The purpose of these meetings is to discuss the student s college options and to understand the college application process. Please Ms. Burns at cburns@lasalleinstitute.org or call her at to schedule an appointment. Mr. Crandall will be available before and during the school day with the last appointment scheduled for 1:30 pm. A parent questionnaire will be mailed out to parents after an appointment is scheduled. It is important to have the questionnaire filled out when you bring it to the meeting. Your son should be present at the meeting, please have your son inform his teacher prior to the scheduled time if he will be missing class. REMINDER for Students in the Hudson Valley Community College - College in the High School Program Information Regarding College Transcripts If you are taking a class here at La Salle through the High School Program on the campus of Hudson Valley or another institution, it is important for you to remember that the college owns the transcripts, not La Salle Institute. Any time a college requests an official copy of a transcript you must obtain that through the registrar s office at that college and generally there is a fee attached. It sometimes gets confusing because your son is in class here but you are paying HVCC for those classes, not us. Please contact the registrar s office at HVCC for an official copy of your transcript.

4 POLICY ON VISITING COLLEGES Each Senior is allowed up to three (3) excused absences in order to visit colleges, go on interviews, etc. Procedure: You must bring in a signed note from home at least one day before the absence. This note must be approved by Colonel Raczkowski and by Mr. Crandall. (PLEASE NOTE: Although these three days are excused, they will still be noted as absences.) Money for College: FAFSA Dos and Don'ts How many of your students are missing an opportunity to get money for college? If they don t complete the FAFSA, they won t qualify for student financial aid. 5 Prospective Educator Scholarships The PDK Educational Foundation awards more than 30 scholarships each year to prospective educators, with awards ranging from $500 to $2000. These scholarships are funded through the generosity of donors. PDK uses one application for all Prospective Educator Scholarships. 7 The Hudson Mohawk Area Health Education Center, known as HM-AHEC Health Career Scholarship Good day! The Hudson Mohawk Area Health Education Center, known as HM-AHEC, will be awarding up to ten (10) scholarships for $500 each to high school seniors entering an approved healthcare related program at a local community college and/or a certification program. Applicants must be a graduating senior from a high school within the HM-AHEC ten-county service region, which includes: Albany, Essex, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington counties. Recipients are expected to participate in at least one informative two-hour health careers exploration program and be able to help present it at local a high school after successfully completing their certificate program or freshman year of college. Students may be eligible to re-apply in a subsequent year, which is to be based on performance and funding. All applications must be returned no later than 12:00 noon, on Monday, April 2nd, Visit: Zonta International District 2 Jean M. Coon Humanitarian Award Who was Jean M. Coon? Jean McCoy Coon was educated in the Syracuse New York area. A graduate of Syracuse University, cum laude 1951, she continued her education at Syracuse Law School, graduating magna cum laude in Jean s legal career began as Legal Counsel for Municipal Affairs in the New York State Comptroller s Office. Returning to the Syracuse area when her father was ill, Jean served for a year as Deputy Clerk to the Children s Court of Onondaga County. After her father s death, she returned to the Albany area and, in 1956, joined the N.Y. S. Assembly staff as a Research Counsel. In 1957, Jean became an Assistant Attorney General in the N.Y.S. Department of Law. In 1971 she became Assistant Solicitor General for New York State. She ended her career as Deputy Counsel for the N.Y.S. Education Department. Jean argued many precedent setting cases in the New York State Court of Appeals and her reputation among the bar and the judiciary was unparalleled. Jean joined the Zonta Club of Saratoga County in 1962, transferring from the Zonta Club of Syracuse. She served as the Governor of District II and was Parliamentarian of the Zonta International Board from She served as Chairman of the Zonta International By-Law Committee. An active member of her Ballston Spa community, her humanitarian efforts were always with a small h and never self-serving. Good things just happened and most people never knew that Jean was the impetus behind the results. In 1982, Jean died at age 52. Shortly thereafter, District II established the District II Jean M. Coon Humanitarian Award to honor her many achievements. Who may apply Each Zonta Club in District II solicits applications from high school juniors and seniors in its area. In the spring, each club selects a club award winner. Each club winner becomes a District finalist. The Award is announced in May and presented at the District II Conference or Seminar in October of every year. 8 The Greater Loudonville Association, Inc. Leslie F. Couch Prize Sponsored by the Greater Loudonville Association, this $1,000 cash award for a graduating senior residing in the Town of Colonie. This is designed for a community minded student who volunteers their time. Applications may be picked up in the guidance office. Deadline: March 24, Center for Donation and Transplant The 2018 Amy Bindelglass Memorial Scholarship is now available! The scholarship was founded by the Center For Donation & Transplant (CDT) in memory of a two year-old organ donor who lost her life in an automobile accident. Another young child was given a new chance at life because Amy's family made the incredible decision to donate her organs. The award of $750 will go to the winner of this essay contest. Applicants must be a high school junior or senior. Deadline: March 30, Capital District YMCA Outstanding Student and Educator Awards On behalf of the Capital District YMCA s Guilderland and Bethlehem branches we would like to thank you for your interest in the 2018 Outstanding Student and Educator Awards. This is our twenty-first annual event for the Guilderland and Bethlehem YMCA s Student and Educator Awards which recognizes the best of the best in our local high schools; spotlighting those students and educators that demonstrate leadership and volunteerism in their respective school, community and/or YMCA.
