Friday, April 20, 1951, Dr. John A. Perkins was formally inaugurated as the twenty-first president of the University of Delaware. The impressive ceremony took place on the campus at Newark.

9 Friday, April 20, 1951, Dr. John A. Perkins was formally inaugurated as the twenty-first president of the University of Delaware. The impressive ceremony took place on the campus at Newark. Notables from every section of the state and in many fields of education attended. Academic garb, embellished with school colors, was the order of the day. Dr. Perkins who has been functioning as the school's president for nearly six months gave the principal address. In the academic procession which preceded the ceremony was this group of platform guests (shbwn above) headed by (left) Mrs. T. Muncy Keith, president of the Alumnae Association, and Milton L. Draper, who represented the Alumni Association. Behind them are Samuel J. Talucci, president of the Student Government Association and John G. Leach, a trustee. Next can be seen Henry F. dupont, Warren C. Newton and Robert H. Richards, all trustees. Others visible to the rear include Henry B. dupont, Dr. Charles M. A. Stine, and Judge Richard S. Rodney, also trustees, and Carl S. Rankin, representing the town of Newark. Then in academic regalia, are Dr. Augustus H. Able of the faculty, and Bishop Edmond J. FitzMaurice. Behind the Bishop is Dr. Perkins. Governor Carvel is behind the president, and Dr. W. Owen Sypherd is beside the governor. Bishop Arthur R. McKinstry is behind Dr. Sypherd.
