That shows world understanding at its best seeing a need and meeting that need even if it is not in your corner of the world. A beautiful thing about Rotary International Fellowships is that they allow us to grow in world understanding as we have the opportunity to develop friendships with other Rotarians all over the world in a way that is not available with Clubs. How cool is that and what an awesome opportunity! Are you taking advantage of all that our Fellowship has to offer? 2 Page 2 ROTARY PEN Message from President Ray Klinginsmith I want to assure Rotarians that we will not alter the values and attitudes that have made Rotary a premier organization one that is now on the world stage through Polio- Plus!. February 2011 Rotary DNA This Rotary year features a culture of innovation in which we are looking at all aspects of our policies, practices, and procedures to see if they can be modernized and improved. Not surprisingly for an old and large organization like ours, we are identifying many areas that could, and should, be brought up to date. But at the same time, I fully recognize that some things are so significant in Rotary s success that they are sacrosanct. They are referred to in the RI Strategic Plan as our core values, but I prefer to call them our DNA. They are the characteristics that distinguish Rotary from all other organizations. They are the essence of who Rotarians are and what Rotarians have in common around the world. The five core values named in the RI Strategic Plan are fellowship, service, integrity, diversity, and leadership. Young people prefer the word networking to our traditional word of fellowship, but to me they are equivalent. Both words lead to lasting friendships in our clubs, which keep us together between projects and which make Rotary membership truly priceless. Friendship is clearly the most essential element of Rotary s DNA! Rotarians should not worry that the current emphasis on modernization will damage our core values. That would be alien to Cowboy Logic, which includes the admonitions Remember that some things are not for sale and Know where to draw the line. I want to assure Rotarians that we will not alter the values and attitudes that have made Rotary a premier organization one that is now on the world stage through PolioPlus! We have so much to be proud of as Rotarians. This is our finest hour, and our best days are still ahead as we help our clubs to be Bigger, Better, and Bolder. 3 Page VOLUME 3 7, ISSUE 8 Page 3 Monthly Focus World Understanding Future Vision Plan provides incredible opportunity Rotary International News January 2011 The Future Vision pilot, launched seven months ago with 100 pilot districts, has already produced exceptional global grant projects with sustainable, measurable outcomes. Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar highlighted several early success stories of the Future Vision Plan while touting its benefits before an audience of incoming district governors at the fourth plenary session of the 2011 International Assembly, 18 January in San Diego, California, USA. "Future Vision represents a philosophical shift in the way the Foundation funds Rotarians' activities," Stenhammar said. "Under Future Vision, the Foundation asks Rotarians to start their planning by identifying a pressing need and working with the community to determine the best activity or combination of activities through which to address it, and then carry them out." One hundred districts were specially trained in San Diego a year ago and began testing a new grant model 1 July in the Future Vision pilot. All districts will begin using the model on 1 July Though change isn t painless, Stenhammar said, the plan will allow for increased flexibility, particularly for scholarships. District grants can fund scholars either locally or abroad at any level, for any length of time, either for a degree or certificate program or for a period of study. With global grants, clubs and districts may use their cash or District Designated Fund to receive a World Fund match for graduatelevel students studying abroad under one of the areas of focus. Global grants can fund students for a single year or for an entire degree program, up to four years in length. Stenhammar pointed to the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle, California, which has used two global grants for $30,000 each to sponsor a student from Quito, Ecuador, and another from Kampala, Uganda, to study peace and conflict resolution. He encouraged nonpilot districts to learn as much as they can about the plan and its opportunities at and in the Future Vision Pilot News newsletter. Earlier in the day, Foundation Trustee Chair-elect William B. Boyd outlined goals for the Foundation: Eradicating polio Increasing support for the Foundation Continuing progress on the Future Vision Plan Boyd said the areas of focus under the Future Vision Plan allow Rotarians to carry out projects with a common purpose, in a way that will benefit as many people as possible. "All of us should work to build those six areas of focus into the culture and thinking of every Rotary club," he said. "We should seek opportunities to build partnerships between clubs and districts, our Rotary Foundation, and other organizations that can join us in our mission to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty." Water for Life provides clean drinking water for Haiti By Ryan Hyland Rotary International News January 2011 Roy Sheldrick and other members of the Rotary Club of Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, have spent 15 years helping to provide clean