2 nd Annual Nursing Research & Evidence-Based Practice Symposium Register by Oct. 22 for best rate! Promoting Nursing s Future: Building Bridges from Classrooms to Clinical Settings Friday & Saturday, November 5 & 6, 2010 Burlington, Vermont NursingResearch Evidence-Based Practice Quality Improvement Projects Expanded to 2 days in 2010, the Symposium provides a forum for nurses (clinicians, students, educators, administrators, and researchers) - regardless of experience in conducting nursing research - to learn more about the evolving realm of nursing knowledge. Hosted by Fletcher Allen and building on the success of its first year, the Symposium will showcase and highlight projects covering: Nursing Research, Evidence-Based Practice, and Quality Improvement. Join us! FREE Poster Session & Reception Friday, November 5 5:00-6:30pm

Welcome The 2 nd Annual Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Symposium is the continuation of a collaboration of several people s interest in providing a forum for nurses to learn more about the evolving realm of nursing knowledge. Historically, secular nursing knowledge began with Florence Nightingale s collection and analysis of scientific data to identify the best treatment modalities for patients in addition to her emphasis on the unique role of the nurse. Currently, nursing knowledge can be generated through a variety of scientific methods. Nursing Research utilizes quantitative and/or qualitative methods to test hypotheses, describe nursing phenomenon, and identify new nursing modalities. Evidence- Based Practice projects investigate current nursing actions and customs to validate their effectiveness. Quality Improvement projects are typically institutional processes that examine the current state of practice (for example, fall prevention) and identify barriers and facilitators to achieving stated quality goals. On behalf of the Planning Committee, I invite you to join us for the upcoming 2 nd Annual Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Research Symposium. The Symposium will, once again, provide participants opportunity to reflect on the contributions of our nurse colleagues who have passed away. There will be a slide presentation to honor those nurses who are no longer with us. Please consider submitting a picture and a statement about a nurse you would like to honor when you register for the event. (Click here to view last year s slide show) The registration form will provide details on how to submit. Please join us Friday and Saturday, November 5 th and 6 th for this wonderful opportunity to celebrate, collaborate, and honor the profession of nursing and our contributions. Ann Laramee, APRN, MS Symposium Chair Keynote & Capstone Address, Lauren Goodloe, PhD, RN, NEA-BC Dr. Lauren Goodloe graduated from St. Luke s Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond, Virginia with a diploma in Nursing in 1981 and, two years later, obtained her BS in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing. In 2000 Dr. Goodloe received a PhD in Nursing from VCU in Nursing Administration. Dr. Goodloe has 30 years of nursing experience as a clinician, manager, administrator and educator. She began her career as a staff nurse at St. Luke s Hospital in Richmond, VA where she worked for 6 years as a staff nurse in Medicine & Oncology. She then moved to Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in 1987 where she worked as an Assistant Head Nurse on the Hematology/Oncology unit for 2 years. She then moved to the Department of Education & Professional Development where she held positions as nurse educator, nurse manager and director. Dr. Goodloe is currently the Nursing Director for the departments of Medicine, Geriatrics and Endoscopy Services. Dr. Goodloe also holds the position of Assistant Dean for Clinical Operations and Associate Professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in management and leadership, professional issues and health systems. Areas of expertise include: Leadership Education, Clinical Ladders and Professional Advancement Programs, Creating Education/Service Partnerships, and Clinical Leadership. Her research is focused on work environment characteristics and the impact on either staff or patient outcomes. Dr. Goodloe has specifically conducted research on clinical ladders and has several related publications. Keynote: NURSING EDUCATION & NURSING SERVICE: BEST PARTNERS FOR BEST PRACTICE Friday, November 5, 1:00-2:00pm The keynote address will focus on Nursing Education - Service Partnerships and their positive impact on education, service, and research.
