WA VT MT WI SD WY NV NY MI PA IA NE IL UT SERVICES & EMPLOYMENT KEY FINDINGS NH MA RI CT NJ DE MN ID JOBS ACROSS AMERICA: ME ND OR OH IN WV CO CA KS AZ OK NM MO KY NC TN DC SC AR MS TX MD VA AL GA LA AK FL HI A MERICA depends on services for economic growth and jobs. generate more than 75 percent of national economic output and empower the economy. Regardless of the type of activity, it only gets done with the support of an array of services, such as accounting and finance, computer-related services, energy, express delivery and logistics, insurance, media and entertainment, retail and wholesale, technology, and telecommunications. A new report by the Coalition of Industries reveals that services jobs dominate the American economy. Visit servicescoalition.org/jobs for the full report, including data on services and employment for all 50 states and every U.S. congressional district. More than three-quarters of all working Americans are employed by the services sector, as compared to agriculture (2 percent), construction (6 percent), government (5 percent), and manufacturing (10 percent). In every state, services employ 70 percent or more of the labor force. In each congressional district, more than 60 percent of the labor force works in services. Education, healthcare, and professional, scientific, and management services are the country s top services employers. Transportation, warehousing, finance, insurance, and real estate also are significant services employers. Florida, Nevada, and New York have the highest percentages of services employment (82 percent). In Indiana and Wisconsin, the states with the highest percentages of manufacturing employment (18 percent), services jobs are more than triple. In other traditional manufacturing states, such as Michigan, Ohio, Arkansas, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Texas, and New Jersey, services employment is more than 4 times that of manufacturing, and in some states considerably greater. In North Dakota and Wyoming, the states with the highest percentages of agricultural employment (11 percent and 9 percent, respectively), services jobs are more than 6 times greater. In other traditional agricultural states, such as Montana, North and South Dakota, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, California, Georgia, and Illinois, services employment is more than 10 times that of agriculture, and in some states considerably greater. Methodology The report was compiled using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The findings are based on 2011 figures, the latest year for which data is available. The congressional-level analysis corresponds to the districts for that year (112th Congress). For more information contact Olivia Burzynska-Hernandez at 202-289-7460 or burzynska@uscsi.org or visit servicescoalition.org/jobs.
