Standard Operating Procedure 7 (SOP 7) Child Protection Supervision - Dudley Why we have a procedure? This procedure is to ensure practitioners who require safeguarding supervision have access to one to one and group supervision for any case they have a safeguarding concern about. It will aim to ensure practitioners are aware of the process of child protection supervision and cases which have a lower threshold e.g.: Child In Need/ Early Help. Good quality supervision can help to: Keep a focus of the CYP Avoid drift Maintain a degree of objectivity and challenge fixed views Test and assess the evidence base for assessment and decisions, and Address the emotional impact of work What overarching policy the procedure links to? Group Inpatients Community Locations Mental Health Services all Learning Disabilities Services all Children and Young People Services all Who does the procedure apply to? This applies to Health Visitors, Family Nurses, Allied Health professionals, Children s Community Nursing Team, Community Disability Nurses, Children s Assessment Unit and all other children s community nurses employed by the Trust providing services for Dudley. This SOP also extends to School Nurses working for Shropshire Community Trust. When should the procedure be applied? How to carry out this procedure For supervision following a child being placed on a Child Protection Plan please see Child Protection Supervision flowcharts below: Child Protection Supervision (Dudley Practitioners Only) Child is made subject to a child protection plan AHP / CCNT / CAU / CDT / ETC HV/ FNP / F.I / SHN Liaise with social worker for outcome of conference if you did not attend Inform Safeguarding Team via telephone of category of the plan Group supervision will take place monthly with staff - by the safeguarding team A date will be booked for the initial supervision session at this time. If any practitioner requires one to one supervision this can be booked at any point following the initial case conference by telephoning the safeguarding team For group sessions practitioners do not need to complete any paperwork For one to one supervision sessions the One to One paperwork (Appendix 1) must be completed prior to the session All Health Visitors and School Nurse practitioners who are involved in the Child protection plan will be invited to an initial supervision session with the safeguarding team 6 to 8 weeks after the initial conference- if possible a group session may be undertaken if more than one practitioner is working with the family and schedules allow. Following this session the practitioners will be supervised within their own service unless concerns have been identified and then further supervision will be offered by the safeguarding team Health Visitor and School Nurse practitioners MUST complete the One to One supervision paperwork (Appendix 1);prior to all sessions, whether group or individual The supervision session will not go ahead if the practitioner has not completed the paperwork Child Protection Supervision Dudley Page 2 of 11 Version 1.0 October 2016

This may include a current child protection case that has previously been supervised by the safeguarding team Practitioner to initially seek guidance and support from their Line Manger / Team Leader / Safeguarding Supervisor If after this initial discussion further support is required the practitioner should : Send an email request to the safeguarding team NHS email to request safeguarding supervision stating the number of children/families that supervision is required for and the reason for supervision The practitioner will receive contact from the safeguarding team to agree a time and date for supervision Prior to the session the practitioner MUST complete the One to One supervision paperwork (Appendix 1), if this is not completed the session will not go ahead Child Protection Supervision Dudley Page 3 of 11 Version 1.0 October 2016
