2 FOLLOW PATRIOT LEAGUE ON SOCIAL MEDIA FACEBOOK facebook.com/patriotleague #PLWGOLF INSTAGRAM PatriotLeague SNAPCHAT patriotleague The Patriot League Network, powered by Campus Insiders, streams more than 1,000 live events per year, including coverage of more than 10 Patriot League Championships. Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders The Patriot League continually demonstrates that student-athletes can excel at both academics and athletics without sacrificing its high standards. The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating student-athletes that are academically representative of their class. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a wellrounded education PATRIOT LEAGUE ATHLETICS & ACADEMIC SUCCESS Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army West Point,,, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the academic year, Patriot League studentathletes and teams accomplished the following: *88 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 76 squads earning perfect scores. *The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, and matched the Ivy League for the highest percentage of teams earning the honor at 45 percent. *89 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score in the multi-year rate. *12 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for s Matt DelMauro (Football) and s Ellen Bradford (Women s Swimming and Diving) and Rebecca Greenberg (Women s Rowing). *Three Patriot League student-athletes earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, with the group including Bradford and Sam Peckham (Men s Cross Country) from and Veronica Toro (Women s Rowing) from MIT. *Bradford and Loyola s Franz Rassman (Men s Basketball) were named the Corvias Patriot League Female and Male Scholar- Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively. *43 Patriot League student-athletes received Capital One/Co- SIDA Academic All-District recognition, an increase of nine honorees over last season. *There were 2,816 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in , including 258 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0. * s Jesse Klug (Men s Soccer) and American s Emilie Ikeda (Field Hockey) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character. * s Emily Tillo (Women s Golf) and s Patrick Keena (Men s Lacrosse) were named the League s Sportsmanship Award winners. *Tillo was also one of the League s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with American s Monika Smidova (Volleyball), with Tillo being recognized as an NCAA 2016 Woman of the Year Top 30. *Klug was one four Patriot League finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, along with Army West Point s Katie Holder (Women s Soccer), Kelsey Minato (Women s Basketball) and Kasey Mc- Cravey (Softball). * won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents Cup for the third straight time and fourth in the last five years. The Mids also won the men s title while claimed the women s crown. *Loyola men s lacrosse became the third Patriot League team in any sport to advance to the semifinals of an NCAA Championship as the Greyhounds defeated Duke and Towson in their tournament play. * beat Yale in the first round of the NCAA Men s Lacrosse Tournament as two Patriot League squads won games in the same year for the first time. *Colgate advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Football Championship, defeating New Hampshire and James Madison on the road in the postseason to become just the second football team in Patriot League history to win more than one game in the playoffs. *Also winning NCAA Tournament contests in were American volleyball, women s soccer, Holy Cross men s basketball, baseball and field hockey, with the 10 postseason victories setting a record for the Patriot League in a single season. *Fordham running back Chase Edmonds was named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year while Lehigh running back Dom Bragalone took home the organization s Rookie of the Year honor. *Army West Point s Kelsey Minato broke the Patriot League s All-Time scoring record and was named the ESPNW Mid-Major Player of the Year. Minato and Lehigh s Tim Kempton were both named Associated Press All-America honorable mention. Kempton earned the accolade for the second-consecutive year. *Twenty-three Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans, with first-team status for s Sofi Laurito (Field Hockey), Fordham s Chase Edmonds and Stephen Hodge (Football) and s Jay Stell (Men s Outdoor Track and Field). *Six Patriot Leaguers were selected in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft, while five were taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft. 3 saucon valley country club - grace course Soon after World War II it was decided that one 18-hole golf course was not sufficient for Saucon Valley s growing membership. Golf course architect William Gordon, who had worked with Toomey and Flynn (Shinnecock Hills) and constructed courses for Donald Ross (Seminole), Willie Park, Jr. (Maidstone) and Devereux Emmet (Garden City Golf Club), was chosen to create the additional course. The course was named for Eugene Gifford Grace, the man who founded the club and for more than four decades exerted a very strong influence on making Saucon Valley Country Club what it is today. Grace was an 1899 graduate of who went straight from the campus to the Steel, as Bethlehem Steel Corporation is commonly known. In 1913, at age 36, Eugene Grace was named president of Bethlehem Steel Company and three years later was elected president of the parent company, Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He spent forty years as president and chairman before stepping down in He died in 1960 at the age of 83. He was a giant of industry and a true friend of golf. It seems only fitting that this breathtakingly beautiful 18 holes of golf be named after this true visionary. The Grace Course is one of only 44 golf courses in the country to have been named to Golf Digest s prestigious Top 100 Golf Courses every year since the inception of the rankings in 1966 until the late 1990s. Considering the great many outstanding courses that have been built in the past decade, this is no small feat. The Grace Course, long and demanding, is set among 150 acres that challenge the golfer to use every club in the bag. It is quite unlike the Old Course in both design and topography. The Grace Course surrounds the Old Course and does not return to the clubhouse at the ninth hole. It does stop at the quaint Villa Pazzetti, the club s beautiful halfway house. The course measures 7,051 yards from the championship tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours. William Gordon and his son, David, completed the first nine, or third nine, of the Grace Course in the fall of The back nine, or fourth nine, opened for play in There are a number of quite unique holes on the Grace Course. The par three fifth hole is a classic example of an Eden hole and is modeled after the famous 11th hole at St. Andrews, Scotland. The par three 11th hole is a marvelous rendition of a Redan hole that features a slightly uphill shot to a green that is set at an angle to the tee and slopes gently away from the golfer. The Grace Course finishes with three very strong par four holes, the shortest of which is the 437-yard 17th. These holes provide a fitting climax to a true test of one s abilities.
