The 1600 Communicator A publication exclusively for members of the 1600 Communications Association Late Spring, 2015 (May) President s Message Members, take note - several important dates are approaching! The deadline is just around the corner for submitting applications for our 2015 educational scholarships (May 31). The application and eligibility requirements are provided at www.1600commassoc.org. We have issued over $60,000.00 in scholarships to eligible 1600 Communications Association members and their family over the past six years. Also, take those golf clubs out of storage and start practicing before tee time at our 22nd annual 1600 Communications Association Golf Tournament, June 19, 2015 at Joint Base Andrews. Registration deadline is June 1, 2015. Please get those foursome teams together and submit your paperwork along with payment if you haven t already done so time is running out! WHCA s Open House / 1600 Communications Association Shrimp Feast and Barbecue will be held June 20, 2015. This will be at WHCA s HQ, McNally Building located on Anacostia NAS (flyer is included with this newsletter). Please note, this is an access controlled military base, requiring at least one member of each party in your POV to have a DOD or CAC government ID for base access. If you do not have base access and need assistance please email Danny Young at DannyY@1600commassoc.org or Glenn Arnett at GlennA@1600commassoc.org by June 15, 2015. Finally, a note about memberships: If you have not renewed your membership, please do so before June 15, 2015. Lifetime membership is also available. As a more convenient option, we accept credit cards/paypal for dues payments. The annual membership runs from January 1 though December 31 at a cost of $30.00; lifetime memberships are available as well (additional fees apply if submitting payment online). The deadline for submitting applications for educational scholarships is fast approaching. If you are a member in good standing, the application must be completed, mailed and postmarked by May 31, 2015. Complete information on the application and eligibility requirements is provided on the Association website. On April 16, 2015, the Gray Beards met at Crystal City Sports Pub-Sports Bars to catch up and reconnect. The Gray Beards Social members are the current WHCA Commander, Command Sergeants Major, former WHCA Commanders, and Sergeants Majors. In attendance were Col Donovan Routsis, WHCA Commander, CSM Nathaniel Jett, WHCA Command Sergeant Major, Col Michael Black USAF (ret), Col Margaret Baldwin, USAF (ret) COL Clinton R. WHCA BIRTHDAY BALL! Both current and former members of the White House Communications Agency joined together on April 18, 2015 to celebrate the Agency s 73rd birthday. Approximately 350 people enjoyed an evening of reconnecting, fellowship, dining, and dancing at the Crystal City Gateway Marriott, in Arlington, Virginia. Special alumni guests included COL Joseph J. Simmons IV, USAF, former Director of the White House Military Office and WHCA Commander, former WHCA Commander, Col Michael B. Black, USAF (ret), and for WHCA Command Sergeant Major, CSM Samuel Watkins, USA (ret). The DISA Director, Lieutenant General Ronnie D. Hawkins Jr., gave an inspirational speech that paid the highest tribute to Agency members, both past and present. Colonel Donovan Routsis, the current WHCA Commander recognized the following Agency All-Stars: MSgt Longfellow, Kathleen V. Also recognized was Floyd S. Hepler, USA (ret), who received the 1600 Communication Association s 2014 Honor Member of the Year (photo below). Floyd serves as the Editor in Chief on the 1600 Communications Association Board and has previously held various board positions. The event was an overall success, enjoyed by all in attendance. 2015 -- 1600 Communications Association Annual Golf Outing Proceeds benefit the Association Scholarship Fund and Wounded Troops Charities Come join us for our 22 nd annual golf outing on two of the courses at Joint Base Andrews (Andrews Air Force Base) on Friday, June 19, 2015. Shotgun start at 1400, registration begins at 1200 and closes at 1330. Format is four player teams, Captain s choice, best ball. Full tournament rules will be provided at the course, or by contacting the Golf Committee. This is a full handicap tournament: entrants without handicaps must attest to their average scores over their last several rounds. The Golf Committee will assign handicaps to those without one, and will provide pairings for entrants who do not have a foursome. Prizes will be awarded for Team Low Gross, Team Low Net, and many individual prizes, including Longest Drive, Straightest Drive, and Closest to Pin, for both Men and Women. Hole in One prizes on all Par 3 s. Entry fees include all fees, Mulligans, on-line team photos, and post-round buffet meal, and are as follows: Active Duty Military & Dependents: $70.00 MilStat A (If using PayPal $73.00) Retired & Dependents/All Others: $90.00 MilStat R/C (If using PayPal $93.00) For more information, contact Glenn Arnett at glenna@1600commassoc.org.
