CHEP APRIL/MAY 2017 NEWSLETTER All Sites PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM FIELD TRIP Los Angeles, CA Wednesday, May 17 Fees: $2.00 - student; $8.00 - adult We have a great opportunity for a field trip to the Petersen Museum which is world renowned for its collections of vintage and current automobiles. We have three gradespecific group lessons planned: Kids on the Move for the TK-2nd grades- using a blend of science based hands-on activities students will gain a deeper understanding of how cars work and how transportation has changed over time; Made in L.A. for the 3rd-6th graders where students will explore the history of Los Angeles through the lens of car culture and design a car on an ipad; Driven by Design for the 7th and 8th graders where students will learn about innovation and the design process of car design. Each group is limited to 25 students. We have the opportunity for a bus to take us on this trip. The bus can accommodate 50 people so it will fill fast. The museum is located near the LACMA and the LA Brea Tar pits so if you want to drive yourself and visit other venues there will be a parking charge in addition to the entrance fee. Students will have an opportunity to have their photographs taken by Lifetouch Photography. We use Lifetouch for our annual school pictures, and parents are consistently pleased. Please note that Lifetouch does not accept credit cards; please bring a check or cash for payment. If your child would like to be photographed, please plan on arriving early but not before 2:30 p.m. Prices for picture packets begin at $14.00. Mark your calendars now for this special ceremony in honor of our eighth graders. All families of eighth graders will receive a letter of invitation in May with the necessary details. Celebrate this exciting milestone!

In the past, students have worked on projects in engineering, chemistry, astronomy, aeronautics and programming. Come join us at the end of Month #1 for this wonderful opportunity. Sign up begins on OMS May 1 st, 2017. http://ocde.k12oms.org/1871-130530 Team America Rocketry Competition (TARC 2.0) Summer Session 6-8 th grade Facillitator: Miss Kazmark from CHEP West Dates Aug 7-9 9:30-12:30pm Cost:Free Brng a water bottle and small snack and may need sunscreen. TARC 2.0 is a special opportunity for your child to learn the principals of flight, aerodynamics, and propulsion using computer assisted design software to design and build a rocket to meet specific guidelines to compete with teams across the US toward competition in Washington DC. The TARC summer session is meant to give new students a taste of rocketry to see if it is something they want to commit to for the 17/18 school year. There is no requirement to be in TARC during the school year, nor will everyone who attends the summer class be guaranteed a place on the school year team.
