15 DEFINITION : HUMAN WILD-LIFE CONFLICT Human-Wildlife conflict is an interaction between humans and wildlife that results in negative impacts on human social, economic or cultural life, on the conservation of wildlife populations or on the environment WWF Human-wildlife conflict occurs when the need and behavior of wildlife impact negatively on the goals of human or when The goals of humans negatively impact the needs of wildlife WWF Wildlife in our landscape Though the weather and season (outside the migratory birds season) was often not so conducive for spotting wildlife, most estates had a fair amount of wildlife present. Over the course of the one-day field visits only a few larger mammals were observed inside the estates (Spectacled Langur: Mungka; Pigtailed Macaque: Kemedak, Bkt Payung; Long-tailed Macaque: everywhere except Bkt Kelompok, Mungka, Siang), Young and juveniles were noted for Wild Boar, Long-tailed Macaque, and Spectacled Langur (though only across the boundary river, outside Bukit Payung). Tracks or sightings of Elephant, Tiger and Tapir were seen or reported from Bkt Payung, Pasir Logok, Pasir Panjang, Siang (though not since 2006, when reportedly the last one was caught and relocated), Sungai Papan, and Tunjuk Laut. These are in essence temporal/occasional in nature, usually near estate boundaries, and likely the result of external pressure to relocate due to habitat destruction rather then indicative of permanent residency (Bkt Payung, Pasir Panjang, Tunjuk Laut). 25 KMB : HUMAN - WILDLIFE (ELEPHANT) CONFLICT In July 2010, WCS-Malaysia collaborated with Kulim (M) Berhad to implement a monitoring system of the electric fence that being erected along side the perimeter trenching. Location: The perimeter of the electric fence to be monitored is shown in the map. The path was chosen based on existing Kulim s elephant incursion records.
26 KMB : HUMAN - WILDLIFE (ELEPHANT) CONFLICT. HEC - ELECTRIC FENCE MONITORING Initial Monitoring Schedule implemented Establishment of monitoring team of 2 4 person to walk the fence line every 3 days Locate elephant signs (tracks/dung/trails) & record location using GPS Record any visible damage to the fence, vegetation touching the fence wires, wire breaks, sparking Measure and record the fence voltage at energizers will also be measured Photo credit : WCS
