Jarvis Christian College Hawkins, Texas The History of the College Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Scholarships Founded in 1912, through the efforts of Black Disciples and the Christian Women s Board of Missions, Jarvis Christian College was modeled after the Southern Christian Institute at Edwards, Mississippi, as an elementary school. It later became a high school, junior college and finally an accredited four-year liberal arts college. The land for the school in Hawkins, Texas, was donated in 1910 by Major and Mrs. J.J. Jarvis, for whom the College is named. Jarvis Christian College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate degrees. Mission Statement Jarvis Christian College, a traditional liberal arts institution, provides a quality education in the Judeo- Christian tradition. The mission of the College is to prepare students intellectually, socially and personally to function effectively in a global and technological society. In support of its mission Jarvis Christian College strives to: 1) Provide the student with challenging learning experiences which explore varied responses to the human condition, develop the skill to facilitate analytical inquiry, promote global awareness, encourage social consciousness, foster creativity, inculcate concepts and develop skills that are essential for professional competence in the student s chosen career. 2) Provide financial, human and physical support for all activities, programs and purposes of the College in an environment which enhances effective learning. 3) Maintain fiscal responsibility and financial viability, provide a sound diverse financial base, attract additional financial resources, strengthen community relations, and provide academic and administrative support for continuous growth and expansion of the College, and 4) Provide programs and services that are conductive to the cultural, social, moral, mental, spiritual and physical growth and development of students.

Scholarships All scholarships at Jarvis Christian College are granted on the basis of need, character and /or academic record. Scholarships are made possible by gifts from individuals, families, congregations, and other expressions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. Scholarship funds are generated from interest earned on permanent funds and cash gifts, and are used as investments in students attending a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) school. Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis to those students who meet the established donor or College criteria. Eligible students must be members of a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). No student may receive a Jarvis Christian College sponsored scholarship as a cash allotment or advance unless specifically indicated by the scholarship donor. College bound and current students should review the list below and direct inquires to the Office of Recruitment and Admissions. Completed applications should be returned to the Office of Recruitment and Admissions, Jarvis Christian College, P.O. Box 1470, Hawkins, Texas 75765. Scholarship Guidelines and Procedures 1) Complete admissions application and submit all required documents (when applicable). 2) Complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA website www.fafsa.ed.gov Jarvis school code: 003637 3) Demonstrate financial need as required per individual scholarship criteria. 4) Provide official high school transcripts and official college transcripts, including Jarvis Christian College, if currently enrolled. 5) Provide ACT/SAT scores. 6) Meet all other eligibility requirements as stated. List of Scholarships Supported by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and DOC Affiliates The following is a listing, with criteria, of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) College-sponsored scholarships. Ballard, Lois Award Preference is given to ministerial students with a 2.50 or above cumulative average and in need of financial aid. Open to all classifications. Barber, William J. Scholarship The scholarship recipient must meet the following criteria: Junior or senior level classification with a cumulative GPA of 3.00. Preference will be given to students who hold active membership in a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and are studying for ministry.

