The number of mster's degrees from these deprtments rose %, nd the number of degrees continued to rise for the fifth yer in row, this yer by %. These deprtments project increses for of % for bchelor's degrees, % for both mster's nd degrees. (It should be noted tht these projections re usully higher thn ctul counts yer lter.) During the yer, the committee studied the chemistry progrms of of the pproved schools nd of schools pplying for ACS pprovl. Ech evlution involved review of extensive documentry mterils submitted by the deprtment describing the sttus of the progrm. During, schools were dded to the ACS-pproved list, seven schools were put on probtion, two were removed from probtion, two were continued on probtion, nd two schools were removed from the pproved list. In fll, the committee published its revised guidelines for ACS-pproved schools. As prt of this revision, ACS divisions hd been sked to prticipte in prepring recommendtions of the topics tht should be covered in n undergrd-

Appendix mterils were ccordingly ssembled for nlyticl chemistry, biochemistry, chemicl helth nd sfety, chemicl informtion retrievl, computers in chemistry, industril chemistry, inorgnic chemistry, orgnic chemistry, nd polymer chemistry nd sent to the ACS-pproved schools in My. To spred discussion on proposed chnges in the guidelines for ACSpproved schools over period of time nd to shre thoughts concerned with undergrdute chemicl eduction with the pproved schools, the committee decided to prepre nd send to the pproved schools from time to time position ppers on topics of mutul interest. The first two in this series, "Qulittive Orgnic Anlysis Course" nd "Advnced Synthesis Lbortory," were sent to the pproved schools in fll, nd the third, "Biochemistry in the Core Curriculum," ws prepred Committee members, Henry A. In n effort to keep brest of trends in chemicl eduction nd to remin current in its understnding of the vrious needs nd situtions of the schools on the ACS-pproved list, the committee instituted series of visits by two-person tems from the committee to representtive institutions on the pproved list. Three visits were mde in, nd nine more re plnned for. The committee decided to prepre CPT newsletter to be sent to ll chemistry fculty members in fouryer colleges nd universities in the U.S. nd lso, for the first issue, to ech two-yer college chemistry progrm. The purpose of the newsletter is to highlight issues in chemicl eduction tht re currently being discussed by the committee, to provide informtion on new projects the committee is undertking, nd to invite comments nd suggestions concerning CPT-relted issues from chemistry fculty members. Preprtion of the DGR Online, computerized dtbse of ll informtion in the ACS Directory of Grdute Reserch s well s multidimensionl concordnce of the reserch interests of the fculty members listed in this edition, continued nd ws scheduled to be completed in erly. A tsk force to discuss the issue of biochemistry t the undergrdute level ws estblished with representtives from the Americn Society of Biologicl Chemists, nd CPT representtives were sked to meet with the Pnel on Service Courses of the Mthemticl Assocition of Americ to discuss the nture of the mthemtics courses given to chemistry mjors.
