Welcome from National Chief Perry Bellegarde Dear Delegates: On behalf of our Assembly of First Nations (AFN), I am pleased to welcome you to the AFN First Nations Health Summit. In 2017, the AFN published the First Nations Health Agenda (FNHTA) which provides an advocacy framework for advancing First Nations health. One of the foundational messages of the FNHTA is the need to get the relationships right. This principle comes from the recognition that building First Nations developed and controlled health systems requires building relationships at all levels; right from the service delivery level, to provinces and territories, and with the federal government. In addition, these relationships must be based on the recognition and respect for First Nations inherent, Treaty and Aboriginal rights. The First Nations Health Summit, with the theme of Getting the Relationships Right: Health Governance in the Era of Reconciliation, is part of the AFN s efforts to facilitate this relationship building and to amplify innovative First Nations-built health programs, services and systems from across the country that have found success in overcoming jurisdictional gaps. We continue to work to influence real and meaningful change in First Nations health, to ensure that our nations are provided the freedom, resources and tools to design and deliver health systems based on our own priorities, wisdom, and strength. I encourage all participants to participate in productive dialogue to advance the system transformations that will generate safe, healthy, and prosperous First Nations. Welcome from Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day Dear Delegates: On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Chiefs Committee on Health (CCoH), I am pleased to welcome you to the AFN First Nations Health Summit. As Chair of the CCoH, I am committed to achieving health equity for our people. With this goal in mind, over the last few years, the AFN has sought to advance First Nations health systems that are built by and for First Nations people through the development and promotion of the AFN First Nations Health Agenda (FNHTA). The FNHTA sits on the foundation of three primary advocacy positions. These are as follows: 1. Getting the Relationships Right - for all of those within the healthcare world to work with First Nations in a way which respects the First Nations right to selfdetermination as part of Treaty, inherent and international rights. 2. Meaningful Investments in First Nations Health - simply put, effective health systems require investment. 3. Support First Nations Capacity First - sustainable solutions require supporting capacity at the First Nations community and organizational level. This Summit is intended to share lessons from the many innovators in First Nations health governance, and to advance the conversation around rights and responsibilities, reciprocal accountability and getting the relationships right! I look forward to productive and positive discussions over the next two days.
