Introduction to HKCPN
has incorporated in Hong Kong under the company ordinance on 6 January 2012. Hong Kong College of Paediatric Nursing (HKCPN) Ltd becomes a professional education and accreditation body recognized by the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing (HKAN). comprises of nurses from various paediatric specialties of both public and private sectors in Hong Kong. includes Child and Adolescent Health, Paediatric Intensive Care, Neonatal Care, Oncology and School Health.
Goal HKCPN is dedicated to promote excellence and professional standards in paediatric nursing through the core competencies in advanced nursing, quality educational and research based practices.
a) to oversee and promote the advancement of the art and science of paediatric nursing; b) to define and promote the standards of advanced nursing practice for the paediatric subspecialties; Objectives Of HKCPN c) to assess, organize, monitor and accredit the paediatric nursing training programs; d) to develop the professional standards for advanced paediatric nursing practice; e) to arrange examinations for eligible candidates to be accredited as advanced practice nurses;

The Council & Committees The HKCPN is an autonomous, professional organization advised by a Council of 15 voluntary members. Each Council member serves a term of three years.

Criteria & pathway in becoming a Fellow of Hong Kong College of Paediatric Nursing
Admission Criteria to Associate Membership 1. Holder of a valid RN license certified by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong; 2. RN who has worked in the paediatric specialty 2 years 3. A self declaration of no criminal conviction and professional misconduct 4. Attain 15CNE points in previous year
1. Holder of a valid RN license certified by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong; Admission Criteria to Ordinary Membership 2. RN who has worked in the specialty for at least an accumulative 4 years in the most recent 6 years; 3. Holder of a master degree in nursing or related practice; 4. Make a self-declaration on no criminal conviction / professional misconduct.
5. RN who has completed recognized 500 hours of theory in the specified specialty curriculum; Admission Criteria to Ordinary Membership 6. RN who has completed 500 hours of clinical practice in the related specialty with proof (Clinical Logbook) ; 7. Pass the Membership Certification Examination A Multiple-choice Questions Examination of 150 questions.
1. Holder of a valid RN license certified by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong; 2. Ordinary Member of the HKCPN and HKAN; Admission Criteria to Fellow Membership 3. Worked in the specialty for at least an accumulative 6 years in the most recent 9 years; 4. With 6 years specialty experience of which the current 3 years must be working in the specialty applied for; 5. Make a self-declaration on no criminal conviction / professional misconduct. 6. Achieved 60 CNE points within a 3-year Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Cycle, of which 45 CNE points should be specialty related;
Admission Criteria to Fellow Membership 7.Demonstrate significant contribution in nursing practice and/or service development; 8.Passed the assessment stipulated by college; 9.Recommended by 2 Fellow Members of his/her college to HKAN for consideration of granting Fellow Membership. Members need to apply for Fellowship within 3 years upon becoming eligible as an Academy Member, otherwise the eligibility would lapse.

