Clarksburg High School 22500 Wims Road Clarksburg, MD 20871 Phone: 301-444-3070 Fax: 301-444-3595 Home of the Coyotes Dear Current and Future Clarksburg Instrumental Music Students and Parents, I hope that your spring has been great so far. Time flies when the weather is nice and before we know it, it will be time for summer marching band camp. The band staff is working hard to make sure we are set to hit the ground running. We hope to have a good turnout for the marching band this year we are looking forward to a great season, filled with fun, friendship, and musical excellence! BAND CAMP The dates and times for summer marching band camp are as follows any student wishing to participate who has a schedule conflict should email Mr. Orifici immediately: August 8 Forms and Fees Hand-In 6PM-8PM August 15,16,17,18,19 Summer Band Camp 9AM 4PM August 19 Band Yearbook Photos 2:00pm (subject to change) August 22,23,25 Evening Band Rehearsals 6PM-9PM August 26 Marine Corps Parade (Field trip) 5PM-11PM November 10 End-of-Season Banquet 6PM 9PM All marching band participants are expected to attend the summer band camp. This is a very important time, as students will learn not only fundamental marching and musical technique, but also components of the parade and field shows. Students should bring the following materials to band camp, every day: Instrument and pencil Music, flip folder, and drill book (students will receive these the first day of camp) A bag lunch A water bottle Sunscreen Sunglasses Sneakers (NO FLIP-FLOPS OR SANDALS!) IMPORTANT MARCHING BAND PARENT MEETING Any parents wishing to learn more about the marching band program may attend our final CHS OOMPAH music parents meeting on Thursday, June 13, at 7:00PM in the CHS Instrumental Music Room #136. In addition to discussing the program, we will be collecting registration papers and fees (checks only we won t have the credit card reader at this event) and having sign-ups for parent volunteer opportunities. It is expected that each student will have a parent volunteer for at least one pregame meal and one event this season. As in past years, we are asking parents to supplement the main meal with healthy side dishes, drinks and deserts. We know most parents work and getting these items to school for an early dinner can be a challenge, so we will give you the option to make a minimum $15 donation in lieu of a side dish which will be used to supplement meals. This is a great group of kids and I encourage you to get involved. The success of a program is directly related to the quality of parent support! Monday, August 8th we will hold a Forms and Fees Night from 6pm-8pm. This is another opportunity to pay fees, sign up to volunteer during the season, and ask questions from other band parents! (OVER )

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE Rehearsals for Marching Band once school starts will be Mondays, and Thursdays 6-9pm, and Fridays, 2:30-4:30pm. Percussion, Color Guard, and Majorettes may have additional sectional practices. Marching Band performances will be at home and away football games - generally Friday evenings. The complete football game schedule is in the calendar contained in this packet. COSTS/FEES These are the costs associated with participating in Marching Band. Please note that financial assistance is available financial concerns will not prevent a student from participating in the program. Contact Mr. Orifici at charles_a_orifici@mcpsmd.org or Ms. Rasmussen at treasurer@chsoompah.org to obtain the financial assistance form. There is a flat marching band fee of $200 for each member. This fee has two components: o Marching Band Fee of $145, which covers bus transportation to all band events, a marching band t-shirt, a flip folder and music, and the uniform cleaning fee. o Meals Fee of $55 which covers the main course for 10 pre-game meals. Additionally, new students will need to purchase new marching shoes for $30 and gloves for $3. Alternately, we have a limited number of lightly used pairs of shoes available for $15. New color guard members will need to purchase gloves for $15 and black stretch pants for $20. Majorette members will need to purchase shoes for $25. Percussionists will need to purchase sticks which can range from $12-$20. Information will be given once it has been determined who will be playing which drum. Additionally, optional Spiritwear (Jackets, t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, etc.) will be available for student and parent purchase this fall. Please note that a separate Marching Band End of Season Banquet RSVP signup and donation request will be sent closer to our November 10th banquet. We look forward to celebrating a great season with all of our families. All students are expected to have paid in full by August 15th. Fees may be paid by check at anytime (Made payable to CHS OOMPAH) or by credit card at the forms and fees night on August 8th. Please note that all credit card payments will incur an additional 2.75% of the total to cover processing fees. Payments can be made throughout the summer by contacting Michelle Rasmussen at treasurer@chsoompah.org. The Clarksburg High School Marching Band facebook group at facebook.com/groups/marchingbandchs and on twitter @MarchingBandCHS I am really looking forward to the upcoming marching band season and can t wait to see everybody on June 16th. In the meantime, find last year s flip folder, make sure your instrument is in good working order, and don t forget to practice over the summer! If you have any questions please email the director, Mr. Orifici, at charles_a_orifici@mcpsmd.org. Sincerely, Mr. Orifici Clarksburg High School

Physical Demands The Marching Band activity is much like a sport as it relates to the physical demands placed on each student. Like most for most athletic activities, all band members need to be in good health. Though we do not want to eliminate anyone from participating, we are on our feet all rehearsal, (except for breaks) outside in HOT temperatures and can march up to a mile or more at each rehearsal. If you have had issues with the knee, foot, or ankle, or with asthma or fatigue, marching band can be a difficult activity. Behavior The Clarksburg High School Marching Band is a voluntary group. The expectation is that everyone who participates in the marching band wants to be there and must be there. We are one of the larger and more visible student groups on campus. Thus, our behavior both on and off the field needs to be exemplary. Improper rehearsal etiquette/behavior could result in your dismissal from the marching band. Improper behavior during school could also result in your dismissal from the marching band. If you are dismissed from the marching band, you are still responsible for all band fees. Dismissal infractions include (but are not limited to): After school detention, disrupting rehearsal, any UNEXCUSED band absences, any UNEXCUSED performance absence, academic class failures, verbal or physical bullying, suspension or expulsion from school. Communication The Marching Band schedule with regards to Band Camp, after-school rehearsals, football games, and parade/competition dates has been set. This is almost 5 months in advance. All personal conflicts should be rescheduled, if possible. Please contact Mr. Orifici ASAP if there is a conflict that may cause you to miss a rehearsal or performance. Waiting until the day before (or day of) could result in your dismissal from the marching band. Commitment I am committed to being a member of the Clarksburg High School Marching Band for the upcoming season. Submitting this form by June 16 shows that I understand that I must attend the summer band camp and evening rehearsals in August, along with all practices and performances associated with the marching band (see marching band schedule). Furthermore, I understand that by filling out this form, I am committed not only to the marching band regular season, but also to all commitments associated with the band through the football postseason. I will also abide by all policies set forth by The Clarksburg High School Band Program, Clarksburg High School and Montgomery County Public Schools. I have read the above agreement and agree to this commitment. Student signature Parent signature date date
