5 COACHING STAFF Dan Colella Head Coach 7th Season at Duke University of the South 84 Entering his seventh year with the program, head coach Dan Colella has helped the Duke men s and women s swimming and diving squads make great strides in each of his six years at Duke. The season boasted a handful of program firsts for both the Duke swimmers and divers, as well as Colella. The men s and women s teams each broke into the top-20 nationally at the 2011 NCAA Championships, with the Blue Devil women surmounting a 19th-place finish overall to break into the top 20 for the first time in program history. In addition, Duke had five student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships, marking the highest total in program history. Sophomore diver Nick McCrory collected his second consecutive national title on the platform, breaking his previously-set record with a new championships score of Junior diver Abby Johnston earned the first national title for the women s program on the three-meter springboard, while also taking fifth on the one-meter board. In the pool, senior All-America swimmer Ashley Twichell posted the best finish of her collegiate career, placing fifth in the women s 1,650 freestyle with a time of 15: Fellow senior Nick Garvy turned in a school record-breaking performance in the 100 fly, finishing 23rd overall in The Blue Devils also saw unparalleled success at the 2011 ACC Championships, with the men s team breaking into the top five overall and setting 15 new program records. Duke s 200 free relay of Ben Hwang, Spencer Booth, Ben Tuben and Nick Garvy shattered the Duke record with a mark of 1:18.52 and collected a gold medal at the conference meet, another first for the program. Garvy took home All-ACC honors in the 100 fly, finishing third in 46.94, while McCrory captured ACC titles in the one-meter and three-meter events and earned ACC Diver of the Year honors. On the women s side, the Blue Devils finished seventh as a team while breaking 12 program records. Twichell claimed her second ACC title in the 1,650 free and established three new school records. Johnston defended her one-meter and three-meter titles to garner ACC Diver of the Year honors, while freshman Haley Ishimatsu earned the ACC title in platform diving. Throughout the course of the season, the Duke men broke 21 records, including 16 school and five pool records, while the women boasted an incredible 18 records broken (12 school, six pool). During the season, both the Duke men and women placed seventh overall the ACC standings and sixth at the ACC Championships. The men s team shattered the record books again, rewriting nine school records and three pool records. Among those, five of these records came during the ACC Championships and one, set by diver Nick McCrory, was broken at the 2010 NCAA Championships. In a standout freshman campaign, McCrory set every Duke record for one-meter, three-meter and platform diving, including bringing home an NCAA Championship in platform diving with a record score of 534. On the women s side, the Blue Devils broke three school records and one pool record. Colella led the women to an impressive 6-5 finish for the season, qualifying two individuals for the NCAAs, in addition to one qualifier on the men s side. At the NCAAs, Johnston took fourth in the one-meter dive while Twichell broke her own record by finishing 14th in the 1,650 free. In , the Duke men accrued an overall record of 6-3 (2-3 ACC) and took seventh place at the ACC Championships, doubling the previous year s win total. The Blue Devil men also shattered the previous standard in 18 of a total 22 events. Colella led the women s team to a mark of 7-4 (3-3 ACC) on the season and a sixth-place showing at the conference championships. Keeping pace with the men, the women posted 17 school records of their own, including bests in all four relays. Twichell returned to the NCAA Championships for her second year in a row, accompanied by freshman diving standout Abby Johnston. Johnston dove to a fifth place finish in the nation, earning All-America honors for herself and single-handedly providing Duke with its best team finish in program history. The swimming and diving campaign saw the men s squad finish 3-7 overall and take ninth at the ACC championships. The Colella-led squad set eight school records on the men s side during the year, four coming in individual events and four in relays. The women s team finished 8-4, taking sixth at the conference meet. The Blue Devil women set 12 school records, while two individuals - Twichell and Shannon Beall - recorded Olympic trial cuts and competed in the 2008 trials in Omaha, Neb. Twichell was an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships as she posted the necessary A cut in the 1650 free, making her the first Duke athlete to advance to the national meet since She took 16th in the event, earning All-America honors, the first since Olympian Nancy Hogshead in In , the Blue Devil men compiled a record of 4-5 (1-4 ACC), notching one more win than in the previous campaign, while the women s squad went 5-4 (1-4 ACC) on the year, securing a winning record and posting five victories for the second straight season. At the 2007 ACC Championships, the Duke men placed ninth while the women took eighth place, two places higher than the squad s finish in Then freshman Beall placed seventh in the 100 butterfly finals, while senior Jackie Rodriguez notched an NCAA B standard in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries and went on to place seventh in the final race. Colella s first season at Duke saw the men s team match its win total from and the women s team nearly double its previous season s total. Both the men and the women posted an ACC dual meet victory for the first time in seven and 12 years, respectively. The men finished the season with a 3-6 (1-4 ACC) record, while the women finished the season at 5-6 (1-5 ACC). At the ACC Championships, the Duke women s team established three school records and the men threw out two records. Senior Katie Ness earned All-ACC honors at the event