drinking water for 300,000 people in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti. A year after a massive earthquake crippled the country, followed by a deadly cholera outbreak, their work in the region is more important than ever. Sheldrick and his wife, Norma, founded Water for Life after taking part in a service trip to Haiti with their church in The nonprofit organization, supported by the Ancaster club and District 7090 (parts of Canada and New York, USA), drills wells to provide clean and accessible water in Haiti. To date, the project has raised more than US$1.5 million for 219 wells. It has also helped construct more than 350 latrines. "There is a desperate need for clean water in Haiti," says Sheldrick. "The fear of cholera made the need so much worse. More and more people are relying on our wells. They are lifesavers." With the main river in the Artibonite Valley tainted by cholera, the wells are a crucial source of clean and accessible water. Wells have been installed in schools and medical centers, including Albert Schweitzer Hospital, the largest medical facility in the valley. "We had to raise money and help build a new wing of the hospital because of the cholera outbreak. They were treating more patients for cholera than for trauma following the earthquake," says Sheldrick. Humanitarian grants Since 1998, the Ancaster club and its Haitian partners have been (Continued on page 4)

The grants have helped the program become more sustainable. "With the leveraged contributions from the Foundation, Water for Life has expanded to do more work for the communities, including teaching Haitians how to maintain the wells," says Sheldrick. "We trained plumbers and created all kinds of jobs. Water takes them out of poverty." Villages must undergo training before receiving a well, and Haitian Rotarians have set up a supervisory committee to make sure the wells are tested regularly and maintained. Each well costs $5,000 and is used by an average of 500 people. Sheldrick sees the difference the wells have made. The valley residents are among the healthiest in the country, he says. "Access to clean water is a lifeor-death matter," he says. "I know that when a well is installed, the entire village benefits. They don't have to walk miles for dirty water. They can use clean water from their own backyard." Sheldrick says he will continue to help build wells in Haiti for the rest of his life. "I never tire of visiting the wells and seeing the many Haitians who come to these sources for clean water," he says. "You can see by the smile on their faces how happy they are. Giving clean water to the Haitian people brings hope for tomorrow." Pakistan launches emergency action plan against polio By Dan Nixon Rotary International News January 2011 Responding to a sharp increase in the number of polio cases in Pakistan in 2010, the government has launched the National Emergency Action Plan for Polio Eradication Developed by national and international health experts at the request of President Asif Ali Zardari, the plan s two main goals are to stop polio outbreaks by mid and halt transmission of the disease by yearend. Pakistan was the only one of the world s four polio-endemic countries to see an increase in polio cases last year compared with 89 in And Pakistan s total accounted for more than 60 percent of all cases among the four, which also include Afghanistan, India, and Nigeria. That increase was a cause of alarm for the nations of the world, who were preparing to usher in, [in] the near future, a world without the scourge of this disease, says health minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin. Failure is no option. We have come this far after years of efforts with the support of our international partners, and we must now finish the job with a more focused approach toward the last remaining bottlenecks that threaten to reverse the gains we have made. A national task force will oversee implementation of the plan, which is aimed at reaching children in high-risk districts, mobile populations, and insecure areas. There will be strict oversight of the plan at the national and provincial levels through monitoring cells, Zardari said at a 24 January ceremony in Islamabad to launch the plan. We shall be working on a fast-track emergency plan with the support of our security forces to access children and households in the security-sensitive areas. Mobilizing clubs Rotarian coordinators assigned by the Pakistan PolioPlus Committee are mobilizing Rotary clubs to provide support in the country s four provinces. Club members will assist with the effort to cover every nook and corner of the country, says Aziz Memon, chair of the committee. We are committed to a polio-free Pakistan. The plan s progress will be evaluated by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative s independent monitoring board, established in 2010 to assess the GPEI s effectiveness in fulfilling its strategic plan. Rotary is a spearheading partner of the initiative, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the launch ceremony, Zardari thanked Rotary International and the other global partners for their support of the emergency action plan. In recognition of Rotary s role in the drive toward polio eradication in Pakistan, he awarded the President s Award for Pride of Performance to Memon and the Star of Good Conduct to International PolioPlus Committee Chair Robert S. Scott. We need this spirit of partnership in the country at this critical time, Zardari said. No challenge is too big to stop us from saving our children from polio and ridding the world of this disease.

