Undergraduate Student Members: 1 Laura Schultz 2 Armin Vosough 3 Keitaro Kamiya 4 Makeda Cyrus 5 Christina Pinto 6 Luke Li 7 Adrian Yee 8 Kim Nguyen COMMUNTIY OUTREACH ACTIVITY PROGRAMS: Technology, Engineering and Computing (TEC) Camp: Every year the Women in Engineering (WIE) at Georgia Institute of Technology sponsors a week long Technology, Engineering & Computing (TEC) Camp for middle school girls on campus. This year, the camp took place between June 14 and June 18, 2010. For the second time in a row, GT EERI was asked to develop an activity about civil engineering each day of the camp. EERI members Jazalyn Dukes and Niki Fanouraki once again took charge of coordination of activities for this event. EERI Chapter chose to highlight several civil engineering topics, which include structural engineering, earthquake engineering, water resources engineering, and geotechnical engineering. Through the participation of over 15 other EERI members and other volunteers, the girls learned fundamentals in bridge design, water flow principles, earthquakee design principles and geotechnical design principles. The Chapter hopes to participate in the same activity in 2011. North Springs High School Visit: This year, GT EERI was invited to give a lecture on civil engineering topics to a class of high school juniors and seniors interested in engineering on November 9 th, 2010. Four EERI members gave a presentation on the different types of engineering, with a focus on earthquakes and structural engineering. Then, we guided them through an activity building towers of K nex pieces to construct systems that would perform differently under earthquake loads. The students really enjoyed the information and activity, and we that they gained a better understanding of the possibilities in a career in civil engineering. Ask a Scientist Day at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History: Every year Fernbank Museum hosts an annual Ask a Scientist Day (formerly Scout Day), where activities are provided for Cub and Girl Scouts, as well as the general public. For the last several years local community scientists and science enthusiasts in the area are invited to the event. Many of the scout badges require them to meet someone in the field, and this provided an inspiring opportunity for our Chapter to spread some awareness about earthquakes and their mitigation. Held on November 13 th, 2010, five EERI volunteers performed demonstrations on the shake-table of structural performance of a model building several times to the many people who attended the event. The students and parents had a lot of fun and were active participants with many questions. It was a successful event that provided a stimulating and positive learning experience, as well as encouraged the students to pursue higher education. EERI ANNUAL MEETING: The 62 nd EERI Annual Meeting was held in San Francisco, CA in February 2010. Timothy Wright represented the Georgia Tech EERI chapter by presenting a poster on the previous year s chapter activities.

SEMINARS AND GUEST LECTURES: Seminar Dr. Reginald DesRoches, Georgia Institute of Technology: Dr. Reginald DesRoches, Professor and Associate Chair with the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech will present a talk titled The 2010 Haiti Earthquake: Reconnaissance Work. The seminar will be co-hosted by the EERI student chapter and ASCE chapter. This was a very special seminar for GT EERI as it was the first time we teamed with ASCE and Chi Epsilon, and this lecture drew a large crowd of over 150 people who very interested in learning more about this devastating event. It was also the first time Dr. DesRoches had spoken on the topic, in which he has since done more with Haiti recovery and delivered many lectures worldwide, so it was an honor. EERI 2009 Distinguished Lecturer - Dr. Norman Abrahamson, Pacific Gas & Electric Company in San Francisco, CA: Dr. Norm Abrahamson of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company and EERI Distinguished Lecturer for 2009 was able to visit GT EERI to give his lecturee entitled State of Practice of Seismic Hazard Analysis: From the Good to the Bad. He gave this talk to an audience of EERI members and structures students, faculty and staff. It was an honor to have Dr. Abrahamson deliver this lecture to our chapter and school. EERI 2010 Distinguished Lecturer - Sharon Wood, University of Texas, Austin: We were very pleased that Dr. Sharon Wood was able to join us for a talk as part of her tour as EERI s distinguished lecturer of 2010. Her talk was entitled The Potential of Ubiquitous Sensing. Many students, faculty and staff attended this seminar to hear this distinguished lecture. Seminar Dr. Jamie Padgett, Rice University: Dr. Padgett, also a graduate of Georgia Tech, came to give a talk on her research at Rice University. The title of her talk was Vulnerability of Coastal Bridges under Hurricane Induced Loads. The seminar was attended well by members of EERI as well as people from the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. Seminar Dr. Roberto Leon, Georgia Institute of Technology: In light of the Chile earthquake of February 2010, Dr. Leon traveled with a reconnaissance team to the area to survey damage. It was our pleasure to invite him for a talk about what he witnessed in terms of structural damage and also the success of the seismic code employed in that country. The title of his talk was 2010 Chile Earthquake and the Behavior of Structures. This seminar was the second highest attended seminar of the semester, with members of EERI, students, staff and faculty of the department in the audience. Seminar Dr. Dominic Assimaki, Georgia Institute of Technology: Dr. Assimaki also went to Chile after the M8.8 Earthquake in 2010, but as a part of a geotechnical reconnaissance team. The title of her talk was Geotechnical Engineering Reconnaissance of the M8.8 Chile Earthquake, and many members of other departments within the University were in attendance of this lecture. Seminar Dr. Glenn Rix, Georgia Institute of Technology: Dr. Rix was a part of a geotechnical reconnaissance team to Haiti after the devastating earthquake there in January of 2010. He presented us with an insightful talk entitled Geotechnical Aspects of the M7.0 Haiti Earthquake. This lecture was also well attended by EERI members and members of the department. Seminar Dr. Yang Wang, Georgia Institute of Technology: Dr. Wang, a professor in the structure department of Georgia Tech, gave the first lecture of the fall semester with his talk entitled Wireless and Mobile Sensor Networks For Smart Civil Structures. This lecture highlighted structural health monitoring related to earthquake engineering.
Seminar Dr. Andrew Newman, Georgia Institute of Technology: Dr. Newman, of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech, gave a talk entitled Understanding the Recurrence, Size, and Energy Potential of Earthquakes. This lecture was unique as it was outside the realm of structural engineering, and on the topic of the science of earthquakes. Seminar Dr. Ioannis Brilakis, Georgia Institute of Technology: Dr. Brilakis, an assistant professor specializing in Construction Engineering in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech, gave an interesting talk about his research and experience in Haiti after the devastating earthquake. The talk was entitled Machine Vision-Based Condition Assessment of Structures Damaged By Earthquakes. Friedman Visiting Professional Stephanie King, Weidlinger Associates, Mountainn View, CA: Georgia Tech EERI Chapter was grateful to host Dr. Stephanie King of Weidlinger Associates as part of the Friedman Visiting Professional program. GT EERI hosted Dr. King by providing an itinerary of time to spend with graduate students, meetings with structural engineering faculty, as well as the lecture. Her talk was entitled Infrastructure Risk Assessment for Cost-Effective Mitigation Decisions, and was well received by EERI members, and structures students, faculty and staff in attendance. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: Every semester we try to incorporate some social activities for our members to meet outside of our seminars and volunteer activities. In March, 10 members got together to attend an NBA basketball game. Donations from our local sponsors allowed the chapter to sponsor this social activity, which brought together members who were from different academic backgrounds. In October, a group traveled to the Great Smoky Mountains for a camping trip. Again, this activity allowed members from different backgrounds to get to know each other outside of research and academics.
