July 1, 2017 Dear Parents: I hope your summer is going well! Believe it or not, the school year starts next month. First, if you have a child who will be in grades 6-12, your child will be issued a Chromebook and case during the first full week of school at no cost to you! Use of the Chromebook will not replace traditional textbooks. Textbooks will still be used in some classes. Free/Reduced Meals Income Eligibility Guidelines Students may qualify for free or reduced price meals based on family income and size. You can apply for these benefits when you complete the online registration process. Eligibility may be based on total income and size (i.e., number of household members) of a participant s household. Children from households whose incomes are at or below the levels shown in the appropriate table are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. If any member of the household receives Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) benefits, children are eligible for free meals. Important Information Concerning Optional Student Insurance July 2017 Dear Parents: The East Porter County School Corporation does not insure students for injuries that occur on the playground, in physical education class, in the classroom, or on other school corporationowned property, including school buses. Given the number of students we have and the nature of active students, this type of insurance is simply too costly for the school corporation. Your family insurance usually covers these injuries. We do insure students and others against injuries caused by negligence of East Porter County procedures and staff. However, most injuries that occur at school are accident related and do not fall into this category. Students who participate in athletics are required to have accident insurance in order to participate. Proof of insurance must be provided before the student will be allowed to practice. For families who need help with health insurance for their children, Hoosier Healthwise is a program that provides a sliding scale of assistance based on family size and income level. You can contact Hoosier Healthwise by phone at 1-800-889-9949 or on the Internet at www.in.gov/fssa/ompp/2544.htm. If you do not qualify for healthcare assistance through Hoosier Healthwise, an insurance carrier may provide optional, supplemental student insurance at a low cost to you. Information about optional insurance can be found on the next page. If your child is not covered, or not sufficiently covered, under your family health insurance, one of these programs may be an economical way to provide your child with health insurance. The decision to insure your child is yours. If you have sufficient insurance, you may not need these programs. The letter is being provided to you with the hope of avoiding family financial problems if your child has an accident at school. East Porter County does not receive any benefit from your participation or non-participation in these programs. Sincerely, Dr. Rod Gardin Superintendent Page 6 of 6
