Weber State University Annual Assessment of Evidence of Learning Department/Program: School of Nursing Master of Science in Nursing Date Submitted: 11/21/201 Report author: Melissa NeVille DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC Contact Information: Phone: 801-626-6204 Email: mneville@weber.edu A. Brief Introductory Statement: The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at Weber State University prepares innovative nurse experts who are capable of shaping and advancing the practice and profession of nursing. The curriculum is designed to promote national guidelines and competencies that enable graduates to make a significant contribution to education and healthcare environments. 1

The MSN program provides two curriculum tracks; nurse administrator and nurse educator. The Master s in Nursing Education prepares graduates to function in a variety of academic and clinical settings. MSN graduates are prepared to design curriculum, develop evaluation strategies, implement innovative teaching strategies and educate students in both academic and clinical settings. The Master s in Nursing Administration prepares graduates to operate at the highest levels of healthcare organizations. MSN graduates are prepared to design and establish professional practice environments, lead interdisciplinary care teams, establish best practice standards and establish systems and processes that focus on best care for the patient and the best environment for professional nurses to practice Students with a current master s in nursing degree who are looking to augment existing nursing knowledge and advance employment opportunities can apply for the Post-Master s Degree Certification in Nursing Education and Nursing Administration. There were 34 graduates in Spring 2013. In Fall 2013, the 6 th cohort consisting of 24 students began their program of Study. Twelve students are registered for the administrator track and twelve students are on the educator track. The Evaluation Committee is now responsible for completing evaluations of the MSN program as part of the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) requirements. This information is also used for program review and process improvement. Program evaluation information is disseminated to faculty during monthly program meetings. Evaluation data is obtained from the following: (1) bi-annual student evaluation of courses, (2) bi-annual student evaluation of faculty performance evaluations, (3) annual student evaluation of end of program, (4) bi-annual course review by course chairs, (5) graduation rates, (6) job attainment in related field of study and (7) employer satisfaction. Semester course evaluation is provided at the conclusion of each semester by course chairs. In addition, courses are presented to the MSN faculty and program director for review every two years. A 2

newly designed alumni survey was developed and will be sent out to MSN graduates six months following graduation. This process will begin in November, 2013 for the 5 th cohort of students who graduated in April 2013. Summary of 2012-2013 academic year: Replacement of MSN program director by Dr. NeVille in July, 2013. Former director, Dr. Barra to remain as full-time faculty. Course and faculty evaluation data exceeded 3.5/5.0 benchmark for academic year. Overall student satisfaction on End of Program Evaluation exceeded 3.5/5.0 benchmark for academic year. The first student accepted for educator post master s certificate program. Marketing for certificate students occurred. Collaborative development of MENG 6810: Professional Writing for graduate students Preparation for 2014 Accreditation was addressed. Development of MSN core competencies occurred. The student learning competencies were adapted and leveled from the SON competencies. The six core competencies are patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, informatics, safety, evidence-based practice and quality improvement. These competencies are addressed throughout the curriculum and student mastery is determined through measurable outcomes. B. Mission Statement Our vision is to lead the nation in innovative learning environments which incorporate technology, challenge learners, develop educators, and transform health care worldwide. Our vision statement is future-oriented and supports the mission and philosophy of WSU SON. The WSU nursing faculty articulates a philosophy for the School of Nursing that is consistent with that of the university and the Dumke College of Health Professions. The philosophy statements define the faculty s core values as they relate to professional nursing education and practice.
