Introduction Konza Technopolis (KT) is a key flagship project of Kenya s Vision 2030 economic development pillar whose establishment is envisioned to create a world-class smart city and area of innovation. Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) is the implementing agency under the Ministry of Information Communications and Technology (MoICT). Konza has an important role in Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) realm to enhance utilization of the contemporary scientific revolution in improving production and productivity in all sectors. Vision: To be a global technology and innovation hub Mission: To develop a sustainable smart city and an innovation ecosystem, contributing to Kenya s Knowledge-based economy Konza Vision 2030 Objectives It is a vision 2030 project with below objectives: To position Kenya as a knowledge based economy and a preferred ST&I destination To foster the growth of the technology industry in Kenya To generate 17,000 direct jobs at the end of phase 1 and have 200,000 residents in the Technopolis at the end of 2030 To be a sustainable, world-class technology hub and a major economic driver for the nation, with a vibrant mix of businesses, workers, residents, and urban amenities To develop world class infrastructure and technology to facilitate research, education and business through Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES), engineering and life sciences To attract wide-spread investment from both local and international entities to establish themselves in the new smart city

Konza seeks to contribute to the consolidation and harmonization of innovation efforts by supporting the creation of a vibrant Innovation Ecosystem Our focus Pillar 1 Pillar 2 Technopolis Infrastructure & services Knowledge economy and innovation Challenges Commercialization of research/ inventions Solution Disjointed efforts in the space due to an uncoordinated innovation pipeline The components of the pillar are: Universities R&D centers and Pre-incubation facilities Research centers of Excellence Incubation centers/labs Acceleration centers /labs Collaboration bridge between education, research and enterprise/business KoTDA is pursuing four key areas of STEM, innovation, direct investment in technology and smart urban planning. Ultimately Konza has the function of: Increasing the number of highly qualified graduates in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and promoting education in the field through establishment of specialized schools, colleges and universities Promoting SME growth in the Science Technology and Innovation (STI) sector through development of an innovation ecosystem Attraction of direct investment in technology in form of technology companies and R&D divisions of companies setting up at Konza Technopolis Smart city development through innovative urban planning and ICT driven (smart city) infrastructure

Knowledge Economy and Innovation Scope and, Program components Konza is developing an innovation Ecosystem through the physical space as well as bringing together the various stakeholders within the industry to support the commercialization of research findings and the development of new solutions and enterprises. To ensure that the key players in the Technopolis are involved in it s development and meets government, academia, community/civil society and industry needs, KoTDA is developing a Quadruple Helix initiative for institutions interested in shaping the direction of Konza. This will focus in three key clusters namely; ICT/ ITES Information, Communication and Technology & Information Technology Enabled Services (ICT/ITES). Is one of the fastest growing sectors with a high potential for job creation. L Life Sciences; Will provide an enabling environment for scientific breakthroughs related to bioscience and new ways of working with health providers and industry. E Engineering. This is a super cluster that encompasses energy, water, material sciences, electronics and related activities. The initiative seeks partner to build assets, which includes and not limited to the following; Enterprise: a. Startup: Fast tracking startups through the business lifecycle, through a framework of startups acceleration process b. Creative Economy explore the possibities within the creative industries for job and wealth creation of offering, support in access to the potentials of digital and online businesses. BIG 4 Agenda: a) Innovation and commercialization of research findings in health care, housing, manufacturing and food security b) Konza will partner in initiating programs seeking to move agriculture from subsistence activity to a highly automated and technology driven activity Virtual Science and Technology Park : It will deliver the entire STP ecosystem online through a single national collaboration platform Internet of Things (IoT and Big Data): This will allow Konza to leverage big data for innovation purposes by its partner organizations. It will support with utilization of the National deployed Infrustructure to share knowledge in a secure platform. The Innovation Forum: Have a focal point to voice the innovation challenges and influence policies that will support a thriving innovation space. The forum will bring together the quadruple helix players namely; Academia, Industry, Government, community/civil society

We cannot do it alone Structure of Initiative The initiative will have a governance structure made of representatives drawn from the member organizations, government regulatory and policy bodies and Konza as the Secretariat. Assembly of members Membership Categories There will be different levels of membership depending on their contribution and role in the ecosystem namely; BUILDING KENYA S Platinum Partner: One off membership fees KES.5M with annual subscription of KES 500K Government Agencies Gold Partner: One off membership fees KES.3M with annual subscription of KES 300K Academia Partnership category: Access to Academia Silver Partner: One off membership fees KES.2M with annual subscription of KES 200K Bronze Partner: One off membership fees KES.1M with annual subscription of KES 100K Council of Advisors In order to gain from industry leaders and captains in the innovation space and ICT/ITES, Life Sciences and Engineering fields, the members shall appoint a council of advisors to help steer the initiative s vision. Secretariat A secretariat run by KoTDA shall be in charge of the day-to-day activities of the initiative. The Secretariat shall give periodic reports to the membership on activities of the initiative, financial status, new programmes and progress reports on on-going programmes.
