1 Wrestling DIVISION III Highlights Emotion swings high in title matches; Wartburg repeats as team champion: Electrifying competition brought fans out of their seats during the March 10 final session of the 2012 Division III Wrestling Championships at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wis. Wartburg won four individual titles and took the team title in dominating fashion, scoring 141½ points, 55 points ahead of runner-up Augsburg. Wartburg junior Kodie Silvestri broke the hearts of hometown Wisconsin-La Crosse fans when he upset defending champion Bebeto Yewah in the 141-pound final. Silvestri matched Yewah in strength, speed and athleticism, fending off the senior for an 11-9 victory. Wartburg emphasizes that you have to fight somebody to win the tournaments out there, and that s what made (me a champion), said Silvestri, who was named the meet s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Sophomore Kenneth Anderson, Silvestri s roommate, opened the championship round with a 5-2 victory against top-ranked Nathan Fitzenreider of North Central (Illinois) at 125 pounds. To see him win the national title, that just riled me up a little bit and got me jacked up. It was his turn and then this was my turn to do the same thing. Now we get to share that when we get back to Wartburg. Wartburg s Byron Tate joined an elite club as he became the 12th wrestler in Division III history to win three consecutive titles. He won all three at 197 pounds, the only wrestler to reach the mark at that weight. It was the third consecutive year a Division III wrestler won his third title. Landon Williams also earned first for Wartburg in the 165-pound class, shutting out his first three opponents before edging Nick LeClere of Coe in the final, 7-4. The Knights four individual championships matched the Division III record, a feat accomplished six previous times, most recently by Augsburg in This group has knocked down every single thing we ve put in front of them, Wartburg coach Jim Miller said. From National Duals to the conference title to the national championship, it s really surprised me in a positive, gratifying way the way this group s come together, bought into everything we ve done and asked them to do. And they ve just grown, week by week, and it s really pleasing to be part of! Two other wrestlers joined Tate in reaching the finals for the third consecutive year. Ithaca senior Jeremy Stierly, who missed half the season with an injury, won the 149-pound title, his first after a pair of runner-up finishes. Augsburg s Orlando Ponce was not as fortunate, as he was the runner-up for the third consecutive year, this time at 157 pounds. Ponce is only the fourth wrestler in Division III annals to be in the title match three years in a row and fail to win a title.
