Introduction IEEE Student Branch at UC San Diego is a pre-professional organization dedicated to developing students into successful engineers by providing them with practical skills and personal development opportunities. We are the 2nd largest student branch in the country with more than 350 members. This past year we have held 40+ events, accommodating 1000+ people. These events include our four annual projects, three quarterly projects, a hackathon, technical and professional development events, and community outreach programs. Through these opportunities, we have paved way for students to network, collaborate and learn outside of the classroom. The growth opportunities for the UC San Diego engineering community will be greatly enhanced with your support, allowing us to instill students with professional and technical skills that will provide them with the experience and confidence they need to impact the global engineering community ieeeucsd.org 2

Micromouse Founded in the Fall of 2006, the Micromouse project has consistently been our largest and most celebrated project. To meet popular demand, we sponsor roughly 40 UC San Diego students to participate in the project and compete in our own competition called the California Micromouse Competition (CAMM). This project challenges students to create autonomous robotic mice programmed to solve a 16x16 cell maze. These mice are designed to explore and map the fastest route to solve the maze. The skills applied during this project include EagleCAD, digital signal processing, surface mount soldering, programming microcontrollers, embedded programming for ARM processors and IC s, PID control, and implementing flood fill algorithms. Funding 8 UC San Diego Undergraduate Teams ($250 per team) $2,000 Project Reusable Parts $600 Hosting California Micromouse Competition $600 Invitational Guest Travel Funds $400 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Prizes $900 Total $4,500 Projects ieeeucsd.org 3

GrandPrIEEE Founded in 2010, the Grand PrIEEE project challenges teams to design, build, and eventually race autonomous line-following vehicles on a long track of white tape placed on dark carpet. We support at least 50 UC San Diego students with mentorship and funding while they work in teams to design and build their vehicles. These students design analog circuitry for high currents and fine tune control algorithms to optimize track navigation at significant speeds, while developing their skills in circuit and PCB design, control theory, and digital signal processing. At the end of the year we host a competition for our home teams and visiting schools, where each car attempts the same track and the team with the best time wins. Funding 8 UCSD Undergraduate Teams ($380 per team) $3,040 Standardized Parts Kit, 8 (Line Scanner, motor) $1,000 Host UC San Diego Grand PrIEEE Competition $600 Invitational Guest Travel Funds $400 Invitational UC San Diego Travel Funds $600 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Prizes $900 Total $6,540 Projects ieeeucsd.org 4

Projects Project Drive Since 2011, a team of a dozen students are challenged to create a compact autonomous vehicle that can navigate through various outdoor terrains and compete in the SparkfunAVC competition in Niwot, CO. Project Drive is an advanced project that requires students with previous experience to write a research paper in addition to using integrated robotics systems, machine vision, and navigation/localization methods to design the vehicle. This project serves as a learning experience for members to become familiar with team functionality, research, and robotics systems. Skills applied during this project include: CAD design, signal processing with sensors, control theory with both PID and localization/navigation methods, and computer vision. Materials and Components $1,500 Travel Expenses ~5 People $2,500 Total $4,000 ieeeucsd.org 5

Quadcopter The IEEE Quadcopter Project began in 2014 and competes in the International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC). The IARC was founded in 1991 with the goal of advancing aerial robotics technology by challenging teams to solve previously unsolvable missions; the new Mission 8 requires four aerial robots to compete. Each year, we sponsor one team in their endeavor to complete the current mission and compete in the IARC. Our project consists of designing, developing and testing a black-box autonomous quadcopter swarm of four drones directed by a human director using voice- and gesture-controls to complete a series of tasks under duress. The project includes significant development in computer vision, control theory and system networking, in addition to managing team elements of the project such as tasking and running meetings. Parts and Research (Four Quadcopters) $2,500 Travel Expenses ~10 People $4,000 Total $6,500 Projects ieeeucsd.org 6

Projects Quarterly Projects Quarterly Projects are entry-level projects designed to introduce students to building their own engineering project. We don t expect experience or expertise instead, we look for people motivated to create and looking to enter the world of project design. Each quarter, we develop a challenge that will teach competitors fundamental skills in computer and electrical engineering such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, web design, prototyping, and building mobile apps leaving participants with the tools and knowledge necessary to design their own projects, and progress to larger scopes like our annual projects. We provide the challenge, materials, starter guides, workshops, and mentorship to around 30 students each quarter. The product is up to the student. We expect them to use resources available throughout the campus and those provided by IEEE, as well as to learn by doing and apply their creativity. Our goal is to see students take the specifications that we give them and design their own unique project that will be showcased at the competition at the end of each quarter. Materials and Components for 3 Quarters $2,000 Prizes for 3 Quarters $400 Events and Logistics $300 ieeeucsd.org 7 Total $2,700

New Project Because of the successes of our current projects, as well as the growing number of project-hungry students in our organization, we want to offer another annual project to our members. That s why we want your help to design a new project that will give our members hands-on and industry relevant skills. Corporate donations for this project will result in the unique opportunity to play a large role in guiding and directing the shape of the project. Materials and Components $5,000 Total $5,000 Projects ieeeucsd.org 8

Events Technical Every quarter, student Technical Chairs host workshops to teach students at UC San Diego practical engineering skills and prepare them for engineering careers. These workshops cover various topics such as circuit designing, soldering, PCB design, microcontrollers, and software development. Students appreciate that at the end of every workshop they get to take home their creation and continue tinkering. With your help we can better provide high quality and engaging workshops to 300+ student members every year. We also welcome company-hosted workshops, as well as the donation of materials. Hosting 10 Workshops (Parts & Logistics) $3,000 ieeeucsd.org 9 Total $3,000

Professional Professional development is essential for all engineering related disciplines. IEEE at UC San Diego is determined to provide students with collegiate opportunities to develop industry relevant skills that can be coupled with the technical skills to give our students a competitive advantage in the real world. Our professional development series includes workshops, tech talks, info sessions, recruitment events, and company tours. We would like to extend an invitation to you and your company to collaborate with us on similar Professional Development events such as hosting an info session, tech talk, tour, and/or recruiting event this year.