while notching four NCAA B standard times as her team claimed the ACC Sportsmanship Award. Ness was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III list. Colella came to Duke after a successful 12-year tenure as the head coach of the women s swimming program at the University of Tennessee. Ten of Colella s 12 teams at Tennessee finished in the nation s top 25, including the team that tied for 24th. At the 2005 NCAA Championships, his team garnered 11 All-America honors and broke five school records. Colella has coached 34 student-athletes to a total of 143 All-America honors and 18 of his student-athletes earned Southeastern Conference titles. In just his third year of serving as the head coach at Tennessee, Colella guided one of the school s most successful teams to a top-10 showing at the NCAA Championships. Along the way, Colella s student-athletes notched 30 All-America nods and Nicole deman won the school s first NCAA individual championship in the 50 free. Colella s coaching accomplishments have not been limited to the collegiate level, as he has tutored athletes who have competed in the Olympic Games, Olympic Trials, Pan American Games, Pan Pacific Games, World Championships and World University Games. Three of his swimmers made appearances at the 2004 Olympic Trials, and former Tennessee swimmer Fabiola Molina represented Brazil at the 2000 Olympics. Colella arrived at Tennessee in 1990 as the assistant women s swimming coach and served in that capacity until being promoted to head coach in From he was the assistant swimming coach at Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Fla., where he helped guide his team to four NJCAA men s and women s championships. Colella earned a bachelor s degree in natural resource management and geology from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., in In addition to being a member of the Order of the Gownsmen, an academic honor society, and Beta Theta Pi, Colella was a member of the school s swimming team. He served as captain for two years and earned three accolades as the team s MVP from Colella earned two Southern College Athletic Conference titles by winning the 100 and 200 backstroke in Over the course of his collegiate career, he never fell below seventh place in the conference in any individual event. Specializing in butterfly and the IM events, Colella was the university s all-time leading scorer in championship meets when he graduated. Colella and his wife, Victoria, have four children - Henry, George, Ellinor, and Caroline - and reside in Chapel Hill, N.C

6 COACHING STAFF Drew Johansen Head Diving Coach 5th Season at Duke Rochville 05 U.S. Elite Diving Academy founder and National Team coach Drew Johansen is now in his fifth season as the Blue Devils diving coach. In only his fourth year with the Blue Devil program, Johansen saw a record five divers qualify for NCAA Zones and sent three divers to the 2011 NCAA Championships, with two divers collecting national titles. Junior Abby Johnston won her first title on the three-meter, in addition to posting a fifth-place showing on the one-meter, to collect All-America honors once again. After rewriting the record book last season, sophomore Nick McCrory did not disappoint. The defending national champion once again captured the national title on the platform, setting the NCAA record for the second consecutive year. McCrory had two dives that scored over 100 points apiece to garner All-America honors for the second-straight year. In addition, the sophomore standout placed fourth in both the one- and three-meter springboard events. Johnston and McCrory also collected the ACC s Most Valuable Diver and Diver of the Year honors for the second-straight year. A new addition to the roster, the Blue Devils picked up freshman platform competitor Haley Ishimatsu, who made her international debut at age 13. Ishimatsu had a banner year, breaking the Duke record on the platform during the ACC s. In her first showing at the NCAA Championships, the former U.S. Olympian recorded an 11th-place finish on the platform. Both Johnston and McCrory will redshirt the season to compete internationally with the hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in London, England. Over the summer, Johansen served as the head coach of USA Diving s 2011 World Championships team in Shanghai, China. He guided McCrory to a sixth-place performance on the platform, as well as a fifth-place finish in the men s synchronized 10-meter event, along with David Boudia of Purdue. Also under Johansen s tutelage, Johnston finished sixth in the women s one-meter springboard competition. Johansen made yet another incredible stride during the season. In just three years with the program, he had four divers qualify for the NCAA Zones, but more impressively, had two divers place in the NCAA Championships. Arguably, his greatest accomplishment came this season with the addition of freshman standout McCrory. McCrory demolished the record book, setting every men s record for both the pool and school. More incredibly, he was the NCAA Champion in platform diving, while also placing second in the three-meter and fourth in the one-meter events. During the season, a total of five men and women four of them freshmen qualified for the NCAA Zones Diving Championships. The standing school records in four of six total diving events were broken and re-broken over the course of the year. Johnasen also directed freshman Johnston to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, where she garnered All-America honors on the three-meter board. During the campaign, Johansen s first at Duke, diver Julie Brummond received All-ACC honors for her performance on the three-meter board at the 2008 ACC Championships. She reached the finals on both springboards and on the platform at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships under Johansen s leadership. A former member of the U.S. Diving National Team, Johansen brings a wealth of skills to the Duke program as he has had a variety of experience at the club, collegiate and national levels. He has