Lodge Chief s Talking Feather A Heartfelt Welcome, Recently, I was given the opportunity to reflect on quite a few things. Included in those musings were the Scout Oath, The Scout Law, and my Ordeal four years ago. I recall that I never gave too much thought to what happened at my Ordeal, as I enjoyed my Brotherhood induction more, but what happens at an Ordeal is incredibly important. In the Pre-Ordeal ceremony, Kichkinet reminds us that This Ordeal is but a shadow of the rigors of the journey. Upon completion of the Ordeal, Allowat Sakima reminds us that our membership is granted Not only for what you have done, but for what you are expected to do. He also reminds us that the Ordeal is not the conclusion of a journey, but rather the beginning of one. These particular lines spoke to me quite a lot as I remembered that my work as a Scout and as an Arrowman is never done. I know that I find myself slipping, from time to time, into the habit of not remembering the Scout Oath and Law or the ideals of the Order of the Arrow in my daily behavior. I think we all need to take some time in the near futures, whether that be at our Chapter Ordeals, Summer Camp, or just a day in your life, and set aside a few hours for reflection upon the Scout Oath and Law and the ideals of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service. As Arrowmen, we have all promised to live up to these ideals, and that is a journey that can only be completed with constant reflection. Take some time to get your bearings and remember the ideals that form the basis of our Brotherhood. I think you ll find it worthwhile. Robby Kile 2014 Lodge Chief Welcome, my Brothers, to Boy Scout s National Honor Society. You have been elected by your fellow Scouts because they look to you for experience and guidance. You have proven your worthiness by serving others during self sacrifice. For these reasons you may proudly wear the tokens of our service fraternity. With the Ordeal behind you, you are entitled to all the benefits and recognitions shared by Arrowmen throughout the country. This is but the beginning of a new Scouting Trail. An honorable trail, filled with opportunities to serve others within Scouting as well as the community. As an Arrowman, I urge you to be a beacon of selfless service to others. Please be mindful that others will judge our Order by your actions and the service opportunities that you eagerly undertake and those that you do not. In service to others, you are not alone. We are a fraternity, a brotherhood. As one, we are one. Look to your Brothers in the Order of the Arrow for strength and guidance when you feel tired and challenged. Many we are strong. The Order of the Arrow is not just about service. There are also many opportunities for fun and fellowship along with valuable leadership training for your growth within Scouting and later in life. We look forward to seeing you at various Lodge gatherings. These weekends also provide a unique opportunity for you to meet others outside of your unit. This allows you to gather knowledge and wisdom from a large and diverse group from across Indiana and nationally. Oh, and we tend to have a great deal of fun as well. In addition to Lodge events, you are now welcome to participate in Section Conclave and the National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC). Sections Conclave occurs annually in April and offers broader exposure to Scouting and leadership by Arrowmen from throughout the Midwest region. The 2015 Conclave will be one not to miss as it will be hosted by our lodge and held at Camp Belzer. NOAC is customarily held every two years. It has a National Jamboree feel and in 2015 and may be the Continued on Page 4 Page 3

A Conversation with J.T. Bruhn about Section Conclave His favorite part of this entire weekend was seeing and meeting bunches of Arrowmen that he has never met before. Section Conclave is a fun event where Arrowmen from all over get a chance to interact with others and section and region offices and is also a great opportunity for a lot of fun and a lot of learning. Some of the events throughout the weekend included open bowling, a pool for swimming, an obstacle course, and scavenger hunts. I had the chance to become trained in how to plan a conclave or other scouting event and also went to training on what it means to be an Arrowman in the 21st century. He also got to meet and talk to all of the section and region officers. J.T. says that if you haven t been to a conclave before, then you should definitely go to one soon and be sure not to miss NOAC 2015! Adviser s Corner Continued from Page 3 biggest ever as we celebrate the 100 th year anniversary of the Order of the Arrow. Another event you will not want to miss. Ask any Arrowman that has been to a NOAC and I am sure you will hear that it is a Scouting memory worth acquiring. I look forward to experiencing it with you in 2015 at Michigan State University. To all my Brothers in Jaccos Towne Lodge, I task each of you to welcome our newest Arrowmen and see that they are able to experience all that the Order has meant to so many honored campers over the past 100 years. Again, and in closing, welcome to each of the new Arrowmen of 2014. With our full support and guidance, go forth and serve.
