Time of year leaves some in depression By Barbara Johnson (See CHRISTMAS, page 3) U.S. Army Kwajalein Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands Christine Jones,7, and her mother, Vicki, play to fill in the time waiting to board the AMC flight on Thursday afternoon. They are traveling to the states with the rest of their family to enjoy the holidays in Alabama. On a wing and a prayer Off-island travel doesn t have to be a nightmare Story and photo by KW Hillis After making the decision to take vacation, what should be done first? (See VACATIONS, page 2)
Vacations require more than just luggage... (From page 1) What if a commercial carrier is used to leave the island? The Commanding Officer...Col. Gary K. McMillen Public Affairs Officer...Preston Lockridge Editor...Pat Cataldo, Jim Bennett Associate Editor...Peter Rejcek Feature Writers...Barbara Johnson Bob Fore KW Hillis Graphics Designer...Dan Adler Circulation Manager...Bobby Lamug Sr. The Hourglass is named for the insignia of the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division, which liberated the island from the forces of Imperial Japan on Feb 4, The is an authorized publication for military personnel, federal employees, contractor workers and their families assigned to USAKA/KMR. Contents of the Hourglass are not necessarily official views of, or endorsed by, the U.S. Government, Department of Defense, Department of the Army or USAKA/KMR. It is published Tuesdays and Fridays using a network printer by Raytheon Range Systems Engineering editorial staff, P.O. Box 23, APO AP Phone: Autovon ; local Printed circulation: 2,300 What about off-island travel arrangements? Can passengers be bumped? Finally, the actual day of departure arrives. Now passengers just show up with tickets in hand and leave, right? Wrong. Why bring luggage when checking in so far ahead of time? What is so critical about being back at exactly the time given? What if a traveler has a flat tire and is running late? Is there a way to still make the flight? What should a traveler know about returning to Kwajalein after vacation?
Robertson leaves legacy of KFAP 20-year Army veteran returns to the states Story and photo Peter Rejcek 1st Sgt. Ozell Robertson PCSed this week after his 18-month tour on Kwajalein came to an end. The 20-year Army veteran said he would miss the island s small-town atmosphere. Robertson said he hoped to be promoted to sergeant major over the Army s promotions division. Christmas can be red, green and even blue... (From page 1)
Plethora of species populate the waters Part III Silky sharks Despite its ferocious name, the leopard shark is inoffensive by nature but will bite if provoked by humans. (Photo by David Sansone) Tiger sharks
Lemon sharks are shy and prefer to habitate calm, murky waters. They feed mostly on bottom dwellers, and are members of one of the more rare species in Micronesia. Silver-tip sharks Lemon sharks Silkys are one of the most common sharks in these waters, as well as the bane of fishermen, because they tend to devour a catch before it s brought on board ship.
