3 With the departure of five team members Tyler Phillips, Christina Heaton, Amanda Watters and Blake Reburn, II are the returning shooters for the Buckeyes. Phillips, a fifth-year senior saw action last season at the Collegiate Nationals finishing 21st in free pistol. Last season he posted season-highs of 505 in open pistol, 536 in standard pistol and 556 in air pistol. Heaton, a junior, finished 15th in women s sport pistol at the nationals. She posted season-highs of 541 in women s sport and 357 in women s air pistol last season. Watters, a senior, saw action only in the fall quarter last season. Her season highs included 492 in women s sport and 310 win women s air pistol. Reburn, a sophomore, finished 16th in free pistol, 17th in air pistol and tied for 31st in standard pistol at the Collegiate Nationals. He shot season-highs of 530 in free, 535 in standard and 556 in air pistol last season. Christina Heaton The incoming class includes senior Brian Basenback and freshmen Kimberly Hullings, Mariah Skiles, Joe Totts and A.J. Tourginy. Basenback, who served four years with the United States Marines, brings a shooters mentality to the team. Hullings has been an indoor and outdoor champion in New Jersey. Totts holds 11 national records and has international experience. Tourginy, a member of the Massachusetts Air Pistol Team, has competed in state and national Junior Olympic events. He is an active competitor and besides college coaching, directs the State of Ohio International Pistol Championships as well as leagues in air gun, action pistol and bullseye. Sweeney served as interim coach for the Ohio State pistol team in 1986 and 1987, taking the team to the nationals both years. In , his first as head coach, the Buckeyes captured the National Collegiate Championships as well as winning national team titles in free pistol, standard pistol, women s air and sport pistol. In 2009, his women s team won the National Collegiate Championship for the third time in six years. Sweeney was named the NRA Distinguished Coach of the Year at the Championship. Sweeney is a retired professor of sports pedagogy from The Ohio State University, working in the area of teacher preparation for most of his professional career while teaching college classes in rifle, pistol, archery, bicycling and backpacking. He was the OSU men s varsity assistant gymnastics coach from 1960 to 1962; the men s varsity gymnastics head coach at Washington State University from 1962 to 1966 and the men s varsity gymnastics head coach at Ohio State from 1966 to 1977 where he was honored as the NCAA Mid-East Coach of the Year in Sweeney earned his B.S. from Ohio State in 1957 in physical education. After graduation he taught and coached in Erie, Mich., for the Mason Consolidated Schools. He returned to Ohio State in 1960 as an instructor and earned his master s degree in curriculum design that year. From 1962 to 1966 he was an assistant professor at Washington State University. During the summers he returned to Columbus and received his Ph.D. in sport pedagogy with a minor in educational psychology. He returned to Ohio State in 1966 as an assistant professor and became an associate professor in Sweeney retired in 1994 but continues to teach with emeritus status. One of Sweeney s greatest sources of pride is that of coaching three Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor winners, in two different sports at Ohio State: Bruce Trott in gymnastics with Laura Murray and Jessica Marshall in pistol. sweeney quick facts Full Name: James Michael Sweeney Born: May 15, 1934 Hometown: Lake Milton, Ohio High School: North Jackson-Milton Playing Career: High school football and track; Ohio State freshman football in 1952; Ohio State varsity gymnastics from , captain in 1956 and qualified for nationals, finishing ninth on rings. Assisted Under: Joseph Hewlett at Ohio State (gymnastics), Highlights: 1968 NCAA Mid-East Gymnastics Coach of the Year; coached several All-Americans in gymnastics and an Ohio State Big Ten Medal of Honor winner; Won the 2000 Collegiate Pistol Championships and the 2000 and 2004 Women s Champoinships; 2001 runner-up at the 2001 Collegiate Pistol Championships; has had four individuals win 10 Collegiate Pistol Championships; named the NRA Distinguished Coach of the Year in 2004 The Man: Avid sports fan, especially in individual and Olympic style sports. Has competed in such diverse sports as shooting, archery, canoe racing, hydroplane racing, gymnastics and acrosport. His personal philosophy of coaching is that sports are for athletes, rather than athletes being for sports. I try never to pressure my athletes to be good, rather I try to create an environment in which they take it upon themselves to excell. One thing most people don t know is that Sweeney was a foster parent for 16 years, working with various age children until they were adopted or could return to their homes. donna knisley 11th season, Milligan College 1984 assistant coach Assistant coach Donna Knisley brings 19 years of active competitive and teaching experience to the team. She earned a B.S. in Health and Physical Education at Milligan College in Knisley is a recent retiree from the College of Medicine and is planning to devote her services full time to the pistol team. She also rings the Orton Hall Chimes for most of the special occasions on campus which has included the spring graduation on the oval. She has taught rifle and pistol marksmanship in numerous clinics and camps from elementary through adult levels. In her first year of formal college coaching, she was instrumental in helping Ohio State capture the 2000 National Collegiate Championships. Her own record of competitive achievements speaks well for her with many accomplishments in rifle as well as winning the 1993 State of Ohio championship in air pistol. She became certified as an NRA Advanced Pistol Coach in Knisley s specialty is instilling good fundamental skills in new shooters and developing effective mental attitudes for maximum performance. 4

5 laura murray Laura Murray was a true champion in the classroom as well as in athletic competition. She graduated having won two individual national championships and was a member of the 2000 National Collegiate Championship Pistol Team. Murray was awarded the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor as the top female athlete at The Ohio State University for jessica marshall Jessica Marshall was honored with the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor in Her career saw her win six national titles, three each in 2003 and 04 (women s air and sport pistol and two-gun aggregate). She helped Ohio State to win the 2004 women s national title at the NRA National Collegiate Championships. Marshall was a 12-time All-American. Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range In 1875 the Ohio State University shooting facilities were at what is now the Ohio State Fair Grounds. Since that time the shooting range has been in several locations on campus. In 1966 the present range in Converse Hall was dedicated by President Novice G. Fawcett in honor of Lt. Hugh W. Wylie. Lt. Wylie, of Circleville, Ohio, was a graduate of OSU and was a member of the Army ROTC. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division in North Africa, Italy and Holland. On Sept. 17, 1944, Lt. Wylie was killed near Arnheim, Holland in the battle that inspired the book and movie A Bridge Too Far. The Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range is a 20 point range set for 50 foot and 10 meter shooting with respective 22 caliber ammunition and precision air guns.
