st. louis needs to rebuild Our economic development strategy has long since relied on our ability to attract large employers to relocate to the St. Louis region. Often slow and unsuccessful, we ve relied too heavily on this process to attract a talented workforce. Alternatively, many local champions have begun to use startups as a vehicle to drive job growth by building the next generation of businesses from the ground up. in order to succeed, st. louis needs to do more. how to build a tech ecosystem St. Louis must attract 1 and retain top-tier talent for high-growth companies. This includes engineers, designers, marketing and sales professionals, as well as hardworking founders. We must invest in methods that train and improve our pool of startup talent. Startup communities 2 are not built on ideas alone. By growing a thriving culture of hackers and builders (which is the prime goal of hackathons), more entrepreneurs will move past their initial ideas and concepts to create startup companies of their own. Entpreneurs build better 3 together. By providing both physical (meetups and co-working spaces) and digital spaces (chat groups/ forums) for them to meet and interact, it will be easier for them to find co-founders, freelancers, and other talent for their ventures. why do product-first cultures matter? The largest gap in the entrepreneurial process is going from an idea to a product. Increasing the number of founders that cross this stage will increase the number of viable startups in the ecosystem. idea prototype production iterate grow exit 8 // GLOBALHACK 2015 ANNUAL REPORT GLOBALHACK 2015 ANNUAL REPORT // 9

our mission GlobalHack is building a better tech ecosystem through hackathons (coding competitions). Our events bring together developers, designers, and other innovative individuals to solve realworld, civic-minded problems. ideas to prototypes in 48 hours. We launched GlobalHack in late 2013 following frustration with the focus on business plan competitions and mentoring programs that failed to help entrepreneurs turn ideas into actual products. Through our first five hackathons, more than 117 functional prototypes have been built. As a result, the Intellectual Property of several of these technologies have been acquired and brought to market by startups and corporations alike. With an added focus on younger coders, our participants now span across Youth, High School, College, and Professional divisions. Starting with GlobalHack V, our first civic hackathon, we sought to better our impact on the community by shifting our focus from corporate to civic projects. 10 // GLOBALHACK 2015 ANNUAL REPORT GLOBALHACK 2015 ANNUAL REPORT // 11

GLOBALHACK PROJECTS GH I TopOpps challenged participants to build an application on top of the Salesforce platform that uses big data analytics to forecast sales and allow a VP of Sales to easily score and rank sales opportunities. THE GLOBALHACK PROCESS GlobalHack is making the St. Louis tech community better through civic-minded hackathons. Our events bring together software engineers, designers, and other innovative individuals to solve real-world civic problems in our community. Our events last 48 hours from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. On Friday, we host our open ceremonies where introduce our sponsors and the challenge details. At our Opening Ceremony, sponsors are thanked and we announce the problem teams will be working to solve during the hackathon. Teams can either be formed in advance or during the event. Team sizes range from 2 to 10 members, and remote workers are not allowed. Teams are allowed to work at the venue throughout the hackathon (even overnight), often getting little to no sleep during the process. Meals, drinks, and plenty of snacks are provided during the entire weekend, in addition other supplies like whiteboards and power strips. On Sunday, teams must submit their final protoypes to a team of judges who help determine the winners. At our Closing Ceremony, a select group of final teams are asked to present their demos publicly. At the end of the hackathon, cash prizes (see above) are awarded to the top teams. GH II GH III GH IV OGSystems asked participants to build software that could allow domain experts without coding experience to develop applications that could automatically process dynamic data feeds to provide insights into global economic, political, and humanitarian issues. Hosted at UMSL, Emerson Climate Technologies asked teams to build an innovative application for their smart thermostat called Sensi. LockerDome had participants develop new and innovative tools to increase user interaction and improve content delivery for their social media engagement platform. Students, members of the community, entrepreneurs, seasoned developers you get a large and interesting group of people who work on solving real problems. Overall, it was a super fun experience and totally worth the lost hours of sleep!" Bill MacMillan, GlobalHack III Winner GH V GlobalHack teams worked together with the Civic Tech for Social Impact Collaborative, which include the St. Louis County, Rise Community Development, and OpenDataSTL, to create technology solutions to make it easier for people to navigate the St. Louis municipal court system. 12 // GLOBALHACK 2015 ANNUAL REPORT GLOBALHACK 2015 ANNUAL REPORT // 13

the world's best hackathons At GlobalHack, we take quality very seriously. We spend a ton of time developing relationships in the community (high schools, universities, tech meetup groups, co-working spaces, and mentoring organizations) in order to reach the region s top talent and and invite them to participate in our events. After every hackathon, we survey our participants and ask them what they enjoyed about the event and what they would like changed or added for future GlobalHack events. 77% of past attendees said they were likely or very likely to attend future GlobalHack hackathons. what was your favorite part of Globalhack? Spending a whole weekend in the company of really creative, talented people, and building something that really matters. While I competed with a group of friends, I met a lot of other professionals that had a huge variety of skills. I learned a ton. Getting to work with a group of people on a project from start to finish. Even if your team doesn t win, it s still fun to build software that accomplishes a goal. 14 // GLOBALHACK 2015 ANNUAL REPORT GLOBALHACK 2015 ANNUAL REPORT // 15