Brittan, Louise C. Endowed Scholarship The annual award is available to any full-time student(s) enrolled at Jarvis Christian College. The recipient (s) must have completed at least one year at Jarvis with attainment of sophomore classification or higher; have maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (B); be of high moral character and display good citizenship; and be a member of at least one official campus organization or club. First preference will be given to a student majoring in religion. Dustin Ministerial Scholarship For ministerial students only. Citizenship, need and 2.50 or above average required. Open to all classifications. First Christian Church (Rule) Endowed Scholarship Criteria include need, academic performance, citizenship, 3.00 (B) or above average and active in the College Church. Students from West Texas receive preference. Frazier Endowed Scholarship Fund The recipient must be a full-time student at Jarvis and have demonstrated academic achievement; a minimum of 2.5 GPA based on a 4.0 system, and is a Disciple of Christ student preparing for the ministry. Gee, Patricia Ann Endowed Scholarship Criteria require that the recipient be a junior or senior with a GPA of 3.0 with preference given to students active in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Scholarship requires acknowledgement and thank you letter to donor. Greenville Avenue Christian Church Endowed Award Criteria include need, academic performance, citizenship, 2.00 (B) or better average. Open to all classifications. Preference is given to a student active in the College Church. Griffin, Thomas J. and Geneva Memorial Scholarship Preference given to students active in the College Church. Citizenship, need and 2.50 or above average required. Open to all classifications. Hawkins, Jesse James Memorial Endowed Scholarship Criteria require that a student be a campus-based full-time student, classified as a sophomore, junior, or senior with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above: must have spent at least one full semester at Jarvis if transferring from another college; must be a student of good moral character, active in religious and other recognized organizations on campus, excluding the choir; must be a member of the Christian Church (DOC) upon admission to Jarvis and must submit a brief autobiography as part of the application process. Hurdle, A.J. Legacy Award The A.J. Hurdle Legacy Award is a cash award given in memory of Andrew Jackson Hurdle, a former slave, who became a pioneer Disciple minister of the Christian Church and who was a strong advocate of education for over half a century. The annual award is available to any student currently enrolled, full time, during a regular semester, who meets the following criteria: Has high moral character, maintains a minimum grade-point average of C, participates regularly in the religious activities of the school, communicates well with others, and writes a letter to the Director applying for the award. Selection process for this award is as follows:

The Campus Minister and/or Director of Religious Life shall be the campus screening person(s), who will select the top three (3) candidates. The Top 3 candidates will write an essay of not more than 150 words on the subject: Why I feel I should be the recipient of the A.J. Hurdle Legacy Award. The essay will be sent to the Family Legacy Committee Chairperson. The Legacy Committee will accept essays no later than April 1, The Legacy Committee will make the final selection and notify the student and the Director by May 1. Jarvis Christian College Church Award The College Church Board selects recipients. Jarvis Christian College Women s Club Award The Women s Club makes selection. Kirkpatrick, William Endowed Scholarship Open to ministerial students. Citizenship, need and 2.50 or above average required. Open to all classifications. Lois Potter Scholarship for Disciple Students This scholarship is awarded to students who are members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.50 and verifiable membership in the Christian Church at least one (1) year. Other eligibility requirements include acceptance to the College, completion of a scholarship application and a commitment to serve in the Jarvis Christian College church. The award is open to all classifications and is renewable each academic year of full-time enrollment. Individual scholarship amounts will vary. Memorial Christian Church Scholarship Disciple students receive first preference with other denominations considered if no Disciple student meets criteria. Citizenship, need and 2.50 or above average required. Open to all classifications. North Texas Area Christian Women s Fellowship Scholarship (Formerly), Dallas Area Christian Women s Fellowship Scholarship) Individual scholarships are granted to students on the basis of scholastic attainment, need, citizenship, and church participation. Members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are given first preference. Northway Christian Church Endowed Award For students who are active in College Church. Citizenship, need and 2.50 or above average required. Open to all classifications. Shepherd of the Hills Christian Church Endowed Scholarship Students must be enrolled full time; have demonstrated academic achievement, with a minimum of 2.5 GPA based on a 4.0 system; and have demonstrated involvement in community social work and ministry. Texas Christian Missionary Fellowship Endowed Scholarship For Disciple students active in the College Church. Citizenship, need and 2.50 or above average required. Open to all classifications. Washington, Peter C. Endowed Award The Award is available to a junior or senior religion major who has completed at least one year of study at the College, has completed all general education requirements, has a verifiable commitment to a career in religious education, possesses a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (B) or better, and completes and submits the application materials for award. Application forms are available in the Office of Academic Affairs.

Winker Endowed Scholarship The award is designated for any Jarvis student who is an active member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at least six months prior to entering college. The recipient is required to have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA.
