As the semester winds down, it is important for UT Parents & Families to provide encouragement and support to their student(s) in preparation for final exams. Final exams and projects can prove to be a very stressful time for students, particularly students who are experiencing final exams for the first time in college. Here are some helpful tips to offer your student(s): Utilize the Learning Enhancement Center (LEC) tutoring facility in Carlson Library Utilize the Writing Center in Carlson Library for assistance with papers/projects Utilize the Counseling Center in Rocket Hall they offer stress management workshops (free!) Get plenty of rest, exercise at the Rec Center, and eat healthy foods Attend optional study or review sessions professors may offer Communicate with professors and visit office hours regarding questions/concerns Re-read course notes, textbooks, and other materials Review class material over a period of time; don t cram the night before Final Exam Week: December 10-14, 2012 Helpful Articles for Families When College Kids Come Home for the Winter Break, Stress and Tension can Mount by Neil Schoenherr, Washington University in St. Louis When college students return home for their winter break, it can be an adjustment

for the entire family. While parents may have preconceived ideas about how the family will spend the holidays, students are anxious to try out their newfound independence. The winter break is the first extended time at home for most freshmen since they left for college in the summer, says Karen Levin Coburn, associate vice chancellor for students and dean of the freshman transition at Washington University in St. Louis. The first semester at college may have been their first glimpse of freedom. They wonder if it is possible to go home and still maintain their newfound independence. Don t be alarmed if students come home exhausted from the stress of taking final exams. If there are siblings at home, the family has to reconfigure. Be prepared to discuss money issues openly. Don t be surprised if time is a potentially explosive topic. Conversations between parents and students are essential and can be extremely rewarding. Make plans early. Refrain from doing everything for your student. Help foster independence in your student.
