Carolina 9:00 p.m. * Denotes SoCon Game PLAYER OF THE WEEK Brett James - Elon SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Elon s Brett James has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games December the league office announced Tuesday (Dec. 23). James helped Elon improve to 4-4 on the season with wins over Lees-McRae (81-52) and Lipscomb (79-76) last week. The Richmond, Va., native averaged 22.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last week. He also added four assists, four steals and two blocked shots. James became just the 32nd member of Elon s 1,000-point club with 16 points against Lees- McRae in just 23 minutes of action on Friday. He then scored a career-high 28 points in Elon s overtime win over Lipscomb on Monday (Dec. 22). James went 4-for-8 from three-point range in the win, including a triple with 20 seconds left in overtime that gave the Phoenix a four-point cushion (78-74). He connected on 57 percent of his field goal attempts (17-30) for the week. James is currently fifth in the SoCon in scoring (15.1 ppg) and ranks sixth in steals (1.9 spg).

2 APPALACHIAN STATE MOUNTAINEERS Appalachian State leads the league with 42.6 rebounds per game. The Mountaineers are also tops in the conference and 25th nationally in rebounding margin (+7.9). ASU has started 2-0 in conference play for the second time in three years. The Mountaineers began the season 4-0 in league play, en route to a 15-3 mark. It is the third time they have started the league schedule 2-0 under Houston Fancher. The Mountaineers return to the court December 30 when they host Milligan. CHATTANOOGA MOCS Senior Stephen McDowell is second in the conference in scoring with 18.9 points per game. He has been the primary scoring threat for the Mocs as of late, as he has averaged 23.4 points per contest over his last five games. Senior Keyron Sheard has continued to be a steady hand at the point for Chattanooga. Sheard is third in the league with 4.9 assists per game. He has handed out at least six assists in four different games. The Mocs play host to the Dr. Pepper Classic when they face Wesleyan on December 29. UTC then squares off against Niagara on December 30. ELON PHOENIX Senior guard Brett James netted 16 points in a victory over Lees-McRae to surpass the 1,000-point mark for his career. James is the 32nd member of Elon s 1,000-point club. In the win over Lipscomb, James added a careerbest 28 points to up his career total to 1,039, the 27th-best total in school history. Chris Long set a new career high with 10 assists in the win over Lipscomb. It was the first time an Elon player finished with at least 10 assists since Steven Harvin recorded 10 against Chattanooga on Dec. 20, The Phoenix visit Maryland on December 30. UNC GREENSBORO SPARTANS UNC Greensboro leads the league in defending the three-point line. The Spartans have held their opponents to just 31 percent shooting from beyond the arc. UNCG has also defended the lane as well, ranking third in the SoCon in blocked shots (3.1 bpg). Mikko Koivisto has made at least one three-point shot in each of his last 33 games which is the third-longest active streak in the nation. Ryan Toolson of Utah Valley State owns the longest active streak with 56 consecutive games. UNC Greensboro hosts Akron December 31. SAMFORD BULLDOGS Samford is the fifth-ranked team in the nation in fewest personal fouls per game. The Bulldogs are only averaging 13.4 fouls per contest and have only allowed opponents to shoot a total of 119 free throws. In Samford s victory against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 18, the Bulldogs shot 57.9 percent from the field, including a torrid 70.6-percent performance in the second half. With the win, Samford remained undefeated at home this season and improved its record to 4-0 when playing at the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs are shooting an impressive 51.4 shooting percentage from the field and a 43.2 mark from beyond the arc at home. WESTERN CAROLINA CATAMOUNTS Western Carolina is 5-4 this season, marking the first time since the season that WCU has entered the holiday break above.500 on the season that year, WCU was 4-3 coming off an overtime win at Arkansas. WCU leads the league with 10.8 steals per game. Harouna Mutombo is second in the league with 2.8 steals per game, while Brigham Waginger is third (2.2 spg). The Catamounts return to the hardwood December 31 when they visit UNC Asheville. TEAM REPORTS COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON COUGARS The Cougars moved to 10-1 with wins over Winthrop and UNC Wilmington this week. The Cougars are off to their best start since opening the season with a 10-1 mark. College of Charleston has utilized a dynamic offense through the early portion of the season. CofC leads the conference in field goal percentage (.499) and three point percentage (.389). The Cougars are second in the league with a +9.5 scoring margin. The Cougars host Davidson Monday at Carolina First Arena. DAVIDSON WILDCATS In addition to an offense that leads the conference with 83.3 points per game, the Wildcats have been stout on the defensive end as well. Davidson leads the league in field goal percentage defense (.412). Junior Stephen Curry has been named to the Naismith Watch List. He was also named 2008 Sporting News College Athlete of the Year. Andrew Lovedale has been named a candidate for the Lowe s Senior Class Award. Davidson puts its 31-game conference winning streak on the line Monday at College of Charleston. FURMAN PALADINS Furman is second in the conference in blocked shots. The Paladins average 3.4 blocks per game. Sophomore Bryson Barnes leads the league with 1.7 blocks per contest. Barnes has recorded at least one blocked shot in eight of Furman s nine games this season. Sophomore Jordan Miller has paced the Paladins in scoring in seven of their first nine games, including a career-high 26 points against North Florida. Furman closes out non-conference play when it hosts Berry College on December 29, at Carolina First Court at Timmons Arena. GEORGIA SOUTHERN EAGLES Head coach Jeff Price ranks 13th all-time for most wins at a SoCon school with 160 victories at Georgia Southern. Price needs just nine more victories to pass Malcolm J. Pitt (Richmond) for 12th place. Sophomore Willie Powers is one of the best dual threats in the league. Powers is 11th in the league with 14.2 points per game. He also ranks seventh in the conference with 3.2 assists per game. Powers is tenth in the SoCon with 1.6 steals per game. The Eagles are off until January 3 when they host Chattanooga in their second league game of the season. THE CITADEL BULLDOGS The Citadel has made tremendous strides on the defensive end of the floor from last season. The Bulldogs yielded 74.3 points per game in , but have allowed just 66.8 points through 12 games this season, the second-best mark in the conference. Sophomore Cameron Wells has distinguished himself as a multi-dimensional player for the Bulldogs. Wells is eighth in the SoCon in scoring (14.9 ppg) and also ranks 10th in assists (2.8 apg). He is 14th in the league in free throw percentage (.744) and is second in the conference in minutes played (33.7 mpg). The Citadel hosts Bethune-Cookman on January 3. WOFFORD TERRIERS Junior Salters is currently fourth in the conference in scoring at 17.3 points per game. He has led the team in scoring in five of the eight games this season. Salters is also fourth in the league in steals (2.1 spg). The Terries have connected on 72 percent of their free throw attempts, the third-highest mark in the conference. Wofford also ranks third in three point field goal percentage, as the Terriers have connected on 36 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc. Wofford travels to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy January 2.