5 VOLUME 7, ISSUE 8 Page 5 News and Tidbits from Rotary International Reach Within to Embrace Humanity is RI theme By Joseph Derr Rotary International News January 2011 RI President-elect Kalyan Banerjee will ask Rotarians to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity during the Rotary year. Banerjee unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2011 International Assembly, a training event for incoming district governors. He urged participants to harness their inner resolve and strength to achieve success in Rotary. "In order to achieve anything in this world, a person has to use all the resources he can draw on. And the only place to start is with ourselves and within ourselves," Banerjee said. Once Rotarians find their inner strength, he continued, they can accomplish great things in their communities and around the world. "Discover yourself, develop the strengths within you, and then unhesitatingly, unflinchingly, go forth and encircle the world, to embrace humanity," he said. Banerjee emphasized the family as a starting point in serving others. "The communities we live in are not built of individual people but of families -- families living in homes together, sharing their lives and their resources and their common destinies. Good families lead to good neighborhoods, and good neighborhoods build good communities." Rotarians can focus on projects that support families, such as those that provide safe housing or improve maternal and child health, he said. Continuity in Rotary s work, including polio eradication, is also important, Banerjee said. "There are so many things we are indeed good at: working for clean, safe water; spreading literacy; working in so many ways with the New Generations, our youth, in our newest Avenue of Service and assisting them to become the leaders of tomorrow." Citing Mahatma Gandhi s call to "be the change you wish to see in the world," Banerjee said Rotarians should also focus on change. "If we wish for peace, we start by living in peace ourselves, in our homes and in our communities," he explained. "If we wish environmental degradation to stop, if we wish to reduce child mortality or to prevent hunger, we must be the instrument of that change -- and recognize that it must start within us, with each of us." The theme inspired the roomful of Rotary leaders, including Jogesh Gambhir, governor-elect of District 3250 (India). It is a touching theme, but also very purposeful and meaningful, said Gambhir. I m sure we can inspire the clubs into action to solve the problems in the community. That s the ultimate goal of Rotary. There are no words for me to describe how remarkable it was. To me, he was right on and weaved everything together beautifully," said Jane Millar, governor-elect of District 6290 (parts of Ontario, Canada, and Michigan, USA). "I am so thrilled to be a district governor when this man is president. I loved the focus on family, continuity, and change," she added. "Family is the center of everything, and not just our immediate family. It s also about the family of Rotary and the world as one big family." Changemaker Award to recognize clubs that make an impact By Joseph Derr Rotary International News 21 January 2011 RI President-elect Kalyan Banerjee will introduce a new recognition, the Changemaker Award, to accompany the Presidential Citation during the Rotary year. Banerjee, who said he will encourage Rotarians to focus on change, explained that the Changemaker Award will recognize Rotary clubs that make an extraordinary impact through their work in the Avenues of Service. To qualify for a Changemaker Award, clubs will choose from a menu of activities and complete a minimum number for each avenue. All activities must be undertaken and completed between 1 July 2011 and 1 March District governors will select three clubs in the district -- the topperforming small, medium, and large clubs -- to be entered into a zone and international competition, culminating in the opportunity to be recognized onstage at the 2012 RI Convention in Bangkok, Thailand. Activities include demonstrating a net gain in membership over three straight years ( ) for Club Service and conducting a career counseling or vocational training program in the community for Vocational Service. The Presidential Citation will recognize achievements related to membership development and contributing to The Rotary Foundation, and will feature club and district recognition categories. The top 15 districts and 15 clubs certified by governors and validated by RI will be recognized onstage at the 2012 convention. Clubs will select from criteria such as increasing the number of younger professionals in the club by 2 percent and inducting RI or Rotary Foundation program alumni. Districts will choose from a variety of goals, including 100 percent participation in the Annual Programs Fund. For Banerjee, the Changemaker Award and Presidential Citation reinforce the work of each Rotarian throughout the year to make the world a better place through service will be the year of the individual Rotarian, the year when we recognize and applaud all that they do for Rotary and for the lives of others whom they do not