Besides 500 hours of theory input, candidates eligible to sit for the Membership Exam should have completed a minimum of 500 hours of direct bedside care (supervised practice & practice). Scenarios reflecting the corresponding competencies of the domains should be well documented in clinical logbook.
Curriculum Design
Candidates have to complete a minimum of 500 clinical hours of care of Paediatric nursing in accredited training site(s) within the latest 4 years time span out of their 6 years of the post-graduated nursing experience. The clinical experiences can be 100% under supervision or with some (at most 50%) in work placement situations, as follows: Clinical Practice Experience 0% - 50% Clinical Work Placement. Clinical Work Placement experience refers to the experience in which there is no on-site designated appointed mentor. However, the experience is recognized as a learning component with explicit exposure to various cases handling and care. This period of exposure needs to be proved by a recognized supervisor/mentor. 50% - 100% Guided Clinical Practice Supervised Practice refers to the experience in which there is an on-site designated appointed mentor who is a Fellow in HKCPN. When situation arises that no fellow of the college is available, a doctor or the nursing supervisor meeting the requirement developed by the Hong Kong College of Paediatric Nursing (HKCPN) may be appointed by the college to be the mentor in the local clinical setting to guide the mentee in clinical learning. However, a fellow of the respective specialty should be appointed by the HKCPN to be the off-site mentor to facilitate the mentees clinical learning.
Logbook
The logbook is a record that assists the mentor in : assessing the competency of the mentee and Clinical Logbook providing support and guidance to accomplish training at the advanced practice level as required Providing on-going assessment during the training period Such practice must be supervised by designated on-site mentor(s) Fellow of HKCPN.
How to prepare for a Fellow exit assessment?
Candidates become Members of HKCPN after passing the HKCPN Membership Examination Application for Fellowship Assessment Members who want to become fellows should: complete the application form downloaded from HKCPN website: www.hkcpn.org and mail the completed applications to HKCPN for consideration Members need to apply for Fellowship within 3 years upon becoming eligible as an Academy Member, otherwise the eligibility would lapse
Preparation of Fellow Exit Assessment Find a Mentor in your specialty who is a Fellow of HKCPN to guide your learning Conduct a study / project related to your specialty & submit the report one month prior to assessment Submit Progression Milestones Specialty Reports Fellow Exit Assessment to be held in Dec/Jan annually Passing Mark 70% Three parts: Presentation of the study Competency: 7 Domains Service Impact
Identify a Fellow Mentor in your specialty at workplace; Explore the current case study/project/research and target the project completion date before sitting for Fellow Assessment; Aware the requirements of the cases/project/research report and discuss with your identified Fellow Mentor. Liaise with the HKCPN Examination Subcommittee for the project. Mentee Meet with the Mentor to develop the milestones / discuss the progress of the project on a regular basis. Fill in the Pre-fellowship Experience Record. Viva Assessment Prepare the relevant documents and apply for the Viva Assessment according to the announcement of HKCPN. Submit the project report one month prior to the Viva Assessment panel. Amend the project report and prepare the presentation according to the panel s comment Submit the final report to HKCPN one month after the Viva Assessment.
Roles and Responsibilities of a Fellow Mentor 1. Fellow Mentor should attend a briefing session provided by the HKCPN. 2. The specialty of the Fellow Mentor should be relevant to the assigned candidate. 3. Fellow Mentor should meet with the candidate on a regular basis to discuss the progress of the selected project. 4. Fellow Mentor should submit the Progression Milestones Specialty Reports to the Examination Sub- Committee. 5. Fellow Mentor should assist the candidate to prepare the written report and oral presentation.
Roles and Responsibilities of a Fellow Mentor 6. The candidate will be responsible for obtaining approval should there be any changes in the project proposal or procedures of an approved protocol. 7. Fellow and candidate are also reminded that for case review/ project/ research study involving human subjects to be carried out on premises providing healthcare services, the appropriate committee/person from the healthcare service must also be consulted. 8. Fellow Mentor is encouraged to attend the candidate s oral examination. 9. Fellow Mentor should report to the Examination Sub-committee for any concerns about the candidate s progress and issues relate to cases/project/research
Pre-Fellowship Experience Record
Compose of 2 5 % of the total score of the Viva Assessment The candidate must be the first author of the written report (cases review/project report/research study paper). The written report should relate to the candidate s current clinical specialty area. Case Report / Project / Research An original thesis written for a postgraduate degree is not allowed. The written report is expected to reflect the candidate s advanced paediatric nursing practice in her/his specialty. It is not allowed to submit the written report after the deadline of application. If the candidate s written report is considered as exceptionally unacceptable by the Panel of the Viva Assessment, he/she will fail the Fellow Exit Assessment irrespective of his/her overall score.
Case Report / Study and Outline i) The written report should be type-written on A4-size paper. ii) The written report should have a cover page with the candidate s name and membership number, the Fellow Mentor s name and job position, the report title, and the date of submission. iii) The written report should consist of 2,000 words. iv) The following components, plus other relevant documents inserted in the appendix, should be included in the written report of the candidate s selected cases review/project/research study: Background information with updated literature search/review of your selected cases / project / research study A clear statement of the identified issue of case/significance of project/research study Aims and objectives or hypothesis of the identified case/project/research study Ethical considerations (Refer to point No.7 for details) Case review process/project/research methodology: design, sample, study tool(s), procedure for data collection, data analysis Preliminary findings/results/outcome measures Discussion of findings/results/outcomes Implications for the impact of the school advanced nursing practice of the candidate s specialty in the local and/or international context
Progression Milestone Specialty Report for the Fellow Viva Assessment Identify an existing project/research in your workplace Set clear and specific objectives for outcome measures Develop a time schedule to meet project deadline Submit the Progression Milestone Specialty Report three times (baseline, intermittent and final) during the progress of the project. Complete the identified cases/project/research prior to sitting for the coming Fellow Viva Assessment.
