1 2012 ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE BASEBALL A-10 BASEBALL CONTACT: MELISSA KRISTOFAK O: The Atlantic 10 Conference and CBS Sports Network have announced the addition of three nationally-televised league contests, including the 2012 A-10 Baseball Championship game. The outing will be aired live on May 26 from Houlihan Park on the campus of Fordham University at ET. Charlotte redshirt senior ANDREW SMITH was named a Third-Team Preseason Louisville Slugger/TPX All- American, as selected by College Baseball News, the nation s oldest national college baseball poll, since Smith was also selected a Preseason Third-Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association last week. La Salle junior closer PAT CHRISTENSEN was honored for the second straight season by the NCBWA and was named to the Stopper of the Year Watch List. Christensen was also named to the watch list twice last season, in the preseason and during the midseason. FORDHAMS HOULIHAN PARK The A-10 Baseball Championship will return to campus sites on a three-year rotation beginning in 2012 with Fordham University and Houlihan Park serving as host of the championship in year one. Charlotte will follow and serve as host in 2013, while Saint Louis University will welcome the Championship to its park in Houlihan Park has been the home for the Fordham baseball team since its most recent renovation in Then-named Jack Coffey Field, for the longtime Fordham baseball coach, the facility underwent a $4.3 million renovation, which included a new drainage system, a new FieldTurf surface, a new scoreboard and sound system, and lights. In addition, new bullpens, recessed dugouts, a 500-seat grandstand, a press box and a renovated entrance were also a part of the new look of the complex. The baseball field was renamed Houlihan Park, after Jim Houlihan 74 and his family pledged $1 million to Fordham University s baseball program. The donation supported Fordham baseball in its efforts to establish and sustain a national recruiting program, provide additional resources for team travel and supplement equipment purchases that exceed the annual budget. The Houlihan family has strong roots at Fordham. Jim Houlihan pitched for the Rams from 1971 to 1973, and his brother Jack Houlihan (CBA 75) was a catcher from 1972 to 1975, while six other members of the Houlihan extended family have attended Fordham. Houlihan Park s first full season of use was 2006, when the field played host to the A-10 Baseball Championship. It was the first time that the Championship returned to a campus site in its entirety since In that championship, Saint Louis garnered its first-ever Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship over St. Bonaventure. The Championship returns to Houlihan Park for a second time in Since its re-opening, Houlihan Park has served as a great home field advantage for the Rams, as Fordham has posted an record, winning 61% of its home games FINAL STANDINGS 1ST - CHARLOTTE A-10: 17-7/.708 ALL: 43-16/.729 2ND - RHODE ISLAND A-10: 17-7/.708 ALL: 43-16/.729 3RD - DAYTON A-10: 17-7/.708 ALL: 43-16/.729 4TH - XAVIER A-10: 17-7/.708 ALL: 43-16/.729 T-5TH - RICHMOND A-10: 17-7/.708 ALL: 43-16/.729 T-5TH - LA SALLE A-10: 17-7/.708 ALL: 43-16/.729 T-5TH - ST. 8 2012 ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE BASEBALL A-10 BASEBALL NEWS & NOTES CHARLOTTE PICKED TO REPEAT AS A-10 CHAMPS Defending champion Charlotte has been tabbed to claim its third-straight Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball title in 2012, according to a vote of the league s 13 head coaches. Rhode Island and Dayton round out the top three, respectively. Charlotte is in search of a fifth Atlantic 10 Conference title since joining the league six seasons ago. The 49ers welcome back 24 letterwinners, including 13 pitchers four starters and four starting position players from a team that finished last year and won its opening game over No. 19 Arkansas in the Tempe, Ariz. regional round of the NCAA Tournament. Charlotte is one of only seven teams in college baseball with a winning percentage better than 70 percent (70.1) over the last six seasons. The 49ers are also among just 14 teams with a Top 75 win percentage in each of the last six seasons. Redshirt senior starting pitcher Andrew Smith, a 2011 Third-Team All-American and reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, was recently selected to the 12th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) preseason All-America team and was named to the Louisville Slugger/ TPX preseason All-America third-team. Smith finished 10-4 for the 49ers in 2011, with a 1.81 ERA, second-lowest in program history for any Charlotte pitcher with more than 50 innings pitched. His ERA ranked him 25th in the country last season, tied for 24th in win total in Division I. He led the team with innings pitched and 92 strikeouts. Rhode Island earned its ninth-straight trip to the A-10 Championship last season and will seek