched with the aim of facilitating the participation of Argentinean researchers that participate in the COST actions force. The Evaluation Committee approved the proposals on the basis of their scientific, academic and professional background of the following researchers: Dr. Sandra Sharry, School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, National University of La Plata. Dr. Patricia Marini, Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Rosario (IBR - CONICET). Dr. Elena Rivera, School of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Buenos Aires. Dr. Maria Elena Alvarez, CIQUIBIC-CONICET, National University of Córdoba. The benefit granted include class ticket airfare, medical insurance and travel expenses as provided in the Reciprocal Agreement Argentina - COST, for a total amount of EUR 3,000. People Programme The People Programme provides support for the mobility of researchers and professionals, both within the European Union and at international level. It is implemented through a series of Marie Curie actions, by granting research fellowships, technical training and other measures that will help them develop their skills and competencies throughout their careers. EULARINET: bi-regional EU-LAC workshops In the framework of the Joint Initiative for Research and Innovation ALCUE, which working method and road map was defined during the Meeting of Senior Officials from Latin America, Caribbean and European Union (EU-LAC SOM) on March 28 and 29, 2011 in Brussels, bi-regional workshops are being implemented to structure the S&T dialogue in 4 areas: Bioeconomy including Food Security, Biodiversity including Climate Change, renewable energy and ICT to meet the challenges of Society. Following the recommendations of the SOM, the EULARINET project has aligned its working program to support the implementation of the Joint Initiative. Argentina has sent experts to all workshops and is leading with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of France and CIRAD France a Bioeconomy Thematic Workshop on 27 and September 28, 2011 in the City of Paris. The purpose of this meeting will be to formulate a set of pilot activities in the area to be implemented at the bi regional level. Call for Collaborative Research Network The Inter American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) reports on the opening of the call for Collaborative Research Networks (CRN3) to be implemented in two phases with the first closing scheduled for November 15, Based on this first phase, 25 groups will be chosen to complete the proposal before April Before sending your proposal to the IAI website, you must register for an account and password. The duration of CRN3 Program is of five years with an extension of one year for performance evaluations. The IAI intends to offer 10 to 12 scholarships. These scholarships are usually funded with a total of U.S. $ and exceptionally with up to $ 1 million. 4 Page 4 ABEST-NET SECTION INFO DAYS FOR SMES IN SALTA On September 29 the "Conference for the Promotion of Innovation in Enterprises. Financing Lines " took place at the Museum of Fine Arts of the City of Salta. The event was organized jointly by the Government of the Province of Salta and the UVT Foundation CAPACIT AR of NOA. ABEST participated actively in the meeting, by offering a panel on project funding opportunities for R+D+ i of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union. UNLP: ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE ABEST-NET It is a pleasure to present the staff of the Unit of University International Relations of the UNLP, who are institutional contact points to disseminate spread the FP7. In the right margin, there appears Mrs. Enriqueta Della Rosa, Head of the Unit and Dr. Edgardo Nosetto, Secretary of Institutional Relations. GRADUATE COURSE IN SOFTWARE QUALITY The University of Belgrano (UB) and the National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI) jointly coordinated the Graduate Course in Software Quality UB-INTI, which provided a strong background in software process and product quality, by incorporating concepts of project management and services. INFO DAY AT UNNE From July 6 to 8 the "Meeting of Communications Science and Technology 2011" was held organized by the General Secretariat of Science and Technology of the National Univeristy of Northeast (UNNE) in the city of Resistencia, Chaco. The meeting aimed at contributing to the training of young researchers, disseminate, share and interrelate the work of the various research groups and present funding opportunities for R & D groups in this institution. In this context, the Liaison Office Argentina- European Union (ABEST) of of the National Directorate of International Relations, gave a presentation of the activities undertaken and opportunities in Cooperation with the European Union in Science, Technology and Innovation to an audience of 300 participants. In addition, the Institutional Contact Point, Dr. Silvia Mazza, stressed the importance of maintaining a direct and constant communication as the case of ABEST-NET, thus enabling and ensuring that the opportunities for international cooperation are known to all researchers in the country, and providing an effective and overall advice to the different programs. In the afternoon, the "Workshop Seminar: Opportunities for International Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation with the European Union" was held for researchers, SMEs and institutional representatives from universities and research centers. In particular the following items were emphasized: financing schemes, partner finding tools, such as expert evaluator, opportunities for SMEs, the People Programme and the COST Programme. The interest of the participants was focused mainly on the possibilities offered by the People Programme and its variants, and on COST program as well, as an opportunity to generate potential partners through the Reciprocal Cooperation Agreement recently signed. Those interested in publishing activities or events are requested to contact abest@mincyt.gov.ar Latest actions in the framework of the EU-MINCYT NanoPymes Project It is worth highlighting that the European Union Delegation in Buenos Aires, has granted contract that will provide the Technical Assistance for the Project Nanopymes International. The recipient is ACE International Consultants of Spain, which Main Expert will be the Mr José Pedro Alberti Ale, an Uruguayan. In short, the International Technical Assistance for the Project will be operational, assisting the Project Management Unit. The project is at the stage of formal approval of the Program at the First Stage of the Program to start the planned activities. Besides, Ms. Monica Silenzi (Manager) made a presentation of the Project NanoMER- COSUR to the participants, organized by the Nanotechnology Foundation Argentina, which was held on September 13,14 and 15 at the Palais Rouge City of Buenos Aires. 5 Page 5 Report on "Orientations for EU ICT R&D and Innovation beyond 2013" has been Published The Information Society Technology Advisory Group (ISTAG) has published a report reaffirming the importance of pursuing and strengthening EU investment in ICT research and innovation. According to the document, ICT has become a key transformative force in social innovation processes enabling and facilitating socio-economic and human development. ICT infrastructure is also a critical resource in today's globalised economy whose reliable and dependable operation is absolutely essential. ISTAG also considers essential to develop a more comprehensive view of the whole value chain of ICT and ICT-enabled services, bridging the gap between precompetitive research, product development and service deployment. The document contains 10 key recommendations and it is open to comments and feed backs until the 30 September Download the document. ABEST technical mission in Brussels Staff members of the Liaison Office Argentina - European Union (ABEST) of the National Directorate of International Relations MINCyT will travel to Brussels from October 3 to 7 for a technical exchange with the offices of APRE, CIRAD and DST, including other institutions that participate with ABEST in cooperation activities. The objective of the technical mission will be to learn best practices and, in particular, to internalize the methodology and techniques used for the exchange of information and cooperation between national and European R+D+i, and to learn about the organizational structure of the offices IGLO and/or equivalent units.
