CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE The Jardine Foundation provides excellent opportunities for outstanding young persons to benefit from the unique qualities of an Oxbridge education. The Scholarship Committee is delighted to note that over 290 Jardine Scholarships have now been awarded to extraordinary individuals from 11 countries. PROFESSOR SIR RICHARD TRAINOR RECTOR, EXETER COLLEGE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD CHAIRMAN SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE THE JARDINE FOUNDATION Within the Oxbridge collegiate system, students of all disciplines benefit from the free exchange of ideas and experiences at their college, within a context of cultural and social diversity. The environment nurtured by the colleges provides students with the ideal backdrop to enhance their personal and intellectual growth. As the Jardine Foundation Scholarship scheme is enlarged, Jardine Scholars become part of an increasing network of high-achieving individuals with strong interpersonal bonds. This offers our Scholars many opportunities to share their experiences with their peers in academic and professional discussions, and also to assist in the development of a well-rounded personality with leadership qualities and a commitment to society. Our programme is thriving, with steady growth in its support for postgraduate as well as undergraduate students, and with an increasing profile of collaboration with Oxford and Cambridge Universities on co-funded programmes. I expect to see the Jardine Scholars become senior members of their communities, as they come to play a full role in society and in their chosen professions. The Jardine Foundation joins me in looking forward to our continuing work to support fine young individuals, and to help them establish an exceptional foundation in life. OUR ALUMNI JARDINE SCHOLARS ARE SELECTED FOR THEIR DRIVE TO LEAD AND MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITIES THEY WORK AND LIVE IN. FROM INSPIRING WOMEN TO ENTER THE FIELD OF SCIENCE TO BEING A LEADING LIGHT IN THEIR CHOSEN PROFESSION, WE ARE PROUD OF OUR SCHOLARS WHO ARE TAKING ASIA INTO A BRIGHTER FUTURE. OPENED MANY DOORS CAREER-WISE. VIKRAM NAIR FROM: SINGAPORE COURSE OF STUDY: LAW My father is a lawyer and my mother, a psychologist; both are second-generation Singaporeans. I grew up in Singapore in the 80s and 90s, studying in local schools. I found out about the Jardine Scholarship when I was at my junior college. The principal said it was a scholarship worth considering for those interested in studying at Oxford and Cambridge. It is a generous, no-stringsattached scholarship and the effort that the Jardine Foundation makes to keep in touch with former scholars is admirable. The Scholarship helped provide me with an excellent education at Cambridge, which opened many doors career-wise. Being a Jardine alumni is an honour and a privilege that I am grateful for. It is deeply humbling when I look back, that the Jardine Foundation was kind enough to grant a scholarship to a young National Serviceman who had to get special permission to take time off to attend the interviews.
IT HAS ALSO ALLOWED ME GIVE BACK BY SUPPORTING NEW MEMBERS OF THE FOUNDATION AND IN BROADER OUTREACH PROGRAMMES. ELEANOR FUNG FROM: HONG KONG COURSE OF STUDY: NATURAL SCIENCES I come from a typical middle-class family in Hong Kong, and completed both primary and secondary schooling in Hong Kong before applying to university at the end of my A-levels. The opportunity offered by the Jardine Foundation to study at Cambridge University has shaped who I am today. Not only did the programme provide financial support to study at a renowned university, the Foundation also offered mentorship by senior leaders from the Group and current Scholars and alumni from the programme. Additionally, the internship opportunities the Group offered during my time as an undergraduate allowed me to gain deeper insight into the company and operations across Asia Pacific. Being a Jardine Scholar has been an honour. The support of the Foundation leadership and the friendships I have made through the alumni network have enriched my experience. It has also allowed me give back by supporting new members of the Foundation and in broader outreach programmes, including encouraging more women to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics at university. 11
