Brokaw) This collection emerges out of a seminar led by Margreta de Grazia and Brian Cummings at the Shakespeare Association of America in At their invitation, we have organized twelve essays that interrogate narratives of secularization put forth by Weber, Foucault, Schmitt, Taylor, and others in the context of Shakespeare s plays. Confirmed contributors include: Kent Cartwright, Alice Dailey, Tobias Doring, Helga Duncan, Lowell Gallagher, James Kearney, Erin Kelly, Jennifer Rust, and Will West, along with our cowritten introduction. The proposal is under review at Fordham University Press. Book: Shakespeare s Failed Speech This book examines the relation of Shakespearean drama to humanist education, with a focus on how the plays and poems explore how words fail those who write or speak them. I argue that Shakespeare, a product of a grammar school education, made space in his plays to mock the pedagogical models he inherited, elicit the dangerous agency of words, and expose those moments at which tropes and figures do not offer a local habitation and a name. Chapters address the futility of verbal fullness in King Lear and the sonnets; poisoned words in Othello; pedants and pedagogues in The Taming of the Shrew and Love s Labour s Lost; bad oaths and broken bonds in All s Well That Ends Well and The Merchant of Venice; and tragic letters in Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night.