the program s second league title and first since Last year s Conference Coach of the Year, Jim Foster returns for his seventh campaign in Kingston and welcomes back a trio of All-Conference selections in outfielder Greg Annarummo, shortstop Mike LeBel and designated hitter Jeff Cammans. Annarummo, the Rams lone first-team selection, posted a.341 average to go along with 59 hits - 17 of which were for extra bases - 34 runs and 34 RBI. He recorded 17 multiple-hit and 10 multiple-rbi games and finished the regular season ranked fourth in the conference with a.378 average in Atlantic 10 games. Dayton head coach Tony Vittorio, in his 13th season with the Flyers, returns a solid core of players that helped UD to a third-place conference finish in Two weekend starting pitchers and five starters from the field return, including the senior duo of Brian Blasik and C.J. Gillman. Gillman set two single-season marks in at-bats (241) and hits (91) last year, while Blasik tied the stolen bases milestone with 23 despite playing in just 44 of UD s 59 games. Blasik and Gillman, along with right-handed pitcher Burny Mitchem, who maintained a 2.07 ERA in 2011, will help the Flyers seek their second A-10 title since After spending the past five seasons at a neutral facility, the six-team, double-elimination A-10 Baseball Championship will return to campus in This year s event will be played May at Houlihan Park on the campus of Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y. The Championship game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network on Saturday, May 26 at ET. TEAM (2011 OVERALL/A-10 RECORD) - POINTS 1. Charlotte (43-16/17-7) points 2. Temple (24-29/4-20) - 27 points THIS IS THE A-10 On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The A-10, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s cross country, field hockey, men s golf, women s lacrosse, men s and women s indoor and outdoor track & field, women s rowing, men s and women s soccer, softball, men s and women s swimming & diving, men s and women s tennis, and women s volleyball. 9 2012 ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE BASEBALL AROUND THE HORN // A-10 BASEBALL TEAM NOTES CHARLOTTE Charlotte returns all but one pitcher, including all four main starters from last year s squad, which finished 10th in the nation with a team earned run average of The A-10 Pitcher of the Year, redshirt senior Andrew Smith, and Rookie of the Year, Tyler Barnette, return to anchor the rotation, which also includes junior Corey Roberts and senior Joe Yermal. The offense will be led at the top of the lineup by redshirt senior outfielder Shane Brown, and in the middle by senior catchers Ross Steedley and Miguel Rodriguez. Head coach Loren Hibbs begins his 20th season at the helm of the 49ers, looking to get Charlotte to its sixth NCAA Regional, fourth in the past six seasons. The 49ers have the nation s seventh-best winning percentage over the past six seasons, finishing eighth in win percentage after last season s mark. DAYTON Dayton features a solid core of returning players which helped the Flyers to a thirdplace conference finish in Two weekend starting pitchers and five starters from the field return as Head Coach Tony Vittorio and the Flyers seek their second A-10 title since Last season Dayton s pitching staff recorded the lowest earned-run-average of any Flyer team since The 3.94 team ERA was the fourth-best in program history and third-best in the A-10 in Senior Burny Mitchem anchors UD s pitching staff as the only Dayton pitcher since 1971 to hold a career ERA under 3.50 (3.41). Mitchem maintained a 2.07 ERA in 2011 second-best in the A-10 to earn first-team all-conference honors. The dynamic duo of Brian Blasik and C.J. Gillman return as seniors in The pair made their mark the Dayton record book last season as Gillman set two single-season marks in at-bats (241) and hits (91) while Blasik tied the stolen bases milestone with 23 despite playing in just 44 of UD s 59 games. Gillman wasn t far behind with 22 stolen bases as the pair guided Dayton to set a team stolen bases record of 121. The 2011 squad was the first Dayton team to record 100 stolen bases in a single season. FORDHAM Fordham will have a new look in 2012, as the team begins its first year under new head coach Kevin Leighton. Leighton spent the past six seasons on the other side of the Bronx at Manhattan College. Leighton inherits a team that just missed the A-10 Championship last season by one game, and has a good mix of youth, talent, and experience to make a run at the 2012 Championship, which will be held at Fordham s Houlihan Park in May. Among the returnees include senior captains Brian Kownacki, Ryan Maghini, and Jordan Grangard, as well as the sophomore pitching trio of Chris Pike, Tim Swatek, and Jonathan Reich, who were all selected as Freshman All-Americans in Kownacki and Maghini return for their final season on the left side of the infield, after starting all 55 games in 2011, where the duo combined for 60 runs scored, 48 RBI, and close to 30 stolen bases. Grangard looks to come back from injury, which cost him the entire 2011 campaign, and return to his 2010 form, when he led the Rams in ERA (1.74), appearances (22), saves (3), and opponent batting average (.185). 