We hope that this newsletter will serve as a friendly reminder for our events, training, and meetings as well as update you on ongoing changes at the HRCJTA. Happy Birthday Bill! On February 20th, we celebrated Bill Edmondson s birthday! He turned twenty-six again, while we shared stories of the infamous Bill! We are eternally grateful for all that he has given to us as individuals, and as organizations. He has helped us to achieve our mission statement every step along the way. Noteworthy Norfolk Airport Police Department Satellite: The Norfolk Airport Police Department has been approved as a satellite of the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy. The Norfolk Airport P.D. satellite coordinator is Captain Shelia Ward. If you have any questions about satellite training provided at this satellite, Captain Ward can be contacted at (757) 857-3344 or sward@norfolkairport.com. Articulation Agreements: HRCJTA has entered into an articulation agreement with Averett University. The agreement awards college credit for graduates of the Basic Law Enforcement Program (28 credits) and the Basic Combined Jailor Program (5 credits). An articulation agreement between HRCJTA and Saint Leo University has been in place since May of 2012 and this agreement awards 15 college credits to graduates of both Basic Law Enforcement and Combined Jailor Programs. HRCJTA is presently in negotiations with other institutions of higher learning to establish similar agreements. When any new agreements are ratified, that information will be passed on so our graduates can take advantage of these agreements. Leadership Institute: We at the Academy are excited to be conducting the tenth Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute for 2014 will once again be hosted at Christopher Newport University. The program is divided into two sessions. The first session starts Monday, May 22, 2014 and runs through May 25th. The students will return for the second session August 4th and graduate on Thursday August 7th, 2014. We continually try to improve the program, this year a leadership forum will be included in the curriculum for the first time. Percy has taken the place of Frank Natal who has retired. We will miss Frank, but we are very glad to have Percy working with and molding our recruits.
