Need One of Uganda s poorest areas Mass unemployment and poverty amongst communities Action & Result Educated 120 farmers to manufacture banana chips empowering them to increase income greatly whilst relying on a plentiful and sustainable resource. Vision By the end of July we aim to have products on sale in three supermarkets around the Mukono District. UNITE UGANDA 120 Empowered through Workshops Need Re-Cycle are a struggling UK charity in need of a new source of income due to government cutbacks In need of a sustainable source of bikes In need of advertising and operation consultancy Action & Result We have created a bike collection point in Guildford, arranged for free storage of donated bikes, which has collected 48 bikes so far for the charity and assisted in marketing for the charity. Vision Our long-term goal is to help set up further collection points in Guildford and London and to develop accessible water purifying technology based on cycle-power; a process we have already started with our Engineering department through a design competition. wheel power Free Storage negotiated for Donated Bikes 48 Bikes Donated
>oakleaf One in four people in the UK suffer from a mental illness each year, with some left unemployed. We have been working with a Guildford based charity to help their clients get back into employment. Need Clients are out of work and struggle to find employment opportunities They lack basic soft skills, self confidence and social communication Lack of income, they are dependent on benefits Action We created a programme of workshops delivering basic numeracy and literacy skills and developed their job application skills. We used our House of Opportunity model to plan our work with the clients (see right). Results Through our workshops and contacts, we empowered three of our clients to gain work experience in a local cafe, one has been offered a job. The remaining clients are currently in the application process. Vision Our clear vision for this project is to set up a social enterprise which can provide employment for the clients. IBM have recognised the work we have done so far, and are starting to support us with workshops for the clients over the next few months. 7 Empowered 3Gained Work Experience 1Job Offered IBM Support for Social Enterprise T h c s
Full Time Employment Work Experience House of Opportunity We developed a model which applies to clients we work with. Business Skills Basic Numerical & Literacy Skills Tony (left) is one of the clients we worked with. He suffered from depression and found himself unable to get back into the workplace. We worked with him to improve his confidence, and ultimately empowered him to get work experience in a local cafe over summer and a conditional job offer.
RICycle Thailand C F Following Thailand s devastation from flooding in 2011, we saw the opportunity to turn this disaster around and allow the Thai farmers affected to develop a strong, resilient and sustainable secondary source of income Need Rice crop destroyed Farmers lost their sole source of income, thus leaving them with no apparent means to earn Families forced apart in search of work Action We were able to develop a use for the waste product of rice, husk (the outer shell). Instead of burning it, we taught the villagers through a series of workshops how to use it as a pillow stuffing. Not only does this have environmental benefits, but because the rice husk can be used even if the crop is destroyed, it guarantees a secondary source of income. Result So far the co-operative has been able to sell 30 pillows, which has not only given income to those who lost it due to flooding, but increased income for those still earning by almost 23% over a six week period. Vision We have established a relationship with one of the largest NGOs in Thailand, called BREAD (Business for Rural Education and Development), and with their help will develop stronger distribution channels to Bangkok over the next few months, to increase the project s sustainability. Up to 23% Increase in Income 30 Pillows Sold Already Revenue Generated: 300 F t h c
Creating Opportunity From Disaster Families had been forced apart due to the flooding, with men travelling to the cities to find work. This leaves families and communities devastated, however with a secondary source of income from pillow manufacturing communities are able to stay together.
A Strong Team in a Sustainable Position A key target for SIFE Surrey this year has been ensuring our team sustainbility is maximised. Through our Business Advisory Board we have been able to develop workshops to enhance the experience of our team members and in turn enhance our project quality. With nearly two thirds of our members currently in first year, we are in a sustainble position to move forward without a loss of momentum. Key focuses for SIFE Surrey this year have been Recruiting predominantly first year students for team sustainability Developing the skills of our team Building our support network (growing advisory board and relationship with university) To increase our share of finances from entrepreneurial activities 2011/2012 Revenue Breakdown SIFE Surrey s Networking & Showcase Evening, March 2012 Ins$tu$onal Support 145.00 Business Advisory Board (BAB) 100.00 Team Entrepreneurial Ac$vi$es 2601.28 In Kind Dona$ons 50.00 President: Matt Burton Last Year's Balance 1694.69 University Advisor: Nigel Biggs Other 10530.00 Union VP Societies: Jake Willis UNIVERSITY OF SURREY
