Carroll County Board of Education Minutes of Board Meeting Midway Church October 19, 2017 The Carroll County Board of Education met in Executive Session in the Green Room #150 at Carroll County Schools Performing Art Center, 775 Old Newnan Rd., Carrollton, Ga. 30116 at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2017. The following members were present: Dr. Jon Anderson, Chair; Mrs. Sandra Morris, Vice Chair; Mr. Donald Nixon, Mr. Rob Cleveland, Mr. Bart Cater, and Mr. Clayton Kierbow. Dr. Robert Pinckney was absent. I. The Board voted to meet in Executive Session at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the future acquisition of real estate, personnel and pending or threatened litigation. Motion by Mrs. Sandra Morris, seconded by Mr. Rob Cleveland. The members were polled: II. The Board voted to exit Executive Session at 6:32 p.m. Motion by Mrs. Sandra Morris, seconded by Mr. Rob Cleveland. The members were polled: III. Motion by Mr. Rob Cleveland, seconded by Mr. Clayton Kierbow, to approve the personnel recommendations as presented by the Superintendent. The members were polled: IV. Dr. Jon Anderson called the Public Meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. The Carroll County Board of Education met at the Carroll County Schools Performing Art Center, 775 Old Newnan Rd., Carrollton, Ga. 30116 at 6:32 p.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2017. The following members were present: Dr. Jon Anderson, Chair; Mrs. Sandra Morris, Vice Chair; Mr. Donald Nixon, Mr. Rob Cleveland, Mr. Bart Cater, and Mr. Clayton Kierbow. Dr. Robert Pinckney was absent. I. The meeting was opened with the pledge of allegiance to the flag and the invocation by Dr. Jon Anderson. Dr. Jon Anderson welcomed the visitors. The hosts for the Board Meeting were: Mrs. Colleen Jones, Assistant Principal at Central High School and Mrs. Lorie Teal, Principal at Bowdon Elementary School. II. Dr. Christi Teal, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources & Student Services, and Mr. Scott K. Cowart, Superintendent, recognized the 2019 Carroll County Teachers of the Year (see attached list).
Sponsors for the Teacher of the Year Recognition were announced by Dr. Christi Teal: PAGE, J & R Construction & Development, Inc., Southern A & E, American Pie Pizzeria, 4 AM Coffee Roasters, Mountain Oak Florist & Gifts, Southern Sales & Marketing, West Georgia Ambulance, Southwire, Smith s Floor Covering, Chick-fil-A, Ozier Apparel, Georgia Association of Educators, Almon Funeral Home, Whorton Insurance Agency, Rollins Automotive, Smith Floor Covering, Inc. and catering by Debra Gibbs. The Ithica Elementary School Chorus performed. Judges for the Teacher of the Year were announced by Dr. Christi Teal: Mrs. Susan Hale, Commercial Support Manager with Bank of North Georgia; Dr. Jill Drake at the Department of Early Childhood through Secondary Education with the University of West Georgia; and Ms. Kim Jones with the Community Foundation of West Georgia. Dr. Teal announced the FY19 Teacher of the Year for each school and Mr. Cowart presented each teacher with a certificate and each received a recognition gift. The two runners up were named and recognized: second runner-up, Mr. Eric Fussell of Mt. Zion Middle School, and first runner-up, Ms. Jessica Bohlen of Temple High School. Ms. Angela Little of Villa Rica Middle School was recognized as the 2019 Carroll County Schools Teacher of the Year. III. Mr. Terry S. Jones, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative & Support Services, and Mr. Scott K. Cowart, Superintendent, recognized the Highest Student Attendance awards for month two. The schools with the highest attendance for month 2 were Group Teaching: Providence Elementary School, Group Learning: Villa Rica Elementary School and Group Leading: Ithica Elementary School. Each school was presented a certificate. IV. Dr. Dana Harman, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, and Mr. Scott K. Cowart, Superintendent, recognized the following (see attached). 2017-18 All-State Girls Golf Team 2017 Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award V. Motion by Mrs. Sandra Morris, seconded by Mr. Donald Nixon to approve the agenda. The members were polled: VI. VII. There was no public input. Motion by Mr. Clayton Kierbow, seconded by Mr. Rob Cleveland, to approve the minutes as recommended by Superintendent Scott K. Cowart for the Minutes of Board Meeting on September 21, 2017 and Work Session on October 16, 2017. The members were polled: VIII. In his monthly report, Superintendent Scott K. Cowart spoke on the following: WES will be presented with a STEM School of Excellence Award on November 3. Carroll County South CCA Hosted its Business & Community Day on October 4. MZHS Eagles Football Team was named the High 5 Sports Team of the Week. VRH and CHS Chorus programs held concerts at the Performing Arts Center. Carroll County Schools celebrated Georgia Pre-K Week on October 2. Carroll County Schools celebrated School Nutrition Week on the week of October 9. Carroll County Schools will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week the week of October 23. Upcoming events. X.
