1 UC Global Food Initiative Campus Food Access and Security Plan Subject Area: Campus: Campus Lead(s): Student Food Access and Security UC Santa Cruz Nancy N. Chen, Director of the Blum Center and Faculty, Overview Our Working Group Objectives include efforts to: Create visibility for existing programs and scale up operations Offer campus wide awareness of issues concerning student food insecurity Offer internships to enroll students in CARE & CalFresh services as well as develop campus nutrition ambassadors Address summer gap for students who do not have sufficient access over the summer Utilize Matching Funds and In Kind Support: from campus sources such as Measure 43 and partnerships across academic and operational facets of campus as well as local non profits Set up Food Insecurity Research Hub to map food insecurity for both on and off campus students The UCSC GFI subcommittee will plan to meet once a month (about three times per quarter) during Fall 2015 Spring 2016 in addition to sub project focused meetings and activities of members within our working group and their affiliates. Challenges Challenges currently include a lack of infrastructure and location for a main campus based site for our future Community Food Development Center. We also have transitions in leadership within our dining partners this summer and will be engaging interim leadership on their support and contributions during the process of selecting and hiring a new director. Summer also is a time of transition for student government leadership so we will be engaging incoming and outgoing leadership. We are looking to bring on a 50% FTE and hosting it in an interim location within Social Sciences and CASFS while the capacity and coordination of the FTE will be further developed for the long term placement in our campus structure. Timeline & Milestones [List events, milestones, and deliverables planned to be achieved with funding between now and June 2016; under Resource Responsible please note whether the funding for this line item is based on the UCOP GFI funds and/or matching support from your campus please be specific as to the campus funding source] 1 Spring 2015
