RUTHANN PAPKE SCHOLARSHIP The Ruthann Papke Scholarship was established in 2010. Ruthann was the Vice President of Patient Care Services at Mercy Medical Center - Clinton from 1990-2008. She established the scholarship because the advancement and education of nurses at Mercy is an important legacy, especially when the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and American Nurses Association (ANA) recommends 80% BSN prepared nurses at the bedside by 2020. Therefore, the scholarship recipients are chosen primarily because they are pursuing a BSN. Ruthann believes the quality of nursing care delivered at Mercy is outstanding; however, research shows that BSNs at the bedside significantly reduces patient mobidity and mortality, as the curious, research minded nurse continually seeks more refined and specialized methods of care delivery. Ruthann is married to Gary (a retired farmer). They have three children and six grandchildren. Ruthann and her husband have lived in Clinton for the past 20 years and are deeply involved in multiple community activities. They enjoy traveling together, exercise, and reading. Ruthann is an avid knitter, always working on several projects for her family. Ruthann has been a nurse since 1977, when she graduated from Clinton Community College. She earned a BSN in 1987 and an MSN in 1991, both from the University of Dubuque. Ruthann has been certified as a NEA-BC (Nurse Executive Advanced Board Certified) with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) since 2002. Ruthann continues to work in the nursing field as a Magnet Appraiser for the American Nurses Association. Recently, Ruthann returned to the Mercy scene as the Executive Director of Mercy Healthcare Foundation
