2 WELCOME Welcome to Entebbe! We are very excited that you are with us for this unique event that we hope will be the start of a great envigoration of peace studies at African Universities. We have with us some five dozen attendees from fifteen countries from Africa, Europe, and North America. The planning committee hopes that your stay here in Entebbe is pleasant, and that the institute s work is fruitful and beneficial for you. Many people have played a part in planning this event, and their generosity and hard work, coordinating across continents, have brought us to these days. The road here has had challenges, as political uncertainties in Kenya forced us to shift the event from Nairobi to Entebbe. Both the orginal hosts at Hekima College and our current hosts at Uganda Martyrs deserve great thanks. Please do not hesitate to let us know if we can do anything to make your experience at the institute as positive and productive as it can be. We hope you are able to take full advantage of the program s content, but also this invaluable time together with colleagues from whom we hope you will be able to gain much wisdom. We encourage you to use as much time as you can during breaks, workshops, meals, and off times to get acquainted with and learn from each other. Again, we are delighted that you are here with us, and we very much look forward to getting to know you and work with you over these three days. Thank you for your time and presence, The Planning Team Institute Background This Institute is a response to recommendations developed at the Conference of the Catholic Episcopate of the Great Lakes Region for Peace and Reconciliation, which was held in Burundi October 19-21, 2010, and which were further developed in the Proposal for Research in Education for Peace, which was approved by the General Assembly of the Association of Catholic Universities and Higher Institutes of Africa and Madagascar (ACUHIAM) in The Final Declaration from the October 2010 conference, which was signed by Archbishop Simon Ntamwana (Gitega, Burundi), President of the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa (ACEAC), and Bishop Emmanuel Obbo (Soroti, Uganda), Delegate of the President of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), identified three related crosscutting challenges: underutilization and insufficient awareness of the Church s unique potential to promote peace and reconciliation; the lack of pertinent information on the underlying causes of our problems; and insufficient coordination of the Church s initiatives for peace and reconciliation. More specifically, this Institute responds to the Declaration s call for initiatives to promote synergy between the institutions of the Catholic Church in the region by way of a close collaboration between universities, research centers, Justice and Peace Commissions, various levels of Caritas, [and] social communications services.