The league has garnered the number one strength of schedule rating among 31 Division I conferences. Three of the league s teams (Davidson, 33; College of Charleston, 92; Wofford, 99) all rank in the top 100. Streaking Davidson owns a 31-game conference winning streak after defeating Chattanooga, on December 13. The Wildcats won their final 10 games during league play in , before posting a 20-0 mark last year. Davidson s streak is the third-longest conference consecutive wins streak in league history. West Virginia won a league-best 44 straight conference games from North Carolina won 34 straight league games from T F r Three The Southern Conference was the first league to implement a three-point line, establishing the mark at 22 feet during the season. Western Carolina s Ronnie Carr made the first three-point field goal in college basketball history in a game against Middle Tennessee State on November 29, Georgia Southern s Willie Powers made the first three-point field goal for the season, knocking down a triple against Houston on November 10. It was the first made three-point field goal from the new distance of 20-feet, nine inches. N n-c n eren e S he ing Southern Conference teams are scheduled to take on some of the top competition across the country. Seven of the 12 SoCon teams will participate in at least one exempt tournament this winter, spanning from Cancun, Mexico (The Citadel) to Alaska (Western Carolina). SoCon teams are scheduled to participate in the Air Force Classic, Cancun Challenge, Charleston Classic, Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, Drake Invitational, Great Alaska Shootout, Jimmy V Classic, NIT Season Tip-Off, Puerto Rico Tip-Off and Wooden Tradition. Bra ketb ter 2009 Four Southern Conference teams will take part in the 2009 ESPNU BracketBusters event February The event will feature 13 nationally televised games - on either ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU - selected from a pool of 102 teams. Davidson and Georgia Southern have been designated as home teams during the event, while Appalachian State and Elon will take to the road. The matchups for the 13 nationally televised games will be announced Feb. 2. 4 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES CONFERENCE NOTES Tourney Time The 2009 Southern Conference Tournament will be held March 6-9 at The McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga. All 12 members of the Southern Conference will take part in the conference tournament. The championship game, scheduled for March 9, will be televised by ESPN2. The 2009 tournament will be the second time the league has held its conference championship in Chattanooga, after using the same site in The host Mocs downed UNC Greensboro, 65-62, in the final that year. Hall o Fame Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino announced the formation of the SoCon Hall of Fame for The league will induct it s inaugural class during a ceremony in Spartanburg, S.C., on May 9. The Southern Conference is in it s 88th season of intercollegiate competition and will begin recognizing many prominent student-athletes, coaches and administrators from the 43 current and former institutions that have been a part of the league s distinguished history. Among the nominees for consideration from Southern Conference men s basketball are Dick Groat (Duke), Hot Rod Hundley (West Virginia), Frank Selvy (Furman) and Jerry West (West Virginia). E erien e on the Ben h All 12 head coaches return to the bench for The current leage head coaches have a combined 84 years of experience within the Southern Conference. Davidson s Bob McKillop is the longest tenured coach in the SoCon, entering his 20th season on the bench for the Wildcats. Bobby Cremins (College of Charleston), Ed Conroy (The Citadel) and Jeff Jackson (Furman) are all in their third season with their current school. E erien e on the Court The 12 Southern Conference schools combined to return 105 lettermen from the season, an average of 8.75 returners per team. Eleven of the 12 SoCon teams returned at least eight lettermen from Three schools (College of Charleston, The Citadel and Furman) returned all five starters for Ten of the 12 leagues schools returned at least three starters from S he ule Change The season will mark the final year of the 20-game conference schedule in the Southern Conference. The SoCon Council of Presidents decided in early November to move to an 18-game conference schedule beginning with the season. Preseason Plau its The Davidson Wildcats were ranked 20th in both preseason polls released by the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today. It was the first time a SoCon team has appeared in the preseason rankings since Davidson was ranked fifth to start the season. Ne Membershi Samford University, located in Birmingham, Ala., begins its first season as a member of the Southern Conference after officially joining the league on July 1, The Bulldogs, who play their home games in the 5,000-seat Pete Hanna Center, finished last season 14-16, including a mark in Ohio Valley conference play.
