1. Introductions & Announcements Presentation to the PNAMP Steering Committee August 29, 2012 Presented by PNAMP Coordination Team: See list of upcoming meetings Agenda for today any additions? Next SC meeting: November in Portland Request Feedback: Conference participation AFS Oregon Chapter February 2013 (Bend) AFS Western Division, national 2013 NWRRA, ESA 2013 Others? Jennifer Bayer, Sarah Beldin, Amy Puls, Jacquelyn Schei, Kathryn Thomas 2. Administrative Update FY 2013 funding status NPCC s PERC BPA recommendations Seeking additional sources of funding PSNERP NCEAS, GBMF Work plan process Staff to update status, seek input from task participants: September - October Bring proposed work plan to SC: November Adjust per SC feedback: December Finalize by January 11, Integrated Status and Trends Monitoring (ISTM) Fish Still trying to complete Objective 2 report Revisiting plans for Objectives 3-5 Discussion about reuse of tools from Objectives 1 & 2 Working to get ODFW & WDFW methods into MonitoringMethods.org Fact Sheet - draft
4. ISTM Habitat ISTM Habitat Update Database Objectives 1&2 Report Core Team ISTM Habitat GROSS Grant FY 2012 Municipal Stormwater Grants of Regional or Statewide Significance (GROSS) $189k to LCFRB and City of Longview Combine ongoing efforts by municipal stormwater managers in Southwest Washington with those led by PNAMP to develop an integrated status and trends monitoring design for the Lower Columbia region. ISTM Habitat Timeline Hire Contractor Phase 1 Workshops Phase 2 Workshops Phase 3 Workshops 2012 September October November December January February March April May Objectives 1&2 Report: Priorities & Programs Phase 1 Report (Obj 3): Gap Analysis & Alternate Monitoring Scenarios Phase 2 Report (Obj 4): Trade-off Analysis June 2013 Phase 3 Report (Obj 5): Final Recommendations
ISTM Habitat Questions? 5. Habitat Data Sharing Pilot with GSRO, regional habitat data sharing opportunities and barriers Relationships among macroinvertebrates, habitat, and fish productivity Macroinvertebrate standardized taxonomic effort GSRO pilot Are water temperatures in the region higher than 19 degrees Celsius? Is pool sediment greater than 20% fines? Is the in-stream volume of wood meeting the amounts described in Fox and Bolton s reference conditions for woody debris in WA? Example of assessment: Sharing of temperature data Characteristic GSRO Initial Question Metric to Address Question Notes Data Format Considerations Temperature Are stream temperatures in the region higher than 19 Celsius? 7 Day Max Average (typically reported as a rolling average for 7 days calculated each day, per site) Continuous monitoring is required for 7 Day Max Average USFS recommends that the logger be recording at intervals of an hour, longer intervals may miss actual maximum temperatures. We have not checked the periodicity with all potential data contributors. ISTM recommends we use calendar year (2011) as temporal basis. Our understanding is that the potential data contributors are already calculating this metric, or could do so on behalf of GSRO. GSRO will likely have to take the 7 Day Max Average data provided and apply the threshold of 19 C to produce a count, per site, per year (2011) of days where that threshold is exceeded. Can Data Contributor Provide Data in this Format? CHaMP Yes Clark Co Yes SRFB NO AREMP Yes PIBO Yes WADOE NO (grab sample only)
Relationships among macroinvertebrates, habitat, and fish productivity Next Steps? Expand mutual understanding of the ecological and monitoring opportunities and issues linking MI, habitat, and fish productivity List datasets with appropriate MI-H-F data and develop strategy to analyze Assess results with respect to framework and interest in an informative MI-H-F indicator Standardized Taxonomic Effort 6. WEB RESOURCES MONITORING RESOURCES OVERVIEW
ONLINE RESOURCES Data Repositories Store primary and secondary data from project and programs; PNAMP focus is to provide list of available DRs. 7 METADATA BUILDER PROTOTYPE Broadsheet of prototype presented to DMLT Will present prototype to Metadata WG in September; host meeting to discuss in late September/early October If you know anyone that would be interested in attending this session and is not on the Metadata WG or DMLT list, please let us know FUNDING New proposed scenario for funding of web development tasks MonitoringResources.org BPA proposing to contract directly for new development o Cost savings on USGS overhead Project management would be similar to current situation o PNAMP work with partners and participants to develop tools, features, etc. o Next steps line out details in contracts Still open to other funds supporting development of tools QUESTIONS? 7. Identify and promote best practices Validate data sharing Promote consistent documentation Help reduce duplicate methods in MonitoringMethods.org
At last SC meeting, outlined process Identify Topic Kick-Off Discuss Need identified during visit with IDFG o Measuring fish length all species and life stages o Is a method needed? YES o Identify which type of length is being measured Find SMEs and key players Post Findings to MM.org Discussion Board Plan B (and C, and D) How hard can it be, right? o Look for standard method descriptions to use in protocols Search for Documented Methods SME Review Anticipated Results Offered topics o PIT tagging, electrofishing, large wood, substrate, pool characteristics Lots of length methods in MonitoringMethods.org Various descriptions- examples: o Adult fish captured in the Lower Granite Dam adult trap will be measured from the tip of the snout to the fork in the caudal fin (forklength) in mm. o Length measurements of juvenile and adult fish are made with measuring boards or tapes according to methods described in Anderson and Neumann Measurements include total length, fork length, midorbital-hypural length, and postorbital-hypural length. o WDFW personnel will measure hatchery smolts from the tip of the snout to the fork in the tail in millimeters (mm). Hatchery and wild origin adults captured at adult traps or found during spawning grounds surveys, or hatchery origin adults from the program captured in fisheries (after the program expands) will be measured from the tip of the snout to the fork in the tail to the nearest centimeter (cm).
Pilot demonstration of simplified process o Method is fairly well documented in literature (AFS Fisheries Techniques, 2 nd ed.) Started discussion on MonitoringMethods.org o Background, questions for community, asked for input Follow-up decision, enter methods New methods cited from AFS Fisheries Techniques
Follow-up communicate to group Additional follow-up: ask other method owners to delete length methods QUESTIONS? Next steps o Encourage other owners to delete old methods o Encourage protocol owners to reference new methods instead o Resolve MEPS vs. mid-orbital to hypural plate issue o Finalize and publish new methods o Tackle next topic for methods review
