Warfare Innovation Continuum Warfighting in the Contested Littorals Will emerging technologies (unmanned systems, advanced computing power, automation, advanced sensor capabilities, laser weapons etc.) allow us to fight effectively in the complex and an electromagnetically contested littoral environment against sea denial forces? Warfare Innovation Continuum proposes a series of independent, but coordinated NPS cross-campus educational and research activities to provide insight into the opportunities for warfighting in the contested littorals: Swarm ISR to support tactically offensive operations Expeditionary mining and marine raid concepts Alternative methods of ship to ship communications in a Network Optional Warfare concept Defensive laser weapons 10

Warfare Innovation Continuum Warfighting in the Contested Littorals Thesis opportunities Systems Engineering and/or Operations Analysis: Explore unmanned air offensive and defensive weapon systems employment against adversary unmanned systems Operations Analysis: Tactical development for employment of a SEA VEX air wing in a coordinated strike operation Operations Analysis: Tactical development for manned/unmanned air system employment in land and sea strikes Systems Engineering: Systems architecture for deploying, maintaining, and employing broad area maritime surveillance systems base on distributed designs Systems Engineering and/or Undersea Warfare: Using undersea systems (i.e. SSGN) as a covert launch platform for expeditionary operations or unmanned systems 12

Warfare Innovation Continuum Warfighting in the Contested Littorals Thesis opportuni*es Information Dominance (SSE/SSO/ECE/IS): Employment of unmanned systems to support broad maritime surveillance in contested environments. Systems Engineering: Offensive UAVs Swarm flight operations Meteorology: Environmental effects on sensors carried by unmanned surface and air platforms Acquisition and/or MBA: Cost benefit analyses of distributed maritime surveillance system with legacy MBA: What are the manning implications of concepts generated by distributing surveillance platforms, smaller surface combatants, or supporting company sized raids? 13
