AORN Richmond Area 4702 www.richmondaorn.org Sharp Lines Spring 2012, Issue 8 President s Message Communication Quality Innovation Collaboration Officers President Debbie Martin MSN/ED, RN, CNOR Wow! The year has flown by and much has been accomplished. While our membership numbers have dropped slightly, we continue to have a good showing of people attending the monthly chapter meetings with excellent educational activities. We even have looked at and tried other venues to determine the quality and potential success of each location. While our annual Golf Tournament was not as successful as we would have liked it to be, we made up the finances through our sponsorship of a successful workshop in conjunction with the semiannual VCORN meeting. The workshop provided information about the use of simulation in the education environment and some participants even got to experience it. Another segment of the workshop was about nursing forensics. The stories were very intriguing and the audience requested another opportunity to hear the speaker again. Look for this topic in the fall. The next Golf Tournament is well under way in planning. The contract has been signed with the golf course and monthly meetings are taking place to insure progress is being made. The date for this year is October 9, 2012, at The Crossings Golf Club. Think about how you can help make this event successful through securing gifts, sponsorships and participation. Mark your calendar now! Chapter delegates at the 59 th AORN Congress in New Orleans had great experiences. There were excellent education opportunities, AORN business conducted, physical fitness opportunities (Foundation 5K run/walk and walking to the convention center), and networking. Some chose to spend extra time in New Orleans to take in tourist activities. Consider serving as a delegate next year in San Diego. Our chapter was able to meet all of its budgeted activities that support AORN scholarships. In October, 2011, we presented the first annual Caspari Nursing Scholarship to a VCU School of Nursing student. While at Congress, our chapter was able to present checks to support the Owens & Minor AORN Richmond Chapter Scholarship so that a nurse will have the opportunity to further his or her nursing education. If you make donations to the AORN Foundation, consider requesting that it be applied toward the endowment of this scholarship so that in the future it can help more nurses seeking higher education. The Chapter s elections are completed and a new group of committed volunteers are about to step forward. I look forward to supporting each one as needed through committee involvement. I am confident the new Board will continue the good work our chapter is known for. I encourage all members to think about how you might be involved in the AORN Richmond Area Chapter. I thank you for allowing me to serve as your Chapter President during the past year. As we continue to do our part of influencing safe perioperative practice, make sure to have a safe and happy summer. Debbie Martin 1 President-Elect Bonnie Garretson RN Vice President Lisa A. Research Committee Update The Research Committee has presented the research project: "The potential adverse effects of fragrant personal products on operating room personnel" to the Bon Secours St Mary's Applied Research Committee and the Internal Research Board. The project was approved and the committee would like participants from our local AORN chapter. The study will be an anonymous Survey Monkey link that will be sent out via email to AORN members. The survey consists of ten questions. The goal is to have 150 participants between SMH MOR, Endo, ASU, and AORN. The committee hopes to publish the data for evidence-based practice purposes. If you have any questions please contact a committee member for more information: Carla Beattie, Rebekah Welch, or Janet Shortt.
