2 President s Message I had an interesting experience last week. Normally Mike Coan acts as our liaison to the Salute to Construction organization but the Salute meeting conflicted with one of our Regional Conference meetings and he could not attend. I decided to go in his stead. Having never attended a Salute meeting, I really had no idea what to expect or for that matter what the Salute to Construction was all about. Really all that knew was that we (CSI) sent them dues every year to maintain our status as a sponsor. At the meeting I was surrounded by a group of people almost as diverse as our CSI meetings. AIA, MSU, Contractors Association, and many other organizations were represented at this meeting. Investigating farther I found that this organization was dedicated to recruiting people of all ages into the construction industry. They were talking about the upcoming 26th Annual Career Days program which is where industry professionals of all walks of construction go out to schools and talk with youth about career opportunities in our industry. Suddenly it hit me! When I was 17 years old at Willard High School a group from the Salute came my school and talked with me and several others in the cafeteria. My dad, Jerry Miller, was there with three other people answering questions and explaining their roles in construction. Twenty years later here I am having held several jobs within the construction industry. It is hard to say if the Salute meeting in High School was the guiding light that led me to where I am, but it sure did not hurt. Ironically, one of the main reasons that I was supposed to attend this meeting is to coordinate with Salute on our new Bridge to Youth program that Mike Coan and I are currently developing which is also designed to lure youth down the same road. The cycle begins again... Questions or comments? You may contact Travis at: Office: travis@millerstructures.com Travis Miller, P.E., CSI Southwest Missouri Chapter CSI Vol. 18-Issue 10 Page-2
3 Basis of Design We all deal with this topic on a everyday basis being Architects, Designers, Sales Reps., etc. Many people believe to achieve the Basis of Design is to write a specification focusing on the Qualities critical to the system s effectiveness and occupant comfort. However, it is surprising to see how everyone has a different opinion and approach to achieve this. Fortunately they all seem to work. I asked several of you for your opinions on which one of the following sample specifications is the best. Example A Example B <Tile Company 1> Fine Fissured, Etc Angled Tegular, Etc Size: 2x2x5/8 Etc Color : White OR Fine Fissured Angled Tegular, Etc 2x2x5/8 Etc Color : White A: Acceptable Manufactures of Acoustic Tile 1. <Tile Company 1> 2. <Tile Company 2> 3. <Tile Company 3> In your opinion, which is the most complete, clear, and concise Basis of Design? Which best demonstrates that the project concept is being fully understood? Below are responses and opinions from architects and Sales Reps that I would like to share. Responses from Architects/Designers The people who are in the trenches dealing with thousands of specs for one common goal a finished product that makes not only the owner proud but themselves too. Example: A It summarizes applicable design criteria-no exceptions. It meets my ultimate concept for a fully complete project. It shows I m fully comfortable and confident in my choices. Example: B Provides a sound basis for carrying out a good project model. It s a true Open Bid. It creates a non-objective and complete Basis of Design. Responses from Sales Reps/Distributors The people who make you exercise an extra hour every week from all the bagels and goodies they bring to your office. After poling, I was quite surprised at the responses of this group. You probably think Example A would be the most popular choice since it is proprietary, but the majority wanted a specification based on the same characteristics. Put another way, they preferred a specification where all manufacturers were on an equal playing field. This allows all involved to be able to bid and fulfill the design teams Basis of Design. Please consider the two examples above and give me your opinions. I look forward to your responses on the aspects of the Basis of Design. Happy reflecting... - Rob Gentry, CSI Southwest Missouri Chapter CSI Vol. 18-Issue 10 Page-3
4 What did you miss last month? There were several announcements to begin the evening: The meeting started off with collecting several bags and boxes of donations for the Family Violence Center. Thank you to all who participated and if you still have stuff you want to give, donations are still being accepted at Gaskin Hill Norcross, 300 S. Jefferson, Springfield, MO Chris Carson reminded us all of the upcoming Ozarks Energy One Conference See details for this event on page 7. Laura Jean Derrick provided an update on the planning of our upcoming North Central Regional Conference to be held next May in Branson. The budget for this event will be finalized within the next couple of weeks. Dianne Slattery, PhD, P.E., spoke to us about the ongoing series of seminars for Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repairs & Painting. These seminars provide EPA Lead Safety Certification as required under rule 40 CFR 745. The next seminar will be on November 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. She also mentioned an upcoming joint presentation with the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers and the local AIA chapter. The presentation called Bringing Lean Concepts to the Design Process will be held on October 7th. Contact Dianne at for more information. Our evening presentation was provided by Mr. Dave Combes, the Director of Commercial Sales for Honeywell Security. The presentation titled Alarm Monitoring Communications Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow took us on a journey through the evolution of alarm communication systems. The journey began with the Town Crier of the 1600 s which was basically a man walking the streets at night looking for mischief and went through the pioneering technologies that lead to our modern day alarm and detection systems. In 1852, shortly after the advent of both the battery and the telegraph Dr. William Channing conceived a large municipal system to transmit fire alarms to fire stations across the city of Boston using Morse Code. Mr. Moses Farmer, an electrician, devised a system using an electromagnet to open and close a circuit at (Continued on page 5) Southwest Missouri Chapter CSI Vol. 18-Issue 10 Page-4
5 (Continued from page 4) regular intervals. Mr. Edwin Holmes began marketing electromagnetic burglar alarms in Boston and New York. His Boston Central Station not only monitored a system of burglar alarms, but served as the first telephone central office in the United States. The next significant advancement in both burglar and fire alarm transmission came in the early 1880 s when Chauncey McCulloh devised a system allowing multiple subscribers to share a single circuit connected to a central office thereby significantly reducing the overall cost of such a connection. This McCulloh Loop method of communication remained essentially unchanged for several decades while detection equipment continued to evolve. Internet technology of today has revolutionized security systems. With the advent of digital communication in the 1970 s, central station signaling finally took a major evolutionary step toward the technology we recognize today. That technology continues to advance with wireless communications now joined by IP connectivity. Detection equipment continues to develop as well, with more sophisticated devices and more reliable sensors providing better sensitivity and greater security. Travis Miller, P.E., CSI Through trickery and slight-of-hand our Past President, Mike Coan was able to show up late for the meeting, put his business card in the hat, and win the door prize.
