1 From the Principal s Desk Dear Parents and Guardians Welcome to Week 5 Week 5, Term 1 3 March 2017 IMPORTANT DATES Fra Robert Zivkovic OSM We were saddened this week to hear of the passing of Servite Friar Robert Zivovic. Fr Z, as he was affectionately known made a significant impact to our College for many years. He arrived in Australia from Denver Colorado in 1967 and served at Servite College in a range of different capacities up until Fr Z taught History and Religious Education during the early years at Servite and always had a great love of sport. Fr Z also fulfilled the role of Chaplain at the school and positively influenced the lives of many through his generous, gentle, inclusive and caring manner. We offer our heartfelt condolences to our Servite Friars on the loss of Fra Robert. The thoughts and prayers of our entire Servite community are with them at this time. The Servite Friars would like to inform the community that a Vigil Service and Rosary for Fra Robert will be held at the St Denis Parish Church, Joondanna on Monday 6 March commencing at 7.00pm. The Funeral Mass in celebration of the life of Fra Robert will then be held at the St Denis Parish Church on Tuesday 7 March at 10.00am. At 12noon, a graveside service will be held at the Pinnaroo Cemetery with light refreshments being offered afterward in the Pinnaroo Cemetery lounge area. Monday 6 March Public Holiday Tuesday 7 March - Friday 10 March OLNA Testing commences Tuesday 7 March NAS Round 3 Friday 10 March Swim Team Camp Monday 13 March NAS Bye (all week) Friday 24 March College Open Day Please do not hesitate to contact the College should you require any further information. Parent Connect We would like to acknowledge the parents who attended the first instalment of our Parent Connect programme this week at the College. The programme is designed to support parent engagement in the learning journey of their children. Parents heard from key staff members including Ms Roseanne Madden, Mrs Franca Coutts, Mr Trevor Galbraith and Mr James Maitland on strategies that can be implemented to support the safety of students when they are online. We appreciated the input from parents present to help us to shape upcoming Connect session to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our community. We strongly encourage parents to engage in this programme which will run at various times over the course of the year. The next Parent Connect session is scheduled for Thursday 23 March commencing at 3.30pm in the Alexis Research Centre. Click here to book. 4 Parent Survey As mentioned last week, the College is keen to gather parent feedback around a number of key areas, including our Master Plan, to support the ongoing development of our school and also to ensure the continued engagement of our families. Click here to complete the survey. We look forward to your input. Local Catholic Primary School Visits This week Mrs Franca Coutts and I had the great privilege of visiting a number of the Local Catholic Primary Schools as part of our 2018/19 enrolment process. We thank Mr John Rose, Principal St Lawrence Primary School; Mr Eugene Lee, Principal St Denis School; and Mr Mark Ryan, Acting Principal Our Lady of Lourdes School, for their terrific support of our visits. All of the students we met were keenly interested in what is happening at Servite. Each group was a credit to their own school for the wonderful way that they warmly welcomed us into their community and engaged in the conversation. We look forward to visiting a number of other primary schools in the upcoming weeks. College Open Day As has been widely promoted, our Annual College Open Day is scheduled for Friday 24 March commencing at 9.30am. We look forward to welcoming current and prospective families into our community. Enrolment Interviews Continue Enrolment interviews continued this week for students entering the College next year and in A reminder to prospective and existing families with siblings to please make certain that they have applications submitted to ensure they don t miss out on the opportunity for their sons and daughters to attend Servite. Please find a copy of the Archbishop s letter included in this edition of iservi. Best wishes and every blessing Mr Jeff Allen Principal

9 Year 10 Humanities World War 2 Excursion On a very hot Friday 24 February the Year 10 students attended an excursion to the Fremantle Army Museum and the Leighton Battery/World War 2 Tunnels. Whilst visiting the Army Museum our students were shocked by the appalling conditions they saw our soldiers facing in the Asian POW exhibits and how these men fought disease, malnutrition and brutality on a daily basis. We also took the time to look at the exhibits of other major conflicts involving Australians such as World War 1, Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan. The second part of our adventure saw us travel to the Leighton Battery and WW2 Tunnels where we were able to view the Fremantle Port defense systems. We looked at the anti-aircraft guns that fortunately were never fired in anger before heading into the tight underground tunnels and exploring the conditions these brave men and women worked in while keeping a keen watch on our shoreline. Mr Andrew Doyle Head of Learning Area - Humanities Servite College Parents and Friends As we farewell a valued member of our Executive Team, Assunta Patorniti, we warmly welcome Maria Carlino who has taken on the role of Secretary. Together with the wonderful Margaret Diodato, Vice President and Antonietta Acciari, Treasurer, we will continue to work closely with parents, staff and students to assist the College in meeting future goals. P&F Meeting 7.00pm Monday 13 March Our next meeting will include the opportunity for parents to give their feedback on the school s campus master plan, so please come along and join in discussions or be informed about the exciting times ahead at Servite College. Mrs Tania Cleverly President - Servite College Parents & Friends
