Claflin University Alumni Reunion Weekend November 15-18, 2018 A Message From The Office of Alumni Relations Greetings, It is indeed a pleasure for me to welcome you to our 2018 Homecoming festivities. In 1869, Claflin University was established to provide a high-quality of academic preparation for all students without regard to gender, race, religion, or ethnic origin. This homecoming, we are celebrating more than 149 years of producing graduates who represent Claflin in leadership positions in business and industry, education, government, performing and visual arts, science and technology, and other professions. Through the dynamic leadership of our eighth president, Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, Claflin has boldly entered the 21st Century poised to embrace the opportunities and challenges of the 21st Century. A record enrollment of more than 2,100 including more than 500 freshmen affirm Claflin s growing reputation as one of the nation s premier liberal arts institutions. Zelda M. Lee This year s theme reflects the institution s vision of becoming a leading undergraduate teaching and research university. Recent national rankings such as Claflin earning the top spot in Alumni Giving Percentage among the nation s HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities) by U.S. News and World Report; placing in the Top 10 among the nation s leading HBCUs by U.S. News and World Report; and College Choice listing Claflin in its Top 10 among the 25 Best Colleges in South Carolina, further illustrates Claflin s upward trajectory toward reaching this goal. Returning alumni and visitors to the campus will also take notice of the well-manicured landscape and the collegial environment of the campus, which garnered Claflin its Top 10 ranking among the most beautiful HBCU campuses in the nation by Black Southern Belle magazine. We are extremely proud of the University s accomplishments. However, it has been the collective contributions of our Board of Trustees, Board of Visitors, administrators, alumni, faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders who made it possible. New initiatives, including the Signature Event fundraisers hosted by individual alumni chapters and the Claflin University International Alumni Association, have been successful in raising a minimum of $10,000 to support scholarships. This event is another example of the alumni s unwavering advocacy and its mission to provide funding that helps Claflin attract and retain high-achieving scholars. However, more work lies ahead. We want to continue producing engaged visionary leaders at Claflin University so we are asking alumni and other friends of Claflin to make a minimum gift or pledge of $149 $1 for each year of Claflin s existence to support scholarships during 2018 Homecoming. Please remember no donation is too small or too large and all gifts are welcome. I look forward to seeing you soon at the place where it all began - Claflin University. Sincerely, Zelda M. Lee, 77 Director of the Annual Fund and Alumni Relations 2 Claflin Alumni Reunion and Homecoming Weekend
