A Transformational Leadership Experience for First-Gen High School Students The National Student Leadership Congress is an intensive 6-day leadership experience in our nation's capital for first-generation high school students from TRIO programs across the United States and territories. The 30th Annual National Student Leadership Congress will be hosted at Georgetown University and will include: a Mock Congress Competition, Diversity and Inclusion Training, Interactive Learning Lab, Monument Tour, and a day on Capitol Hill About National Student Leadership Congress Purpose To establish a national network of emerging leaders To develop serviceoriented leaders, empowered and skilled to serve their communities and their nation. To enable students to understand national issues affecting their futures To promote sensitivity to and appreciation for cultural and racial diversity Program A 6-day residential experience designed to introduce students to elements of effective leadership Workshops on decision-making and problem solving; national service, leadership styles, attributes and skills; the political process and coalition building; multiculturalism and diversity Sessions with policy-makers TRIO alumni Meetings with Members of Congress and a Mock Congressional Hearing Visits to historical and cultural sites in Washington, DC. Outcomes Increased awareness of leadership potential Enhanced leadership skills in decision making, planning, and goal setting; conflict resolution and negotiating Greater knowledge of the role of individuals and alliances in shaping national priorities; and career opportunities in government, public service and education Increased understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship through service 2

A Transformational Leadership Experience for First-Gen High School Students We are seeking outstanding rising juniors and seniors (Class of 2020 and Class of 2021) to serve as delegates to the 2019 National Student Leadership Congress. Please select students who are ready for a challenging and intensive learning experience. It is important that student representatives come prepared for the rigors of a program that includes full schedules, requires open minds, and ensures leadership growth. Student Eligibility Rising Junior/Senior Class of 2020 Class of 2021 Minimum 3.0* GPA TRIO Talent Search Upward Bound Upward Bound Math/Science Only 180 Students will be accepted We aim to provide students from all states and American territories the opportunity to immerse themselves in a premier leadership experience, therefore, we will ONLY ACCEPT 6 STUDENTS PER INSTITUTION. Allowable Cost: The registration fee is $1,350 which includes housing, meals, admission fees for tours, NSLC t-shirts, and transportation while the student is in Washington D.C. Students must arrive in Washington, DC by no later than 4:00 PM on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at DCA AIRPORT or UNION STATION. The registration fee is an allowable project expense (OMB Circular A-21/A-122) *For student's that do not meet the GPA requirement but would benefit greatly from participating in NSLC, please contact fernando.cardenas@coenet.org 3

NSLC is open to all TRIO Talent Search, and Upward Bound, and Upward Bound Math/Science students who will be rising juniors or seniors during the summer of 2019. (Class of 2020 and Class of 2021) 2 Can TRIO Staff Participate in NSLC? Frequently Asked Questions 4 Student Arrival and Departure Student's that travel by plane must arrive ONLY at DCA Airport. Student's traveling by train must arrive ONLY at Union Station. Students that arrive by car must be dropped off at Georgetown University. All students must arrive in Washington, DC by 4:00 pm on Saturday, June 8, 2019. 5 What to Bring? Once a student is accepted, they will receive a checklist detailing all the items they need to bring with them to Washington, DC. 6 How to Register? In January the online registration portal will open that can be accessed by visiting http://coenet.org/student_opportunities.shtml NSLC is only available to TRIO high school students. TRIO staff that accompanies students to Washington, DC must provide for their own travel/lodging accommodations. 3 When will students be notified of acceptance? Once a nominated student has been accepted, the TRIO Director will receive an email with further information including all supplemental documents that students must submit by May 2019. 4