10 2012 ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE BASEBALL AROUND THE HORN // A-10 BASEBALL TEAM NOTES LA SALLE The Explorers, coming off a program-best 14 Atlantic 10 Conference victories, look to build off last season s success under reigning A-10 Coach of the Year Mike Lake. La Salle returns 17 lettermen from last year s squad that notched 22 victories, the team s highest win total in over a decade. Pitching will be the Explorers strength going into the 2011 season. The team returns an experienced starting pitching corps in senior Kevin Fuqua and juniors Kevin Christy, Eric Van Wyk and Cody Weiss. Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Pat Christensen, who notched a La Salle single-season record 11 saves last season, will resume his role as the closer. The Explorers will rely on the bats of juniors Brendan Norton, who led La Salle with a.400 batting average last season, Tony Negrin and Jon Gyles, who gave La Salle its best offensive production last season. MASSACHUSETTS Despite graduating its top three power hitters to graduation, UMass brings back five position starters and a group of eight sophomore position players, five of whom appeared in 20 or more games in After not returning a single member of its starting rotation for 2011, the Minutemen will have a host of experience on the mound in 2012, losing just one (Charlie Benson) to graduation, while returning 10 members of the 2011 pitching staff. UMass has added nine new arms, including eight true freshmen. After missing all of 2011 due to injury, 2010 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection Ryan Cusick is back with the team for The Minutemen also have Dylan Begin and Adam Picard returning, both of whom showed promise as freshmen before going down with season-ending injuries last spring. Head coach Mike Stone is entering his 25th season at the helm for the Minutemen and is three wins shy of his 600th at UMass, currently through 24 seasons. RHODE ISLAND On the mound, 2011 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Jim Foster welcomes back a pair of weekend starters in southpaws Anthony Pisani and Chris Pickering. The Rhode Island baseball team has been picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 this coming season, in voting conducted by the league s head coaches. The Rams return four All-Conference players from last year s club in Greg Annarummo (First Team), Jeff Cammans (Second Team), Mike LeBel (Second Team) and Jeff Roy (All-Rookie). For the second time in the last three years, URI has had the best RPI in the Atlantic 10, checking in at #70 in 2011 and #55 in Since Jim Foster became head coach in 2006, Rhody has had the league s best RPI three times (2011, 2009, 2006). The other three seasons (2010, 2008, 2007), Charlotte was the conference s top team. RICHMOND Fourth-year head coach Mark McQueen welcomes back seven starting position players and two starting pitchers from a 2010 team that was hit hard by the injury bug. The Spiders limped their way through a difficult schedule that featured seven NCAA Regional teams from the prior year and finished overall with 21 games decided by two runs or less. Headlining the list of returning starters is senior slugger Billy Barber, who batted a team-leading.372 last season with 11 home runs, 49 RBI and 17 stolen bases en route to Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors and a spot on the 2010 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year watch list. Senior Mike Mergenthaler returns for his final season after hitting.307 last year with 12 homers, 12 doubles, 45 RBI and 12 steals. He is slated to start in right field, after patrolling first base for much of his career. Richmond s incoming class is highlighted by 6-foot-5 LHP Chris Bates (Ossining, N.Y.), who was drafted in the 15th-round by Milwaukee of the 2010 Major League Draft but did not sign. The class also includes a local product INF Nick Poulos, and a transfer LHP Bret Williams. Poulos was the District Player of the Year out of Douglas Freeman High, while Williams is a 6-foot-4 southpaw that posted six wins and a 2.90 ERA last year at Patrick Henry CC. ST. BONAVENTURE St. Bonaventure did not qualify for the conference tournament due to a tie breaker with Richmond and LaSalle. Jason Radwan, a second team All-Conference pick last season,s returns for the Bonnies this season after hitting a league best.324 amongst second basemen. He led SBU in homers (5) and total bases. Eddie Gray anchored the pitching staff with 80 innings last year, and finished first on the team in wins (6) tying him for sixth on the single-season program record list in that category. He also ranked first on the team with 57 