2 Exhibition: East-West Treasures: Works from the Permanent Collection Ongoing through Oct. 3 (EWC Gallery, Honolulu, Hawai`i) The exhibition features East-West Center gifts of art, architecture, and artifacts from the Asia Pacific region. EWC contact: Eric Chang, ASDP s NEH Landmarks Workshop for Community College Faculty August 1-7 (EWC) Theme: History and Commemoration: Legacies of the Pacific War Funded by: The National Endowment for the Humanities. The program incorporates lectures and discussion, opportunities for individual research, and visits to Pacific War sites in the Honolulu area. Presentations by scholars on the history and memory of the Pacific War will focus on key places and events that continue to be points of interest and controversy in interpreting the significance of the Pacific War. The workshop is a collaboration between the Center s Asian Studies Development Program, the National Park Service, and the Arizona Memorial Museum Association. EWC contact: Geoff White, WhiteG@EastWestCenter.org EWC New Student Orientation August 7 22 The two-week orientation program for new students will provide an overview of the EWC, UH, and Hawaii s unique multicultural community. This year there are 167 new fellows and affiliates from 33 countries. EWC contact: Al Harjati, HarjatiA@EastWestCenter.org Changing Faces Leadership Program August 8-19 Theme: Women as Innovator Entrepreneurs: Generating Economic Growth and Job Creation U.S. and the Asia Pacific region to discuss issues specific to women in leadership around the region. The 2010 program focuses on the role of innovative entrepreneurship in contributing to economic growth and job creation. EWC contact: Liz Dorn DornE@EastWestCenter.org Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) August 9 - May 16, 2011 The APLP links analysis of regional issues with experiential leadership learning in a ninemonth program of study. This year s program includes field study in China and an optional N.Y. and Washington, D.C. component. The program has alumni in 50 countries supporting a network of action across the region. EWC contact: Nina Dutra, Public Seminar: Variations in Regime Responses to Unregistered House Churches in China August 10 (EWC, Burns Hall, Rm 3012, 12-1 p.m.) Visiting Fellow Teresa Wright will examine the sources of variation in relations between government authorities and unregistered house church members in China today. EWC Contact: Anna Tanaka, TanakaA@EastWestCenter.org EWC/CGP Workshop Regional Policy and Pandemic Influenza August (EWC) This workshop will address the issue of how to implement and develop resilience through the integration of collective knowledge and experience beyond traditional national and international boundaries. The discussions will focus on policy implications to be shared among the policy community in Asia, including regional organizations such as ASEAN. (Participation is by invitation only.) EWC/USAID China Seminar August Theme: Managing Social and Institutional Change in China: Trends and Implications for the U.S. This seminar examines domestic social and institutional change in China with the objective of providing policy-oriented assessments of how China's changing political economy is likely to impact U.S. interests in the Asia Pacific. EWC Contact: Chris McNally, McnallyC@EastWestCenter.org 2010 EWC/KDI Conference August (EWC) Theme: Global Economic Crisis: Impacts, Transmission, and Recovery The EWC-Korea Development Institute (KDI) conference will investigate the causes of the global economic crisis and the transmission processes involved from a global perspective and the perspectives of emerging economies. Experts will focus on features unique to this crisis, the roles of financial markets, the real side of the economy, the roles of macroeconomic policies, and the significance of structural fundamentals, which will assist with macroeconomic policymaking to cope with the post-crisis environment. 4 research and development, manufacturing capacity, enabling infrastructure, and market development in the six selected green energy technologies: solar photovoltaic, wind power, LED lighting, smart grid, nuclear, and CCS. International Workshop on Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Urban Development Planning for Asian Coastal Cities Aug. 23 Sept. 1 (Bangkok, Thailand) Funding by: Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) In this workshop, urban planners, managers, policy makers, and researchers will focus on climate change risk and vulnerability assessment and its application to urban development planning and governance. China - U.S. Journalists Exchange September Study Tour Destinations: (U.S. participants: Beijing, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Honolulu; China participants: Washington, D.C.; New York City; and Los Angeles, Honolulu) Theme: China-US Relations: Impacts and Implications for the Global Economic Recovery Co-sponsors: All-China Journalists Association, Better Hong Kong Foundation This new program is designed to deepen public understanding of the two countries and their relationship. Six Chinese participants will visit U.S. cities, and their American counterparts will visit cities in China. The journalists will meet with government, business, and NGO leaders, academics, and other journalists. All participants will convene in Honolulu for a 2-day concluding program. This lecture is related to the East-West Treasures exhibition. The Australian American Leadership Dialogue (AALD) Sept (EWC Imin Center) The AALD is a bipartisan annual private initiative between Australia and the U.S. that brings together senior politicians, entrepreneurs, journalists, and academics from both countries to focus on strategic parameters of the bilateral relationship. 5 International Forum for Education (IFE) 2020 Education Leadership Institute September (Bangkok, Thailand) Theme: The Role of Asia-Pacific Higher Education in the Emergent Knowledge Society EWC coordinator: Terance Bigalke EWC contact: Cherylene Hidano, Performances and Outreach to Schools: HANDS Percussion Team from Malaysia Sept (Honolulu and neighbor islands) Forty percent of Malaysia s population is ethnically Chinese. This project represents the EWC s first time showcasing this important segment of the population. This Kuala Lumpur-based ensemble uses Chinese percussion instruments and incorporates martial arts. Honolulu performances will also include the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble. New Generation Seminar Sept. 26 Oct. 10 (Honolulu; Okinawa; Tokyo; and Seoul) Theme: Asia Pacific Security and the U.S. Role In this seminar, emerging leaders from the U.S. and Asia Pacific will explore the sensitivities surrounding the physical presence of U.S. troops, discuss the changing regional security needs and relationships, and will have a chance to see and better understand the realities of the tensions along the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Also included will be a small yurt and its decorations and accoutrements. The program will also examine the two countries efforts to facilitate joint research and development, and how each country promotes investment in fossil fuel sources and clean technologies.