know and have not met, said Banerjee during the farewell dinner banquet at the 2011 International Assembly. New pilot programs support member diversity By Arnold R. Grahl Rotary International News January 2011 Rotary clubs interested in taking part in one of four new pilot programs approved recently by the RI Board can now download an application form and related fact sheets. The three-year pilots -- satellite club, associate member, corporate member, and innovative and flexible Rotary club -- will allow participating Rotary clubs to experiment with flexible membership requirements and club operations beginning 1 July. Each one is designed to improve recruitment and retention, allow for flexibility in club operations and structures, and provide Rotary clubs with an opportunity to explore new and innovative ways to promote member diversity -- all goals of the RI Strategic Plan. Other potential benefits include improved leadership, engagement, and participation among members and increased support of The Rotary Foundation. The pilots will allow RI to collect data and analyze results from the participating clubs to evaluate the effectiveness of each change. Clubs have until 1 April to submit applications to Rotary International to be considered for a pilot. Read more about the pilots, and download related fact sheets and an application. Information and applications are also being sent to each club this month. Up to 200 clubs will be selected for each pilot. Rotary clubs must have been chartered before 30 June 2009 to be considered. Satellite Club The Satellite Club Pilot Program will assess the impact of allowing a Rotary club to conduct multiple club meetings during a week, each taking place at a different location, on a different day, or at a different time. Rotarians in the satellite club would belong to a host club but would meet at their own time and location and could have their own projects. This structure may be helpful in areas with many rural communities as well as in large metropolitan areas. The pilot could give a small, weak, or struggling club the opportunity to become connected to a larger, active, and vibrant club in a nearby area and receive ongoing support. Associate Member The Associate Member Pilot Program gives clubs a tool for teaching prospective members about the club and the expectations of membership before they join. Clubs would determine the length of time a person could remain an associate member before becoming an active member. The pilot is aimed at potential members who may be uncertain of the commitment involved with membership. It will provide them with an opportunity to get acquainted with a club's members, programs, and projects, thereby increasing retention. Corporate Member The Corporate Member Pilot Program will allow a corporation or company in a club's area to become a member of the Rotary club and appoint up to four people to serve as club members. These corporate members will attend club meetings, participate in projects, and vote on club matters, and are eligible to serve as club officers and committee members. One of the designees must be a member of the corporation's senior executive group, but the others could hold any full-time managerial role. Only one of the designees would need to attend club meetings at a time, yet each would be considered an official member of the club and would be required to pay RI and annual club dues, as determined by the club. Innovative and Flexible Rotary Club Under the Innovative and Flexible Rotary Club Pilot Program, clubs will be allowed to change one element of its format or structure as an experiment. For example, a club might offer family memberships or conduct a blend of online and inperson meetings. The change should not duplicate another pilot, however. The pilot is focused on encouraging Rotary clubs to be fun, dynamic,

Rotary names attorney John Hewko as its new top executive Rotary International News January 2011 Rotary International has named John Hewko, an attorney with extensive international experience in both the private and public sectors, to be the global humanitarian service organization s new top executive, serving as its general secretary. In this position, Hewko will manage more than 600 employees of Rotary International and its charitable arm, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, USA, with regional offices in seven countries, Rotary s Secretariat supports the activities of more than 33,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas, with a combined membership of 1.2 million men and women. The Rotary Foundation annually distributes over $180 million to fund a variety of educational programs and humanitarian projects throughout the world. Hewko is a former partner with the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie and was vice president at the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. government agency established in 2004 to deliver U.S. foreign assistance to the world s poorest countries. He begins work on 1 July at a key moment in Rotary s 106-year history. Hewko will play a lead role in the implementation of the organization s newly revised strategic plan that envisions Rotary