K s, 2nd on the team in ERA 3.47 and 3rd in opponent batting average (.288) SAINT JOSEPH S Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honoree Greg Kumpel headlines the returnees to the SJU offense for the new campaign. Kumpel, a junior outfielder, led the team in batting average, hits, runs scored, doubles, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage last season and will look to build on his breakout sophomore season in Providing power in the middle of the lineup will be senior first baseman Kevin Taylor. Taylor led the squad in home runs each of the last two seasons and will have a chance to crack the program s all-time top 10 in that category in his final year on Hawk Hill. Junior righthander Kyle Mullen is the unquestioned ace of the SJU pitching staff, coming in off of a season in which he tossed a pair of complete game shutouts, including a 9-0 blanking of defending league champion Saint Louis to open conference play. SJU will also count on graduate student Alex Pracher, sophomores Daniel Thorpe and Brett Koliani, and freshman Tim Ponto (a 2011 draftee of the Philadelphia Phillies) to help fill the void left by the departure of Ryan Kemp and A.J. Holland to the professional ranks (both were drafted in 2011 as well). The Hawks will no longer be nomads in 2012 as varsity baseball will return to Hawk Hill for the first time since Saint Joseph s will open its brand new turf field on the Maguire Campus on March 9, hosting Iona. SAINT LOUIS The Billikens return all of their starters from a pitching staff that finished with a 3.97 team ERA, the secondbest mark in Saint Louis history. Among the returners are junior RHP Alex Alemann (3.05 ERA, eighth in A-10), sophomore LHP Damian Rivera (2011 Texas Collegiate League Pitcher of the Year) and senior RHP Zack Smith

11 2012 ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE BASEBALL (team-high six wins in 2011). Senior RHP Travis Parker notched 10 saves in 2011, a record at Saint Louis. His 10 saves were more than any other team total in school history. He was brought in to close out 19 games, making him the second most used closer in the A-10. Last season, Saint Louis turned 63 double plays, the most in the conference. Junior 2B/SS Mike Levine was part of 46 double plays, the third-highest total for an A-10 individual. Departed senior Jon Myers was part of 47 double plays, finishing second in the conference. In 2011, the Billikens drew 224 walks, third-most in the conference. Junior OF/DH Steve Fernandez led the team with 27 free passes and a.447 on-base percentage. In addition to Fernandez, departed Bills Jon Myers, Nick Becker, Cody Cotter and Zach Miller all drew 20-plus walks. Junior 2B/SS Mike Levine has only been a Billiken for two years, but is already one of the best defensive players in school history. As a freshman, set a school record for assists with 187. Last season, gathered 164 assists, fourth most in the A-10. His total of 351 assists puts him at tenth in the SLU all-time record book. The Billikens have scheduled national powers in for the 2012 slate. In the prestigious Coca-Cola Classic, Saint Louis will take on Arizona State and Oregon State. Both teams finished 2011 in the national top 10 according to Baseball America. Additionally, Belmont and Missouri State were in the top 60 in the NCAA ratings percentage index at the conclusion of last season. TEMPLE Former Richmond assistant coach Ryan Wheeler takes over as head coach. Owls finished the 2011 season with the nation s fifth-highest batting average (.319) Third baseman and pitcher Steve Nikorak returns after being named Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Year and to the American baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region team. Will Remillard returns for his sophomore year after being named Big 5 Rookie of the Year captains are Steve Nikorak, Jabair Khan and Dan Moller XAVIER Last year XU marked its fifth-straight 20-win season and its second 30-win season in three years with a record in The Musketeers also made their sixth-straight appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Despite losing Xavier s all-time home run king, Ben Thomas, the Musketeers look to be a force in the conference with a strong returning corps. XU returns all three of its starting pitchers including 2011 All-Rookie selection sophomore Vinny Nittoli and left-handed hurling junior Jon Richard First Team selection junior Seth Willoughby will provide the Musketeers with a strong bat and solid pitching in relief. Sophomore outfielder Brian Bruening will be back in action after being named a 2011 A-10 All-Rookie selection. The 2012 schedule is going to test the Musketeers right out of the gate as XU opens play at nationally-ranked North Carolina with a three-game series beginning Feb. 17 in Chapel Hill. Kentucky, Northwestern, Pitt, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana and local rivals Cincinnati and Miami (Ohio) will all test XU in the non-conference slate.