served as a U.S. National Team coach for six years and also coached the U.S. Diving World Championship team in 2005 and U.S. Diving Junior World Team in He founded the U.S. Elite Diving Academy in Columbus, Ohio, in 2001, and it quickly developed into the nation s top junior and senior program, winning the U.S. Diving Junior Team title in 2005 and Senior Team title in Johansen s NCAA experience includes head coaching stints at Illinois State University and Florida Atlantic University, as he received conference coach of the year accolades four times at FAU. During the campaign at FAU, Johansen coached four All-America selections, three honorable mention All- America picks and a three-meter national champion. He has also served as a volunteer assistant at Ohio State University. Johansen has received numerous coaching accolades, as he was the recipient of the USA Diving Award of Excellence and was named USA Diving Coach of the Year in Other career accolades include Junior Coach of the Year (2002 and 2004) and U.S. Olympic Committee Finalist Developmental Coach of the Year (2004). The Florida native received his bachelor s degree in physical education from Rochville University in Johansen resides in Durham

7 COACHING STAFF Dawn Kane Assistant Coach 7th Season at Duke Brown 02 Dan Carrington Assistant Coach 1st Season at Duke Ball State 02 Dawn Kane joined the Duke swimming and diving staff in as an assistant swimming coach and has played an integral role in the development of the program, as the Blue Devil swimming and diving squads continue to become a force to reckon with between the lanes and on the boards. Kane s first season saw the men s team finish with a record of 3-6 (1-4 ACC) and the women s team finish with a record of 5-6 (1-5 ACC), with each team posting an ACC dual-meet victory for the first time in a number of years at the same meet in Maryland. Kane saw Katie Ness earn All-ACC honors, in addition to being named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III. The teams have each seen consistent improvement since then, with the squads posting a total of 35 school records and an ACC Champion, and a squad posting 16 new school records, and a swimmer who placed 14th in the NCAA Championships. During the season, Kane witnessed numerous program firsts. Both the men s and women s quads placed in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships, with the men breaking into the top five in the ACC, a goal the team had set since the arrival of head coach Dan Colella. The team set 39 new records, totaled five ACC champions and had two swimmers and three divers qualify for the NCAA Championships. A 2002 graduate of Brown University and eight-year member of the Jamaican National Swimming Squad, Kane brought extensive international and collegiate swimming experience to the Duke team. She is a two-time participant in the Olympic Games, having represented Jamaica in 2000 and 2004, and has earned medals in the Carifta Games, Caribbean Island Swimming Championships, Centro Americano y del Caribe Nataciones and Caribbean and Central American Games. Kane also represented Jamaica at the Pan American Games in 1999 (Winnipeg) and 2003 (Santo Domingo), as well as the Commonwealth Games in 2002 (Manchester) and added even more international experience to her resume when she coached the Jamaican National team at the 2007 World Championship meet in Melbourne, Australia. Kane graduated in 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Brown, where she was team captain of the swim team her senior year and is still in the record books for being a member of the 400 free and 800 free relay teams that set school records in She was the Ivy League Champion in the 200 free in 2001 and the 100 free in 2002, and participated in the 2002 NCAA Championships. Kane went on to earn a masters degree in Human Performance at the University of Florida in While in Gainesville, she worked as a swim instructor for Swim America of Gainesville and the Gator Swim Club. Kane and her husband, Lee, reside in Durham. Dan Carrington returns to the Blue Devil coaching staff in as an assistant coach after previously serving as an assistant during the season. Carrington comes to Duke from Southwestern University, where he was the head coach from At NCAA Div. III Southwestern, Carrington tutored the first swimming All- American in program history in the 100 backstroke. In his first year, he helped two individuals achieve NCAA B cuts in two events and saw his athletes set five school records. Carrington coached the women s team to a sixth-place finish at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, moving up two spots from the previous year. Under Carrington s direction, the Pirates also broke nine program records and had one individual achieve an NCAA A cut in the 100 backstroke and another make the NCAA B cut in the 200 backstroke. Prior to coaching at Southwestern, Carrington served as the head coach for USA Swimming s San Antonio Wave in San Antonio, Texas. As head coach, he helped the program grow to 150 swimmers while guiding his athletes to success at the Texas Age Groups Championship and Southern Sectional meets. Carrington was an assistant coach with the Blue Devil swimming and diving program in , and during that time also served as the head coach for Blue Devil Aquatics. In one year as head coach, Carrington saw six individuals qualify for their first ever North Carolina Senior Championship meet and placed one swimmer in the top eight in the Eastern Section of the Southern Zone Age Group Championship meet. He also spent two years as the Durham site coach at the YMCA of the Triangle Area. Prior to that, Carrington was an assistant coach at Yorktown High School and Delta High School in Indiana. Carrington graduated from Ball State University in 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He also swam for the Cardinals for two seasons. A native of Danville, Ind., Carrington is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA). He and his wife, Kim, have two children Grace (3) and Liana (1). The family resides in Durham