s expanded engagement in areas such as maternal and child health, water and sanitation, disease prevention and treatment, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, and peace studies and conflict prevention/resolution. His tenure could also see the successful conclusion of Rotary s principal humanitarian initiative: its 25-year campaign to eradicate the crippling disease polio, a goal that is more than 99 percent complete. Hewko also will interact with government and business leaders to enhance Rotary s global visibility and forge new strategic partnerships worldwide to achieve common objectives and maximize the use of resources. He also will work to expand and strengthen Rotary s current relationship with organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and others. In announcing Hewko s hiring, Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith hailed his visionary leadership and predicted that under Hewko s leadership Rotary will continue to grow in numbers, stature, and involvement in making the world a better place. Rotary is fortunate to have attracted a candidate with John Hewko s proven ability and extensive international experience, Klinginsmith said. His leadership will be an important asset for Rotary in the next few years. During his 15 years at Baker & McKenzie, Hewko specialized in international corporate transactions in emerging markets. He participated in the establishment of the firm s Moscow office and was the managing partner of its offices in Kyiv and Prague. While in Ukraine in the early 1990s, Hewko assisted the working group that prepared the initial draft of the new Ukrainian post-soviet constitution and was a charter member of the first Rotary club in Kyiv. Prior to joining Baker & McKenzie, he worked for leading Brazilian and Argentine law firms and later with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington and New York handling Latin American and project finance transactions. In 2004, Hewko entered public service with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). As vice president for operations and compact development, Hewko had primary responsibility for managing MCC s relationship with its 26 partner countries in Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. During his tenure he oversaw the development, negotiation, and approval of foreign assistance agreements with 18 countries totaling $6.3 billion for projects in infrastructure, agriculture, water, sanitation, health, and education. For the past year, he has been a non-resident senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where his writing has focused on international development and foreign policy issues. Hewko is a 1985 graduate of Harvard Law School, and holds a master s degree from Oxford University (where he studied as a Marshall Scholar) and a bachelor s degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He speaks six languages. I am delighted to be joining Rotary and honored to be able to participate in the organization s mission to promote world peace and understanding by addressing some of the root causes of conflict, such as poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, and the global water and sanitation crisis, Hewko said. Rotary s global membership of 1.2 million business and professional leaders -- supported by a dedicated, professional staff -- is a powerful resource that is making a meaningful global and grassroots contribution to that goal. Just look at what Rotary already has accomplished in the area of polio prevention and eradication. Hewko emerged from a field of 440 potential candidates for Rotary s top job. The Rotary search committee worked with Korn/Ferry International, the world s largest executive search firm. Hewko replaces Edwin Futa, who is retiring after 10 years as general secretary. Hewko and his wife, Margarita, have a daughter, Maria, who graduates this year from high school in the Washington, D.C., area.

District 9800 (Australia) has allocated an amount of its district grant funds to send a medical team to Timor-Leste to implement a training program for midwives to help reduce the mortality rate of mothers and infants during childbirth. The district has also budgeted an amount to install a solar-powered water pump for a school and neighboring community in Tanzania. District 2070 (San Marino; Italy) is planning for a number of large district grant activities, including sending medical volunteers to humanitarian projects in Kosovo, Peru, and Madagascar, medical equipment to Congo, and a vocational training team to District 7490 (New Jersey, USA). The Rotary Club of San Ignacio, Belize (District 4250), is host sponsor together with the international sponsor Rotary Club of South Cowichan (Mill Bay), B.C., Canada (District 5020), on a project to construct an open drainage system on the campus of Sacred Heart College (high school) in Belize to prevent flooding of the school and the breeding of mosquitos that transmit dengue fever. There is also being implemented a multiplatform public health education campaign in cooperation with school authorities, the municipality, and community leaders, which will make the project sustainable.
